Shotgun for Pheasant and/or ducks

I need advise on a cheap gun for pheasant and/or ducks. I have a Browning A-5 sweet sixteen that was a gift that I hunt quail and pheasant with now. It has trouble with high-brass shells.

I am looking at trading my Winchester 94 rifle or selling it and getting a 12 guage. I figure as little as I hunt, a Remington 870 or such would be fine. Any advice on a good reliable cheap gun that could shoot steel shot if need be?

I have the same gun, take it to a gun smith he will have it shooting high base easily!!
It will shoot steele no problem. Are you hunting pheasant and quail in a wet land area?? Is that why you need to shoot steele??

Cheap and tough?? Mossburg. Buy one at a pawn shop for a really good deal.

Shoot the 870 express model, I have a 12 gauge and love it. I've shot expensive guns before and keep coming back to this model. I live in some great country for both waterfoul and upland game, and this gun kills them all haha. It is just a good accurate bear-bones gun, you'll like it!

you want a good cheap 12g go with an 870, bulletproof as a shotgun can get! remington 1100's are good guns also!

Never seen a benelli that was any good!

My wife bought me a Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag a fews years ago

I am writing this to see what kind of warranty mossberg offers on your guns, this 835 has been a lemon since the day I unwrapped it

I was thinking about getting a new gun, but thought I'd see if I could possibly have you all fix this gun for me.

Ever since I've tried to shoot it the shells would stick in the barrel and fail to eject properly, the extractor is working fine and even pulls the rim back on the shell if I pull the foregrip back hard enough, but the shell will not come out of the chamber.

The shell for some reason just glues itself in the chamber once fired and it doesn't even matter what kind of shell it is, it does it with el cheapo 2 3/4 inch trap loads (by the brick at walmart) or it does it on top of the line turkey and geese loads. I have to jam and arrow or rod down the barrel to punch the shell out.

I thought the chamber might have been cracked but I can't see one.

I really hate this gun.

I suppose if it ejected and shot properly I'd like it though, its a nice gun otherwise.

the serial # is UM 23XXXXXXXXX

the barrel is 12 GA 28IN. "accu-mag" with the screw in chokes

Like I said this thing sucked since the day I brought it home, I was going to buy a new barrel but I refuse to, because this one should have worked and it does not....and it sure isn't my fault.

anyways, will you all make this gun right and restore my faith/trust in Mossberg?

That is a bummer. You got a lemon.
Take it to a local guy!! he'll fix it for cheaper than the examination fee.

if you want an auto, go to wal-mart and buy a charles dailey. under $400 if it ever breaks they will fix it at no cost.
pump-buy a used 870.

Buy the 870 express mag. This gun is the bomb. Never freezes never jams. and if you go with the mag you can shoot up to 3 1/2" shells. Voted best all around shot gun year after year by outdoor life and field&stream

weekday warrior, i have a friend who is an avid waterfowler and the daily is the only 12 he shoots, very cheap and reliable. the only thing that kind of sucks is you have to hold the button in on the side to load it.

I've killed lots of birds with a New England Firearms(H and R) that set my dad back 70 bucks. Single shot but you can get extra barrels and calibers for one gun!

HAve a mossberg 500 that I beat on and it works great. 870 is hands down in my eyes the best all around gun no matter what. 300 new.

also if it was me I wouldn't pend any extra so I could shoot 3.5". All it does is give you a few more pellets....never had a bird not die because I was using 3 or even 2 3/4".

Huge plus for ducks knowing the only reason you aren't getting the 2nd shot is because you short stroked it.

Is that A-5 a 16 gauge?
A-5's are nice guns, I would do like justadude suggested, bring it in so you can you that for pheasants. If you can get 3" mags for it then that'll work just fine for ducks.

Yep, it's a Belgium made sweet 16, 1965 I think. Steel shot would ruin the chamber because of the soft barrell. Also it is only chambered for 2 9/16" shells, so I have trouble with Winchester and Federal ammunition. I was looking for a cheap pump or auto for fowl weather and keeping the 16 for more of a collector thing. I don't really want to modify it if I can avoid it.

FYI, I also have a single shot Winchester 16, and my Dad has a double barrell LC Smith 16 circa 1936 that he has said would be mine someday, not too soon I hope.

I'm considering trading my Model 94 Winchester .30-.30 (It's not pre-64, it's 1975 I think) for either a Super Nova, Wingmaster, or 1100. Until then, I'll keep using the Browning for pheasant.
