ridin out back door

I live right outside Avon... June Creek trail comes to my front door... The few times I have trailered in the last few years has been buying/selling sleds. It's too much of a hassle to load and ride somewhere else...

I ride out my driveway down the street and up in the mtns behind my house and I'm in Minturn. I think we used our trailer less than 10 times last season, we just would explore all the areas behind our house.

Guys ride sleds down the street everyday, we're pretty respectful as far as not before 7-730am then not after about 9pm. The town cops are pretty chill about it as long as riders aren't being dumbasses.

Pretty sweet!

can you access vail pass from minturn? is it legal?

i live on gore pass outside of kremmling. 3 mile road ride to the trails. usually ride from the house. once i hit the trails rabbit ears is around 20 miles (guessing) 17 miles from house to some park (cant remember the name at this particular moment)

Trout Lake

I lived at Trout lake for a winter. Thats just outside of Telluride. We never used trailers, would ride from the door all the time. It does help when the elevation their is 10k ft. Wish I could ride from the door now. Its over 2 hrs.

Well, you could ride along the railroad tracks all the way to redcliff (if you want to try it) then into Redcliff, and into the backside of Vail pass. You'd need a gas can and technically the railroad is private property, I've never done it, my dad used to do it about 15+yrs ago.

Minturn as some nice powder fields and it's close. I love riding there during the week cause you won't see another track up there. It's super close to town if anything happens and it's just a bunch of fields no avy danger...
There isn't any steep hills to climb, just a bunch of fields with pretty good powder.

I'll get out and explore new areas cause I joined the club around here, but that'll still be my favorite spot.

I live near Hahns Peak Village/SLO and I ride from the house. From Clark North, you are allowed to ride on County Road 129 (Elk River Road). The County Commisioners held a public meeting a few weeks ago to discuss if anything should change concerning the 1987 law allowing sleds on the road. There was only four people that spoke that wanted to shut us down (one was the Sheriff). The majority spoke in favor of the law (including the County Emergency Manager, Fire Dept EMT, etc.) with all stating there's no current problems ...never have been. When I spoke, I told the commisioners, if someone breaks the law (i.e. speeding), then punish the guilty, not the masses. I also said that if they prohibited sleds on the roads, it would increase trespassing. My thoughts where echoed by many, including the Commisioners, and they agreed to keep things the way they are.

how is the kremmling/granby area as far as the riding? what places are close?

My parents live between Granby and Grand Lake so I usually do most of my riding in that area. There are a ton of places right outside of both Granby and Kremmling, but those are secrets and the guys I ride with might kill me if I told you :) Up Highway 125 there's a place called Cabin Creek that doesn't get a lot of traffic and has some sweet riding. As far as "riding from your front door" pretty much the town of Grand Lake is your best bet. I'd recommend going mid season to make sure there's enough snow to ride from town to the big trail system. Last season was epic as far as snow goes, so that wasn't an issue.

Trout Lake is incredible. Did you know Casey Smith??? He has been up there forever.

Trail system maps for MOST areas are on www.sledcity.com Click on the area and it will take you to the Club web site that grooms the trails. You can also call the club and ask them to send you a map.

UPDATE ON RABBIT EARS VILLAGE

Spoke with a realtor in the area who did some checking around on sled access. Rabbit Ears Village is surrounded by a privately owned ranch. In the past they would let riders use the property to access Rabbit Ears.. They DO NOT allow it anymore.

So far as the Steamboat area goes...out north, Clark etc. is a much better option than Rabbit Ears Village. There is more infrastructure, snow, terrain, no pass to drive to get to tha 'boat, etc.

As for "barely rideable snowpack from Jan-Apr" that makes me laugh. Someone who lives up there could chime in, but it looked like a healthy 6-8' base by march in the valleys while almost 700" fell up high in the Zirkles last year.

Here's my place. You actually have to ride into in the winter ,but I've got a sled to pull. Location well I may have to keep that on the down low. hehe Spicer Peak about 30min to RE!
