Replacing water pump shaft seal?

Can you replace the water pump shaft seal with the motor in the sled (06 M7)?
I just finished up a 700 rebuild. The problem is the pump shaft rust causing the seal to fail, then you need to split the case to replace shaft. You will also need the seal install tools.May just want to pull the engine yourself and take it to a cat dealer and have them replace the seals. You will have to take it out to do the job.

Water pump seal leak

So looking at this picture at the bottom you can see a hole that has been blowing oily crap. Is this an indication of a water pump seal leak? On the crank case side? Or is this normal?

There is a oil seal and a waterpump seal on that shaft it looks to me that the oil seal is leaking a bit. You can replace these without splitting the case, you must remove the oil pump and take the shaft out that side. Then you can access the waterpump seal and the oil seal. It will take some special tools and it can be done but unfortunately I believe the engine has to be removed for the job.

Hope this helps if there is anything else I can help you with let me know

The oil pump is on the front of the motor correct? This weep is on the back side by the water pump. Again not coolant, but oil.

Thanks again.

If you look at part number 9 on this diagram it shows an oil seal right behind the water pump. This seal is to keep the gas/oil mixture from entering the waterpump area. If this seal starts to leak you will see oil leakage from that weep hole.

So, Pull the motor and with the right tools this can be replace without splitting the case?

Also, a bit of leak probably isn't a big deal other then the mess. Correct.

Or could you pull air into the bottom of the case causing a lean condition?

I don't know if you will see enough air to get past this seal to create a lean condition or not. Yes this can be replaced without splitting the case, once you remove the oil pump and the input shaft retainer you must remove the water pump cover and impeller. Then the shaft can be removed out the oil pump side of the case. Then using the special driver you can drive out the mechanical seal from the oil pump side of the case. After that you can access the oil seal located behind the mechanical seal. If you plan on doing this you will have to replace your mechanical seal as well, when you replace the mechanical seal you must be very careful with the ceramic seal to make sure you do not touch it with your fingers as the oil in your skin will etch the ceramic and cause it to leak. I believe there is a tissue sent with the seal to use when installing the ceramic seal so you do not touch it.There is a special driver made by A.C. to install the mechanical seal so it seats correctly on the case. Also there is a plastic bullet that goes on the end of the oil/water pump shaft during reassembly so the end of the shaft can not cut the lip of the seal when you are sliding it through.

Let me know if this helps
