Recommend me an elk cartridge

So you carry two guns elk hunting? The 338 for 260 to 320 yards. If they are farther you unsling the 300 wsm and let 'em have it? What happens if you see an elk at 200 yards? Do you pack a pistol for them? A knife for those closer? Sorry, just hackin' on you!:D

Yeah, I knew what you meant - it was in good humor, that's what the smiley face means Einstein! (you could at least spell that right) By the way, I have killed 27 bull elk in every imaginable situation, out to 400 yards with a .270 using 130 grain bullets.

For the thick, looking at shots not over 100 yds, I shoot a Thompson Center 16" carbine in 45-70 gov. For factory loads, just shoot Hornady 325 FTX's, am also looking into reloading some Barnes TSX's. Looking for a small scope, something like a 1-4x or maybe even a aimpoint red dot.

For longer shots, I'll steal my dads old Remington 700 BDL custom shop in 8mm remington mag. Seriously, I think one of the MOST underrated calibers, it's too bad it's going into extingtion, read it's biography in any reloading book, it will be missed.:(

But, for next year, I'm looking for a 700 action to re-barrel, more of a crime of opportunity though, long/short action would determine my caliber selection. Always been fond of the good old .243, but may screw around with a 6mm BR. Looking for a 20ish" barrel compact sniper type rifle, more for shooting a ways at gophers, speed goats, 'yotes, but I've never really been afraid to drop an elk with a 6mm either!:) We'll see though, college is draining the fun-fund.

I got just a 140gr 7mm Nosler balistic tip being shoved out the barrel with a 8mm mag casing load. Don't need to hit em twice ever.

Hey arctic boy, why didnt you just say you had an 7 mm STW? I load mine with 82.5 grns of 7828 and get 3550 fps. Lil too fast for al elk unless its out at 600 yds...........

I agree with the Nosler ballastic tip....it does the job...plain and simple! :beer;

.

Really? I was having problems keeping the Nosler ballistic tips together, out of my .243 the copper jacket would peel off, so I went to Barnes....must have just been my load was too hot or bad luck.:(

Ballistics were designed for thinskinned game. An elk has a thick hide. Anything will do the trick with good shot placement, but have 1 fawk up and youll blame it on the wrong ammunition.
