Recommend me an elk cartridge

What do you like for elk hunting in 30-06. I don't get to do much big game hunting with a rifle since whitetail is slug only here in S. MN. I've got an opportunity to finally go elk hunting in Colorado with my uncle, and am taking it. So what do you guys like.

Thanks

Tom

I just noticed why is my post count only at 10? Did everything get reset when they switched to the new forum?

we shoot 165-180 gn winchester fail safe and they are a great elk cart.we shoot 270 short mag---270 win. and 30.06--all work great

I would try a couple of top loads such as the fail safes, nozzlers, barnes and such and see what the rifle likes...not all rifles shoot all bullets good..try several and see what shoots the best thru your rifle.......

Love the Winchester loads as well, CXP3's for my .300WM, 180g.

personally i think that everyone goes way to big for elk cartiges. i shoot a 30-06 and think it is almost to big. i would rather had a 270, or even a 25-06 or 25wsm. it also depends on how close you can get if your going to shoot a mile and a half then a 300 ultra mag will bee line it. but i think go as small as you can and don't waste meat. i have a friend out here that hunts elk with a 22-250. but that is because he is comfortable with his ability to hit an elk in the head at most distances. but really its just a personal oppinion so do wat you feel comfortable with.

ps. i can just be full of **** and this is wat i think. :D

well, if you are already sighted in for the round you use for dear, you might want to stick with that, if you don't mind switching rounds and resighting in then as far as i am concerned any round between 150-180 gr would work at close shots at a range of 100- 300 yrds. i see no reason to pay big bucks for a rounds like the fusions when a run of the mill federal power shock or a remington core lock will work. you are only looking at maybe 75 FPS diff and at those ranges it don't matter. they are all designed to expand well and cause a bunch or damage.

Shoot the caliber you are comfortable with i have both a 7mmstw and a 30-378 weatherby. I love the way my stw shoots but it is a sandaro so its quite heavy. I have used my 30-378 the last 2 years And both elk have fell over in my scope and nun had wasted meat!! I shoot 180 bt t 3500fps And this gun is a tack driver....

338 federal with federal 180 barnes bullets [ standard federal ammo] for ranges out to 260 yards 320 pushing it, tika gun excellent accuracy out of the box, for over 300 yds. i use 300 wsm also federal premium ammo barnes 180s, savage is a good choice for that caliber. im good out to 450 yds. with that gun whatever you choose is good as long as your comfortable with it and can shoot it accuratly. elk are fast

I used Remington core lokt pointed soft points 180 grain for a long time.

Been trying others lately too...but I still like the old stand by.

300 WM, 300 WSM, 338 WM

I have a 300 WM and it has dropped many elk dead on the spot....I guess some of that is shooter skill too...hehe :D....I love my Ruger M77 300 WM....very flat shooting and it has one nasty punch!

.

i have a 300 ultra mag tucked in my safe for when i get to go elk hunting. i agree 30.06 is a great round. it's what i shoot for deer. 165 grain rem corelokt psp. i took a grouse tonight with it

30-06 is a great gun. I use 165grain bullets. I Always recomend noslers. I personally like almost any 30caliber. For elk I use a 300 ultra with 200grain accubonds. But i shoot out there aways. If you want a new gun go with a 300win mag. Great all around gun with more power than your 30-06. This is just my 2cents.

I prefer my Remington .338 ultra mag. I disabled these 2 felons within an hr of each other. Using a 225 grn nosler partition. Single shots to both. 6x7 290 ish elk, and 8'4" Grizz. September 05'

If the 30-06 is your gun and your comfy with it stick to it, the 150 to 165 grain works real well. Still has some punch at 400 yrd. Thats great gobbs of gun for elk, But if you are going to buy a new gun then woooow we could go on for pages, My fav. is a 7mm Mag Mobel m77 of course, Have a Browning 300 wsm, 270 Browning auto, 300 wm Browning auto, 270 win, 223 Ruger, m77 270, and a few others. They all have there place depending on what I need.

So you carry two guns elk hunting? The 338 for 260 to 320 yards. If they are farther you unsling the 300 wsm and let 'em have it? What happens if you see an elk at 200 yards? Do you pack a pistol for them? A knife for those closer? Sorry, just hackin' on you!:D
