Rabbit Ears???

Went up on Saturday 3-28 snow was outstanding. My questions is... all the parking lots around Muddy Creek were full. We parked down Hwy 40 about 1/4 mile from Muddy Creek. Is there anyway to get to Muddy Creek without driving along the edge of the Hwy?

Nope. Don't get me started on the parking issue on Rabbit Ears.:mad:

I can see it now ... we push to get a new or bigger parking lot, and they say "Well we can just ban snowmobiling entirley now, then build a bigger parking lot anyways so only skiiers can use it"

no more posting when re/buff get snow! Let the sheep go somewhere else, like vail pass, irwin or wolf creek!

You guys got way more snow than W/C did, If they had, Kurtis wouldn't be in the hospital.

The whole time we kept saying we should have gone to the ears! Best snow in the state this weekend may have had something to do with the crowds!

when you see almost 20,000 views of the ears main post you get the idea....this site is clearly a double edged sword. do you think there are fishing forums that have threads about "my hottest honey hole"?

Not true. By end of the day it was like riding on concrete. The jumps I hit early on were decent landings, but the afternoon ones hurt.

I have been keeping track of the depth on Buff using Snotel and the 36"+ inches we got last week settled more than a foot in one day. It's snowing now but not much.

I think the Mayor should step down.

I think all of the RE Newbs are doing that. Everytime I get up there he is just getting pushed closer and closer to the highway. He was camped in a different spot this weekend, had to hurt a little.

The more people that ride the more visibility the more power we have as a group.

I think Paul is a great ambassador to the sport. It will just give him an excuse to start showing up Thursday night to make sure his spot is not poached! ;)

But they should go to all of the different spots within this great state, not all infest RE/Buff. It's not the only spot in Colorado to ride, just the closest for me.

Took me over an hour to get that far on Thursday night and I was the first one in the lot. I've never had that much trouble getting in. Being near the toilet has it's advantages though. That's where all the honey's hang out;) No, my fewlings weren't hurt, but my broadband signal sucks down on that end of the lot! My buddy showed up soon after and then a 6 place full of Monanan's (nothing to do with SW as I recall). CDOT could have easily had that lot cleaned up by Thursday, since most of the snow fell on Monday and Wed. Instead they show up Fri. morn and spend an hour clearing the driveway and some of the back half of the lot. The little space that was available filled up quick and there was half the lot that still had 3' of snow on it. Rather than pick around our 3 rigs they chose to just leave it a mess. They showed up Saturday with a monster grader when the lot was packed. Then again Sunday when it was still half full. That lot could have fit a bunch more rigs if they would have showed up mid-week. I guess maybe CDOT had other priorities mid week, but they used to be better about clearing the lot right after big snows.

I've been riding RE regularly since 2004, so I'm no old-timer, but it's always busy on sunny days after big dumps in March. I don't doubt that thread has steered some people up there, but most of the people in MC lot were locals that are always there on big days. The parking is very limited on our end of the pass, so your never going to feel crowded when riding, but you do have to get there before 9 to stand a chance of parking a bigger rig. If your coming alone and you know it's going to be busy, you can always throw your sled in your pickup bed and not have any trouble finding a spot. Nothing wrong with having a big rig, but when 2 people step out of 80' worth of rig, that's where all the parking is going:rolleyes:

RE is no secret, so people are going to show up in droves on good days, regardless what anybody posts. The parking is still going to fill up, just maybe not as quick. As for secret spots, the only way to keep them secret is to leave no tracks, but that wouldn't be much fun;). And, if your secret spot is more than a 1000 acres, it ain't really a secret spot, and it's not your personal property either. Get there early or ride during the week if you want it all to yourself. Having lots of "secret" spots helps too. Explore the whole area for a few years and pretty soon you'll know where to find powder and soft snow through April. I found some un-touched pow stashes on Sun, but it took some work to get to it. All snow conditions are not equal there, some areas are warmer/sunnier and set up fast at the lower elevations. Put on a 1000' elevation and conditions are better for longer.

Personally, I'm happy with the parking situation and it seems to be adequate 99% of the time. I'd hate to see them put in a huge lot, but maybe that's what's needed:confused: More lots isn't going to help if they don't remove the snow from them though.

MD800, not sure exactly where you were, but you can boondock out of any of the lots in any direction you think you can go. Running along the highway may be the easiest way though.

The internet in general: noaa, weather channel, etc. along with weather on TV news channels doesn't always help to steer people away either. I had a few people from the midwest calling me and asking if I was going to hit the pow, and they were debating on making a spontaneous trip. They have never been on Snowest. With the snow drought we had, everyone was waiting for the pow. I stayed away because I enjoy working around the house more than riding fresh powder in March.

You hit the nail right on the head! Perfect. You can't hate people for wanting to ride. If yiou don't want to deal with it go during the week or get up there at the crack of dawn.

On another note, is it CDOT's responsibility for to plow those lots? Do they get compensated by CSA or State Parks through our registration?

Not really sure how the compensation works, but I heard they have been having some friction with the Forest service over clearing the lots and that has led to the problems we're seeing this year. I appreciate them doing it, without them we wouldn't be riding there at all, but it seems we're a lower priority than some of the other lots (skier lots).
