800 Dragon runs like crap

Ditto what aebsledder said on xmas day! I posted my heartaches about my 09 800 Dragon on under the title- More on cfi clutching stuff. Runs like **it. Just would like it to Run instead of working on it or taking it to dealer every week!

aksnowrider: what do you suggest for my assault -09?
drive spring: team 165-344
slp mtx 71
stock secondary
gearing 19/41
slp single pipe
have tried 2 gram in middle and 2gram in tip (thats what slp recommend)
but i am not so impressed. reving 8200 sometimes. its feeling tired in the midrange.
what do you think about 3 gram middle and nothing in the tip?
I am riding at sealevel.

if it was me I would add a couple delrins to the secondary to smooth it out and add helix...62/42/.46 or 64/44/.45 something along those lines..the bigger initial angle will really liven up the midrange, and the delrins should make the top more consistent..you will probable have to pull rivit weight to get max rpm..maybe not with the shorter track...

Clutching & stumble

09 D8 163,19/42,SLP single. Started with 2 gr belly 0 tip,68 mtx, blue/pink spring, stock secondary with 3 Delrin washers, at 6000 ft run 8000 rpm and 46 mph on the hill, then went with no rivets would run 8100 rpm on some pulls and 47 mph, but at lower elevations it was easy to run 8300 +
I did not like the way it ran below 4000 ft, some of the old mid range stumble cam back and made it hard to ride. Next I put 1gr tip, 2gr belly and down low it run great, pulled real hard would hit 8200 rpm. At 6500 to 8000 ft pulled 8050 rpm and 45 to 50 mph depending on the run. I like this set up better for around hear, as we start out around 1500 ft and ride for awhile be for getting to 5000 ft and up, I would like to see to 8200 rpm just not sure where to go from hear.

Ak would changing the helix to a 60/40/.36 help ?

Has any one had the the mid range stumble show up ? I have been ridding with other dragons with the 2010 up dates, 2- 08 & 1- 09, and everything has been fine until around 150 to 250 miles than a low elevation stumble started in the mid range from about 5000 to 6200 rpms below 3000ft.
I thought I had caused mine to do it when I went to light on my weights,
when I added some back it did seem to make it better. I have been trying to get my rpms up at altitude, but an average of 8000 rpm is all I can get, and that is what the stock sleds my friends have are getting, and close to the same track speed, its like the 2010 map is keeping them from doing more than 8000 to 8100 rpm.I am going to try 3g in the belly 0 tip this next week end just to see if the same total weight but lighter tip makes a difference,
It seems like no matter what I try I can not get the rpms much above 8050
above 5000ft.

Endo, polaris released a new map yesterday..see if you cant get yours flashed before the weekend and see if it doesnt help out....only place it shows is in digital wrench download page as a new update...

Has anyone done any clutching to a stock motor without the slp pipe? i have a stock 09 assault, just curious if i would be able to pull the 62-44 helix that the guys with the pipe are running, i ride 2000' at home and 6000-8000 in the hills. any ideas on weights would be great to i really want to try a set of mtx's. sounds like the guys with the pipe have there sleds rockin and i would like to do the same with out the pipe.

Now What?

So, I rode my sled yesterday with the latest flash. Had a pretty good testing ground. (Was the airport runway at west yellowstone) which is about 6700 feet in elevation. I am running SLP blue pink primary, stock secondary, stock helix, and 62 gram stock weights. I was able to pull 8200 rpms consistently with a max at some point of 8300. I know SLP claims 8100-8200 running rpm's for their single pipe set-up, which is what I have. Should I leave well enough alone, or try some different stuff to get to the magical 8350 that some well clutched set-ups are able to achieve. Maybe a different helix? 60-40-.36? Green Pink primary? When Brad rebuilt my primary he tried to use the 68 gram MTX weights, but he said the sled was creeping and he would have to re-shim the spider for clearances. Is it worth it to use the MTX? Seems like when I used them before the sled was less snappy out of the hole, but pulled a little bit harder at full throttle. AK? I know you have some ideas. Gracias.

AEB...tell ya what....for right now..how about lets ride it..and see how it is..give it a couple rides and then we will play with it...use your memories and get some acurate ideas of what its pulling both mph and rpms...we will get it all tuned in for ya...wish the dealer would have shimmed it since he had it apart anyway to do the rollers....the heal heavy weights really help..as does a steeper helix...hang in there....:beer;:beer;(glad it is running better....)

Yeah, that wasn't really his fault, I forgot to bring my MTX weights with me and by the time I sent my weights to him he had already shimmed to the stock ones. My thought were the same as yours. I will ride it in some more real world conditions i.e. deeper snow and see how it performs. I feel like I am semi-confident in how it is running now and hopefully I can only go up from here. Hopefully....Thanks again for all your input, has helped tremendously.

Ak
I got the latest map done on Friday but had to stay home for the week end, will get to try it next weekend. Is any one running a almond spring? and what is the difference between it and the blue-pink spring ? I talk to some guys on the hill last week, they were running the SLP single and a 64g weight with the almond spring, said it work real good. I can not find the spring any where, is it stock or after market?

Endo, the almond spring is the same as the stock black spring the 08's came with..the blue/pink will suit you better...

On my 09 assault(STOCK) i run 68g polaris weights at home(about 2000') and change to 62g polaris weights when we go to the mountains. my question is would i be able to use MTX 68G for both elevations and just add and remove the rivits to get proper RPM? i dont really want to buy 2 sets. I know i will prob have to shim to get the proper clearence but only want to do it once. thanks

I use my D8 155 at 1300' with 3 grams in the tip and 2grams in the belly and it revs out at 8400 on hard pack. At 8500' with 1 gram in the belly none in the tip she hits 8400. No complaints with one set of weights here!

does anyone have a GOOD setup for 8-10000 feet? or even ideas... preferably not running mtx weights.

assault with 153 powerclaw
slp pipe, pcV
19/42
carls helix with stock spring and couple derlins
slp blue/pink primary....i was running some of Ron's weights at 59g, tried 10-58s and wouldnt help, actually worse

it would spike but only hold 8100 or so on a climb
i switched to the shallow angle on the helix and helped a tish bit, but not much. was gonna try a stiffer secondary spring but never had one in the trailer

Is that with a stock pipe? i will be using a 62-42 helix. what helix are you running? That would be great if i can get away with one set of weights. thanks for the info. i am also going to try a 64-44 helix at home for the lower elevation and see how that works.

SLP pipe, 62-42/46 helix, green/pink primary, and delrins in sec

how about trying steeper gears? a couple guys last year said they had great results gearing down to 19/45or46 up over 10000 ft.....otherwise I think you need to pull a little helix..maybe something along the 60/40/.40 or even 58/38/.40...just an idea..how is your belt/clutch temps?..a slightly stiffer secondary spring would bring it up some as well...am surprised RON's weights didnt help more..I know everyone has had great results from them...

What drivers are you running with the 153 powerclaw?

I am running 7T 3" pitch avids....

my secondary was pretty warm when i checked it... and i had it on the 60 setting of the helix
Rons weights did help out quite a bit, i was able to hold better rpms with the 1g heavier custom weight over a 10-58.
i kind of wanted to be able to run heavier weights to try to help my shift out as i am still almost an inch away from full shiftout.
When my sled was new Indy Dan balanced and worked over my primary.
How much bigger of a bottom gear can i squeeze in there with my stock chain?
