Primary Clutch Spring lengths - Can they be different?

Need a 158 mm spring (expanded length), dealer says the one I want to use is a 105 mm spring (expanded length). The force lbs at 74mm and 42mm when the spring is compressed is what I would like to try. Does it matter that the spring uncompressed length is different? What should matter is the force at the 2 stages of compression right? Have never come across this before. Any help appreciated.

Thank you.

You got it. the free lengths are all different for different rated springs. My spring is 32mm shorther than stock.. You need to vary the spring length and rate together to get the desired initial and final forces.

Thanks man! that's what I thought. Now for the second question - I have a an all black spring 158 mm in length. No ski doo dealer lists an an all black, there was a dot on the bottom, can't tell the colour of it though (worn off). As far as I can tell, the spring rate is 185/410 but the stock spring that came with the sled is 160/230. Would it really be possible to pull that big of a spring rate increase? Sled still revs to about 7700 rpm, looking to get a little more out of it though which is why I thought of going to a 160/320 or 160/350 or heavier pins in the primary.

the spring free length is listed as a reference, and as stated before, they all can very. is what you need to look at with the free length, is if your spring is worn out. i think the tolerance listed in the race manual is 1/4". meaning that if your spring does not measure what it should, or within the tolerance, it is worn out and should be tossed and replaced. as far as colors of springs, usually all ski-doo springs are black, with two colored dots on them at one end. the way that you read them, is to stand the spring on end, with the colors at the bottom and read from left to right. i ride an 07 X-RS and i am having the best luck with a 160/320 spring(purple/purple). i tried to run a 160/380, but it doesn't have the nuts to turn it. also, take a look and see what ramps you are running. i just went from 415, to 433 ramps, and it pulls way harder. i am now running 18 grams of pin weight, and can hold 8400 rpm all day long. hope this helps!!
