pricing of av bags and safety equipment needs to change

the way i se it you can all buy the gear NOW or wait untill a friend dies or a family member dies. if you still want to sled after somthing like that happens you can buy it then.

Most of us are probably not capable of developing and bringing a cheaper version of the ABS to market but I bet any one on here could educate themselves about avalanches and teach it to others.

I don't think $150 is too much for an avy course, but if you do, then why don't you get yourself up to speed and offer $25 courses for everybody?

Threads like this really tick me off.

Let me set the record straight. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to produce and sell these bags in the USA. If you think you can do this for less than $2,500.00 per device and make a profit, PLEASE DO IT. I can save you 12 months worth of time to get your business off the ground and running.

What I found out is Klim had already done all the leg work on this. The only reason they got involved with ABS is because there was no way to produce and sell these devices cheaper in the US. As it stands Klim does not make enough money on the sale of these bags to cover the expense of shipping them. This is mostly due to the fact that ABS has less than a 10 % mark up themselves. Klim may actually be paying to make these devices available to every snowmobiler.

So please, stop complaining and go do it. Be prepared to loose 50K to find out by the time you get through the government agencies, testing, production, and insurance it can't be done. Did you know these devices have to be discharged three different times with a new canister (can't be a refill) to test the trigger device at different stages of production. Then once the bag has passed inspection ( by an independent company) so it can be installed on the device you only have to discharge it twice more, plus the two canisters you have to provide at time of sale. The good new is your company won't have to staff people to do the testing, it's a safety device and you get to have each test done by an independent company. The companies that are approved to do this are really really cheap. In the US the testing alone runs about $1,500.00 per device.

I hope this clarifies why they are not manufactured in the US.

no i dont ride in the mountains yet but heres what i see.

the abs bag is not a new development. you have been able to buy life jackets for boating with the same technology for a while now for around 100 bucks. same concept just a smaller air pocket. so how can they charge 100 bucks and abs has to charge over a grand? there the same thing so whats so special about the abs? are you paying for the brand name or ???? maybe a company that makes the lifejackets could make something in a backpack style like the abs and sell them for 200 bucks.

just the back pack alone sells for 300 at hiking store according to mike duffy. top quality

A friend of my dad told me a long time ago when I was complaining about helmet prices, "If you have a $10 head buy a $10 helmet". Same thing applies here

They've got us by the balls if you ask me!! Just ordered AVY bag and was $1250 plus tax Canadian. But if it will give myself and momma some more comfort about surviving its still worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even the kids want me to have it. Look at these lil sh1ts I want to see them every Saturday nite when I get home..........

X 2 Momma never said a word about when I ordered my pack.

This one is $250 and is nowhere in the same ballpark as an ABS pack, so your comparison doesn't mean any thing. Just a decent pack all by itself is a $100.

You know what if you can ****ing afford to put 1100 dollars into a sled or into booze you can afford to pay 1100 dollars to save your life

I would like to refer to some of the comments that have been made previous. I myself have an abs backpack but NO, I do not go to the mountains saying it will save my life if I am in an avalanche. I just have all of the best gear so that in the case I am in an avalanche I will be put in the best possible position to be saved. So to the person previous who said his friend went out and got an ABS pack so they are safe or will survive an avalanche this is totally false. If avalanche conditions are high I stick to the meadows but the freak avalanches do occur and having the gear knowing you will be in the best possible scenario to be saved is the goal I bought the gear for.

Sounds like a few of you need to get together and become millionaires. It’s not that hard. Sounds like you can make packs you can market for around $2,500.00 and sell them for $199.00. That's a margin of $2,301.00. If you sold 434 packs your a millionaire.

I agree with Spur, stop complaining and start making packs. I think you owe it to the snowmobile community.

i was more or less referring to the concept behind it. the concept of both is to float you to the top. how hard would it be for mustang to make one? not really. they already have the concept and it wouldnt be hard to put it in a backpack.

cobbycat,

Respectfully, I disagree with the above statement.

Yes, the gear is useless without training but (BIG BUT), training isn't useless without the gear.

That training tought you that you shouldn't be out there based on the conditions and/or where you could safely travel considering the conditions.

The training you recieved was paramount in your safety that day and is the only thing that allowed you to help in the search.

The training/knowledge about avys is the key to survival in the BC!!!!!!!

I agree that my training did keep me off of that particular hill on sunday.

any and all training is good. I have not taken any classes but have done an extreme amount of reading like post on here about avys. goggle avys on the comp. you would be amazed at what comes up there is alot of free info in there you just have to look.
like other people have said its all about being prepared for what your getting into. Know the area If you can't read a map find some one to show you how. Ask questions there is never a dumb question when it come to your live or a loved one. God gave us a brain we just need to us it.

Its basic economic supply and demand as the demand gos up. the manufactures bring up supply the price goes down. when the demand goes down production goes back down and the price goes back up. give it time the prices will come down.

Why don't you start a business and sell affordable, high quality gear? As far as Avy class cost, ther are a lot of free classes taught in Montana. If you do not live here, take one when you visit, or get someone to teach where you live.

Yugo had the same concept about building cars. ;)

A big difference is that you are not floating around with VW size chunks of ice.

I don't have a ABS, and probably never will, and it's not because of the price. I instead took a GOOD course and know how to use the other equipment, my course was around $250 but worth every penny and more. Even at the avalanche course they didn't try to push ABS packs, they said your much better off getting a good beacon and probe, and know how to use them. My money is much better spent on training and gear, which includes avalanche courses regularly. ABS pack doesn't do much good if you can't deploy it.

what is a good course to take i have tooken a course and i didnt do much for me and i have a av bag im just trying to get at is there is no way that thows bags can coast that much to make and should be cheeper and every one should have one
