Poor Choice Results In More Avalanche Death

Thread Rating

I'm pretty sure OT brings up the snowmobile avy aspect of things because this is a snowmobile related forum. See the connection there?????

You use your rig to tow your sleds to the trailhead. See the connection there??????

If he had started in the day after animals death blaming him for being careless I wonder if you would feel the same way?

he did!!! exactly the day after. Some were put off. and I was until I sat down and thought about it.

We can NOT change the past, but we CAN change the future. or at least try.

It is a tough time to discuss this topic; with people's friends and riding parteners being directly involved in these horrible incidents. That said, I would also argue that it is the best time. I know I have become more aware of the dangers over the years by reading of people's (good and bad) experiences on this forum, and if that can one day help out myself or someone else, then it's all worth it.

Like it or not, OT in his blunt fashion is correct. Avalanches are getting more media coverage than ever this year. Every hole-in-the-wall radio station, let alone the dedicated avy reports, was telling people of the nearly off-the-chart avalanche danger in southern BC last weekend. My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I read about the avy deaths on here sunday night. Ignoring warnings of such magnitude and consequence is setting yourself up for disaster.

Let me make clear that I have nothing but sorrow and sympathy for the victims and their friends and family, and don't wish harm on ANY of our sledding brethern.

Unfortunately the point remains that if people do not learn from these mistakes, we will just be having the same thread next monday morn.....and that's a very sad state for our sport.

lAST TIME I CHECKED,CANADA WAS A FREE COUNTRY,BUT I DONT BELIEVE THAT THIS GIVES YOU THE RIGHT TO ENTER THE BECK COUNTRY UNPREPARED,UNEDUCATED.FOR MOST OF US ,WE WEAR A ABS BAG,WEAR A BEACON,CARRY A SHOVEL AND PROBE,BRING EXTRA GAS AND FOOD,MOST OF US HAVE TAKEN A AVY AWARENESS COURSE OR HAVE FIRST AID.WE STAY THE HELL OFF THE BIG PULLS,AND CHEW THE **** OUT OF EVERYTHING ELSE,WHEN CONDITIONS ARE high risk.OUR GROUP WAS FIRST TO ASSIST AT OWLSHEAD THAT TRAGIC SUNDAY.I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY THE NUMBER OF SLEDDERS THAT JOINED IN THE SEARCH,BUT SHOCKED BY THE NUMBER THAT HAD TO STAND BY AND WATCH,BECOUSE THEY COULDN'T ENTER THE SLIDE AREA INCASE OF ANOUTHER SLIDE.(NO BEACONS) THIS MAKES ME KINDA SAD THAT THERE SMART ENOUGH TO LOVE THIS GREAT SPORT ,BUT NOT BRIGHT ENOUGH TO SAVE THERE LIFE (OR AN FELLOW RIDER) MOST HAD NEWER SLEDS AND TOP OF THE LINE GEAR (NO BEACONS) PLEASE PEOPLE AT LEAST A BEACON,IT WAS AWEFUL PROBING FOR THIS TO YOUNG TO DIE RIDER R.I.P MATT FROM ENDERBY.................................:

My Granpa told me a long time ago, " Ray this is nature, not a zoo, not a carnival. There are no rewards or punishments in nature, only consequences". I have to agree with OT(I don't believe it either!). Bad choices can lead to bad consequences. My condolences to all the families and friends.:brokenheart::face-icon-small-sad

holy caps lock captain...

and i feel deeply for those lost, but i hope it helps sink it in and others learn, go out prepared, be smart and come back in your truck, not a bag.

i currently refuse to ride with people without beacons, shovel and probe, and if there want to horse around on steep crap, im going home, not riding for a day s better then being dead!

as far as some calling OT old and bitter, he may be, but if we all keep being stupid we wont get to be old and bitter, we may hate him for it, but hes still alive, so i think that shows us who we should listen to as far as advice.

Every snowmobile related avy......................IS A BLACK EYE TO THE BACKCOUNTRY SNOWMOBILE COMMUNITY

If you can't be a good steward of the backcountry stay home since you very well might be to dangerous and don't even know it because your blinded by the thrill and the false sense of safety gear you own.

i have to agree with OT on this one. with all the info out there right now, people must be deaf or blind not to know the risks involved with the hills. i believe that in some cases group mentality rules and otherwise clear thinking individuals do things like cutting slopes or highmarking. all the beacons and probes won't help if you and your sled are 5-6 feet down. make the right choices before this happens and we won't have to read about another death or hear about another family without their loved ones.think about people.

I was there with catmanwiens on that horrible day and i fully agree. absolutely beside myself about the guys that had to sit out because they didn't have a beacon. at last head count, 32 rescuers, 27 sitting out!!!! NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!

I wonder how many of the peeps hammering OT are new to sledding or new to snowest...

As well of the those peeps bashing OT how many of you have lost a friend to an avy....personally I have and it has affected my choices.

I have also lost a couple of friends in an Avi in different years. Both times was their fault or their ridding partners. It ***gin kills me. To think these people won't carry the proper gear is unbelievable. BTW both of my buddies died of trauma not from being burried. People call me a ***** for having electric start. We were in a huge slide a couple of years ago. No lie, the only ones that didn't get burried had electric start. I'm with OT on this one.

on the money...bad choices..sad sad sad ...were capable of many....coyote girl has a thread going on what can we do to help...thinking outside the box...man its hard to answer..check her thread out..ok later...im looking at the meadows for the next while..long while....

Not going to bash as now I understand his tactics.
And yes I have lost one and almost a 2nd one. Didnt know the ones family but was the unfortunite one that had a phone and got the call from them and had to break the news to them. Will haunt me till the day I pass.

Bottom line even though its fun and I love it, I love life more and the risks aren't worth the cost IMO. I dont have a problem now with saying no its not worth it.

Whats more important, to worry about the feelings of those who were hurt by an Avy death or to get the message out in a tough love sorta way to those of us who are still riding the hills. I got no problem with the tough avy comments people need em.
