I am hoping some of you have some experience with these.

Here is the deal, I have a PS2 right now, but it isnt working to well anymore. I think it is rather wore out. My wife bought me a Blu-ray player for Christmas. I havent opened it yet. So now the PS2 is really not working hardly at all. So I am thinking maybe we should take the new Blu-ray player back and buy and a PS3. I want to be able to play my PS2 games so if I am understanding correctly, the 60GB and the older 80GB models are the only ones backwards compatible?

Or my other option is simply go buy a PS2 and actually still be into the PS2 and new player less than the PS3 by itslelf but then not have the ability to move to PS3 games.

One of my concerns with the PS3 as a Blu-ray player is I am somewhat of a adiouphile and I want to be able to connect it with my suround sound system. I know thats easy to do but I am wondering what kind of audio programming the PS3 supports. By this I mean DTS, THX, True HD audio, ECT.

So what do you all recommend?

yeah the 80 and 60 gig are the only ones backwards compatible, 60 gig does it through hardware emulation and has about a 98% b/c and the 80 gig does it through software emulation, this was done to cut the cost down but basically makes no difference only that its b/c is about 80% I believe, but taking into account the amount of games out there for the ps2, I would almost guarantee your games would work on either, the only other difference is the 60 gig has a memory card reader for all formats, and more USB ports, again all of which were stripped to get the cost cheaper, but there has been rumblings about a 120 gig ps3 coming out.

As a blue ray player its quite impressive, the firmware can be upgraded through the wireless or ethernet port, unlike alot of the standalone payers, the ps3 blue ray was actually the best buy for blue ray players for about a year after they came out.

As for audio programming, I am not quite sure, it has an optical input, and as well as the HDMI and have heard of people running 7.1 with it, sounds great im my 5.1 home theatre.

Overall its great, one thing not to be overlooked it how it shared media with your computer, doing slideshow pictures, or home movies on the big screen TV sure beats the heck out of the old photo albums, you can also share your music and use your ps3 as a jukebox, its great stuff.

Bought the 3 last year for the bluray, works awesome. My son has had a ps2 for years,
all of his games work in it no problems. Have had to update more often for the newer games. Great all in one system.

Your best bet is to find a 60 GB or older 80GB used on craigslist as they are the ones that are backward compatible. Friend of mine just got a smoking deal on a 60GB. If you want new try to find the Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 bundle at that uses the older 80GB. I believe a easy way to distinguish a older 80GB is it has chrome trim were disk slides in,4 USB ports up front & lid up front flips up for memory card reading.

BTW I have a 60GB & love it. No issues with Blue Ray,works so good.

We have a PS2, a wii, a xbox, a xbox 360, etc. I love the PS3! The games are so cool it has features that all the other systems have and then on top of its already superior awsomeness it has a blu ray player (which is just ridiculous to watch!) I recommend buying one and returning your other stuff!
