Personal Weight loss- FOR SLEDDING SEASON!!!!!

Ralph... just start riding a bike to work... that'll take care of things!!! (are you on this side now or back on your side?)

I wish I could ride my bike to work everyday, I don't think I can get up that early.
Maybe if we all do that we can all drop 20 lbs. by winter, and possibly the left wing libs. will like us better.

bowerman61028 .

I stay away from oatmeal or granola in the morning when your metabolism is the slowest.

What is the reason for this, I might need to change my breakfast meun.

losin' it

it all comes down to motivation. short-term and long-term. short term: give a friend $1000 to hold and if you don't drop 20lbs in 2 months, he can keep it. long-term: how to keep motivated once you drop the 20lbs. and don't get caught up in "well it won't hurt just this once....."

at the end of the day, for most people with normal metabolic rates, it is 95% quality and quantity of diet to remain reasonably fit. on average, i would guess most people eat twice as much as they need in a day. most people know what's good to eat, but dietary habits are hard to change. not only have you developed these habits over a lifetime, but once you do alter these habits, your body may not be happy about it (have you ever started eating better, had a slice of pizza and it tastes 10X better than normal?)

i will give you 2 ideas to chew on:

1)get scientific. know at least how many calories you need per day to maintain your current body weight. i can give you the name of a fitness trainer in denver that will measure your caloric needs based on your current weight, body fat % measured with calipers (not the most accurate way but a good starting point), and the amount of heat you exhale over about 5 minutes. costs $75 for about 20 minutes of time but gives you a baseline. for example, i ramp up my training in july. i just got tested and right now at 185lbs and 17% body fat, i need 2700 calories a day just to lay on the couch (i do have a fairly high metabolism). to get to 170lbs at 10% body fat, without any excercise, i could eat 2300 calories a day and lose about 1.5lbs of body fat a week and hit my goals by october. you can take this even further with excercise but unless motivated to do otherwise, genetically your body wants to burn carbs, protein, and fat in that order. you need to eat enough so you don't lose lean muscle. i personally like a diet 40-30-30 (intake calories are 40% carbs, 30% protein, 30% fat)

2)the scott-bilt challenge. when you get together with your riding buddies for that summer session sled video barbeque, tell everyone to sack up and set a weight loss goal for the season. get a scale for the sandbaggers. whoever is closest to their goal at the beginning of the season gets his transportation fuel paid for by whoever is the farthest from their goal. this can be easier for the least fit guys. it's all about motivation.

Honestly, Scott's comment about learning to live with a bit of hunger is such a big difference. I used to have to cut for fights pretty often & that made a huge difference. (I don't cut for anything these days... I need my sledding ballast!!):face-icon-small-hap

I am on the Mill side till Thanksgiving. LOL. Riding my bike to work sure would do it, if I had a decent one. Ute Pass would be a good climb

PX-90....lol

If you want to look like the guys on the PX-90 commercial be prepared to not be able to sled...in that final pic they are starving and dehydrated and wouldn't be able to unload the sled let alone ride it all day.

My brother just finished a 6 month body morph competition...he is contestant number 3

He felt like he was going to die on the final day of the program...eating just a a rice cake and one cup of water on the final days. He put 20 lbs back on in a matter of weeks.

Moderation in eating and good ol fashion exercise is the only cure.
gatorade is as bad as soda if not worse....water is your friend :)

Use your time wisely and success will be your outcome...

everytime you pick up the tv remote it could be a weight instead
every post on the innerweb could have been a set of sit ups.

LOL. I hardly even post anymore. I walk at work as much as I can, instead of using the ARGO. Always carrying equipment too. I appreaciate all the advice. I just started working on the treadmill about 45 minutes each night. It is working I think, I'm sure beat after 45 minutes. I started at a weight of 224. I will let you all know how things work out. I am aiming for 190ish

YOu could do like I did, not recomended by the way. Brake you hip and loose 25lbs in 2 weeks, warning this may affect your ability to ride.

Ya, the kidney stone and stent last year (remember?) that dropped me to 195 FAST, but as soon as my ureter healed and the stent came out, the weight came back. It's the frigging back issues that did me in, plus the 18 month layoff and being Mr. Mom. I realize that it'll take time and with my work schedule, I have it.

What is a good target heart rate? And the ab exercises have to be done carefully, as alot of them do put some strain on the back. I don't wanna hurt it again. That pain was unbearable.

Couple more things to think about....

--It takes about a month of HARD work to get your metabolism raging. Which, BTW, is just a few days longer than people will hold out for and then quit.

--I was once told by the strength trainer at a gym (former wrestler himself) that no matter how much weight you actually lose you CANNOT burn more than 2 lbs of fat per week without burning muscle.

Eat 5-6 small meals a day and it will put your metabolism in turbo mode. Just keep it healthy ; chicken, rice, etc...

A really good program to follow is The fat burning furnace.

Google it. Buy it, live it and you will be one happy dude I did and I am more energetic than when I was 18. Lost 20 lbs or so. increased my weight lifting capability at least double on every exercise.

There is a lot of misinformation out there on weight loss etc, proven fact that lots of cardio kills your metabolic rate.

To make it last it truly takes a mental shift, I decided for me this was the time, lightweight parts are not getting any cheaper. They also don't do me any good. When I am passed out beside my sled.

Key is mental acceptance once you are past your first 30 days it is your norm.

Not sure if this was posted but,

do cardio early in the morning before eating. Burns more fat reserves. Also dairy will up your metabolism, as will other foods. Eat smaller meals spaced through the day and eat slowly. Talk between bites, etc then you won't stuff your face. Only eat to take the edge off, not to feeling bloated.

Get anal and figure out a rough estimate of calories consumed and what gets burned and make sure you consume less calories. Dont starve but until you expend more then you take in you won't loose.

Well, crap! I'm screwed then. Lactose intolerant and I wake up at 3:30 or 4am to get ready for work. I have to do it at night, cept on weekends.

Does anybody know how much, on average a male human burns just by functioning daily? My meals have gotten much smaller.

I do plan to do some figuring this weekend if I can find the numbers I need.

It have found when I travel sometimes and the food thats around is what I would normally reach for, I tend to just grab a snack to keep from being hungry and even in a week or so I lose a little weight, which for me is hard as I am 5' 11'' and 155 when I eat to much. I also noticed my weight at college as I dont have tons of spare food laying around and I eat only 3 meals a day, but get hungry and eat them rather early, so I eat diner by 5:30 but still stay up until 11 most nights.. the thing is by the time im hungry again after diner its time to go to bed. Its simple crap like not eating a big arse diner then going straight to bed, blah blah blah. Once you start to pay attention to what you eat, how you eat, and how much eat, it starts to be a lot easier to reach your goals.

Never heard of that one. You have a link on that?

This is why it is so important to get the facts on what works and what does not for weight loss.

This is a relatively new development in the past few years.

The truth about abs (Vince Delmonte) program pitches this, the book ultra metabolism, fat burning furnace etc.

the premise behind it is the body is smart, when it senses that a long duration of exercise is happening, the metabolic rate automatically compensates downward to conserve reserves for future needs.

So to out smart the body what you are supposed to do is interval training, high intensity cardio followed by moderate levels of cardio at appropriate cycles.

I was shocked when I read a lot of this stuff and since I have applied the techniques these programs suggest progress is night and day.

5'11'' 155..........dude grab a donut!

The best part is I eat at my moms bakery 3 meals a day.... I can live off mayonaise and not gain wait, I have the metabolism of a meth addict. BUT, I do try to pay attention and eat somewhat healthy as when I do I feel much better and have a LOT more engery throught the day. That is where my bigest gains are noticed, I dont really gain or lose weight.. maybe +/- 10lbs during a year, BUT, my eating habbits greatly reflect my engery levels and mental performance during the day. I can eat crappy food and drink lots of beer with no weight gains but I am a lot less usefull then when I eat good food and sleep well.

So where does aerobic vs anaerobic work-outs factor into this?

Ski-Dooin it,

how old are you?
I cheat, im only 20.. so I know that sorta factors into it, BUT, my family is VERY much like it as well, my mom just turned 46 and has the insane metabolism like myself, and she actually takes meds to slow it down as her thyroid was so jacked up she struggled with sleeping.
