Paying to retrieve 2 sleds from Taft, MT area

I’ll admit I was one of the first guys to say that this smells a little fishy and I hope it’s not a sick joke. From the beginning you sounded legit (but there are some asshats out there) and you still do sound legit. With all that said I do have a question. Why has your friend not been involved with the recovery up to this point?

I hope your sleds are found in good shape but more than that, I hope your dad is ok.

My friend works border patrol near Canada and won't be back in the area to help until this coming week. My dad is doing better but is told not to lift more than 15 pounds and doing physical therapy so he can't even get back in there. I could see with me not being on to keep everyone is what started the conspiracies. I'm not scheduled to disappear for the next few days so I should be able to tell everyone when they are going up and the results.

Thanks for the response, hopefully we’ll hear some good news and have some pics soon :becky:

Glad we have you back BRP! I will also admit it did sound fishy to me also...but hey if your wrong your wrong:face-icon-small-sho So hoping that you get your sleds found soon man! and I do understand the being unavalible to pop up and update..I got a friend over there also and he is very few and far between online these days! Hope to see some pics of the recovery man!

Andrew and Tyler will be headed up there this week. I guess the words out in the news now as to what's been happening over here and the reason I'm not able to be on everyday to update everyone. As soon as I get word from them, I'll make sure to get on asap and post. Especially if they send me the pics. Thanks for everyone wanting to help and being patient.

I got in contact with BRP's buddy Tyler. I'm hoping he will be able to give me a little more direction to zero in on these sleds. I HIGHLY DOUBT ANY ONE COULD HAVE GOTTEN BACK IN THERE BEFORE I DID AND TAKE THEM. its some pretty knar terrain. A guy wouldn't just stumble upon them in that area (if they are in fact in that area). I think we will e taking BRP's GPS so there will be no mistake what so ever on the coordinates. The good news is I was able to ride my sled down to the points that were given to me on my GPS Saturday when I was just up there playing around. so IF I am close,I will have a lot less hiking to doo. Im tired of hiking hahaha. The only thing that limits me going any lower is the snow conditions. There is a lot of fallen logs down there. BRP seems legit. I have spoken with him on the phone several times and has offered to pay me for my efforts thus far. If I was a scam im sure he wouldn't still be in contact with me at this point! looks like we will try again this weekend. Keep your fingers crossed we find those suckers!

Andrew and I went in there this weekend. There really are only three scenarios here, as the terrain is steep but rideable. Somebody stole them before andrew made his first attempts, the coordinates are wrong, or something funky going on. I believe the coordinates are wrong personally as this is a highly wooded area, so all the trees are limbless as far as the eye can see and are bare up to 14-15 ft so it is easy to look 100-150 yards in each direction.. We rode right down to where the coordinates were this weekend and there is no sign of anything and there hasn't been over a foot of snowfall in that area since the recovery started so they are not buried. We ride this area all the time from the bottom in and dropping in from the top, so if they are there recovery should not be an issue. Although we ride it often, not likely that many people ride this area as it is somewhat of a honey hole that we never see tracks in, but with that said a new repeater was put in there this year and some logging has taken place which makes people explore more than usual. Hope Andrew can get together with Tyler and the GPS that marked the coordinates and use that to help in aiding a speedy recovery since he has wasted two good days of riding thus far. Good luck to BRP and my buddy!

Best update I have seen so far. Pretty good insight there. I use a lot of GPS and I personally have never seen them off by more than 60-70 feet in a heavy canopy and more often about 3-10 if not right on. Un fortunately, not looking too promising and a pretty big front moving in this week wont help. At least he has them insured I think he said at one point. Just wish these chicken$hit thieves could be caught.

I agree with the GPS inaccuracy between two units. In the mountains I have had trouble with the GPS finding a marked point that wasn't done by the GPS itself. So if you gave my garmin etrex GPS the point and it happened to be on a severe shaded slop it would probably struggle to actually get to it. I fought this last year when hunting. First it said go left, then right, then down, then up, the right...... It was brutal. Hopefully if they have BRPs gps unit it will go right to the sleds.

I usually have very good results with GPS too, most times it's within 10-15 ft. But I've had it lead me way off also. One year elk hunting I came across a 5X bull that had been dead for months. I was chasing a nice bull that morning and didn't want to mess with the skull of the 5X so I marked it and thought maybe I'll come back for it later on. When I went back the GPS was off by over 600ft. It was dense cover but I made sure it had good accuracy when I marked it. When I went back in I made sure I had good accuracy but when I went to where the GPS told me to I was no where close. When I finally found the bull the GPS said I was 600+ ft from my waypoint. Good luck on the search.

I know that GPS units are not always perfect also. On two different occasions last year I hunted all morning and checked my GPS and told me I had only walked 1/4 mile. I know distance was much further than that. Both times were in dense tree cover. Hope all goes well in the search.

I could help search this weekend on the bike if you need it. I could probably cover some ground that a sledder would have to walk. Might save some time.

I have a lot of experience with GPS’s. You need to verify that both GPS units are on the same coordinates system when you give someone GPS coordinates. Some GPS units will default to Degrees, Minutes & Seconds and others will be on Decimal Degrees which can throw off the location point a few miles. You also need to make sure you are on the same Geodetic Datum most common is WGS 84 but I have also seen people change to NAD 83. Check your settings and make sure both GPS units are setup the same.

By taking the GPS unit that was used to mark the points will be the best option.
