Parking in the snowies 1/31

Here is a good way to look at it:

if the oil, gas, and mining industry suddenly went tits up here in Wyo; the lodging industry would fast follow. I would wager a guess that places like Rawlins, Gilette, Casper, Rock Springs, etc had 75% of their rooms rented by oilfiled/mining workers.

So sure, "Tourism" might be 88% of our economy, but you need to look at the underlying factors in why the hotels and restaurants are utilized so much in this state, we sure as hell don't have that many flatlanders here at any given time...

The facts speak for themselves. The original idea was that your state wants people coming there and enjoying whatever it is that they enjoy. Because that's money in the pocket. I'm not at a battle of states here. I was just pointing out the facts. You can twist those facts anyway you want but the bottom line is your state gets a great deal of its moola from people visiting.

So before you go telling people to stay out.You should check your facts and not be so quick to label folks because of a license plate. And from me to you . Your always welcome to come to Minnesota and enjoy everything we have to offer.

I'm not trying to do a battle of states either. I'm trying to show you that there is more then just the statistics. The best quote I've ever heard dealing with statistics was from Mark Twain. It goes something like "There are three kinds of lies; lies, damned lies, and statistics."

What you need to do with your "facts" is see how they define "visiting."

Is it simply someone that is staying in a motel in that town, or is it someone from out of state?

In this state, half of the people "visiting" (if it is simply a room in a motel somewhere without consideration of why they are there or where hey are from) are from in state and are in that motel for work.

That, I'm afraid, isn't tourism by any definition of the word.

Now, if those statistics took into consideration if the person was there on a real vacation, or if they were from out of state, or if they were sight seeing; in other words if those statistics looked purely at a tourist then it would be another story.

You can't just say "Oh, look, 88% of the people in your state are directly employed by the lodging, food, or other related service industries therefore 88% of your economy is dependent on tourism." It just doesn't work that way.

If you drove across the state of Wyoming and didn't drive on the interstate, over half of the truck stops would have more oilfield trucks then over-the-road or tourist vehicles. Most of the motels (Pinedale anyone?) would be 90%-95% booked by, once again, oilfield personel. Most of the restaurants would, once again, be full of oilfield personel.

You don't need to get all high and mighty and tout your knowledge of economics, I am simply trying to show you there is more to the "tourism" in the state of Wyoming then some website's statistics can show...

Just a heads up. We were at chains end up from ryans park this week.Every day there was someone up there before us flatlanders . And three out of the five days there was 2 to 3 trucks and trailers parked like donkey's. Amazing thing was they all had Wyoming plates on them.

But we went around them and parked in the /////////// fashion to try and educate them on how your supposed to park.
