PAINTING PRO RMK HOOD

I have a limited edition white hood on mine, and it is simply a standard black hood that Polaris painted white. Probably the only thing I am disapointed in with this sled, as the white chips off very easily. I am hoping that I can sand it down and touch it up with good results....the side panels are cast in white plastic..wish they had done that with the hood. My point is, you are just as well off painting your black hood, because that is what you will get from Polaris anyway.

Actually, the painted hoods are made from a differnt material...

The red hood from the 2011 on the Std RMK and the Black hoods on all other models are made from High Density Polyethylene.

The painted hoods from those years (blue, white etc) are made from TPO (Thermo-Plastic Olefin).

Of the two .. The TPO paints easily... the Polyethylene, not so much.

See the posts above after I graft the threads together.

Please read from top to bottom... lots of good info here.

The white side panels are painted, in/out... and made of TPO.

If you sand yours down to the base TPO... you will need to use an adhesion promoter primer...

I like the Bumper and Cladding Adhesion Primer from Urethane Supply.

This is made specifically for TPO.

NOT to be used on HDPE though.

They offer a product called "Plastic Magic" adhesion promoter that they say is good on all plastics, but I've not tried it yet.

Both products are also available in qt. cans for use in a spray gun.

Lotsa good info,

THANKS Eric for pulling it altogether on Easter Sunday!

Couple of questions;

1) Do you know if the RED hood from the 2011 RMK (that you referenced above) is the BRIGHT RED that would match the red side panels on a 2013 PRO-R?

2) I'm in the process of a MINI-RZR 170 build for my daughter that has the 2010 PINK plastic body on it.
a) I need to do some "accent painting" on only small parts of that body & hood & rear fender area
b) Any idea of the type of material POLARIS used on the body?

Thanks

Decent match, yes... but it is molded plastic and not paint like the side panels... not glossy, nor with slight metallic like the side panels.

I can't speak with 100% confidence on the 170... but Polaris seems to use either HDPE or TPO for most parts... HDPE has a texture... TPO is usually smooth.

Eric,
THANKS a bunch.

The PINK plastic is solid color all the way through, and smooth and seems to be the same as on her POLARIS 2008 120 Dragon.

TPO likely then? And easier to apply paint

THANKS again

Have you drilled or scratched it yet?... Do you know for sure it is "through and through"

You don't need to order a full roll of vinyl off the internet. Any of your local sign companies have rolls and rolls of vinyl in all sorts of colors and durabilities and they will generally sell it to you by the foot. It's pretty cheap stuff and most sign companies have the ability to do different graphics for you. The things you can do with a vinyl wrap are pretty limitless. I wrapped my tunnel in solid white. My nuclear sunset orange snowcheck will have a black vinyl wrapped tunnel.

How about painting older hoods? I am working on my '94 Indy Lite and have a '92 hood to put back on it. It was painted at one time but the paint and surface were in real bad shape. I am about down to a smooth finish but will need to paint it. The possibility of a full wrap on the hood sounds interesting though.

Suggestions?
