OnStar will get you a ticket or prove liability

I agree. The government has much better things to do than watch me drive down the highway.

like watch who has guns?

I'm not saying they watch ya drive...but the tech is readily available and the temptation is great...

Did you ever think they would start listening to your cell calls and viewing your records. Of course not the govt has better things to do then keep tabs on honest CITIZENS phone activities.

A piece of black oxide finish aluminum foil covering the roof mounted antenna should render it disabled too. Black finish to disguise.

A tin-foil hat for you truck?;)

Actually GM won a lawsuit against the FBI for interfering with OnStar. It seems the FBI was listening in to what was going on in vehicles and interfering with GMs avility to provide emergency service.

OBD-II has been on vehicles since 1996 and often has data logging channels for speed. Throttle position...brake position...on and on to some 300+ channels that can be logged depending on manufacturer. Big brother is watching. Get your tinfoil hat! Maybe you too can some day push around a shopping cart on the street mumbling something being a Manchurian Canidate and Catcher in the Rye........

With this carbon dioxide cap and trade crap coming I guarantee you this will happen:

Congress will mandate that all new cars to have some sort of satellite reporting capabilities. The car will send miles traveled back to the government computer. If you go over your allowed carbon footprint, you will get a bill in the mail from the government asking to pay up.

(AND/OR)

With all the new cars getting better fuel economy, big brother is getting less tax revenue from gas. So they will change the way it is computed to miles driven instead. No need to self report this information, your car mounted satellite communicator will report it for you. If the government sees that your vehicle has not reported in for a set period of time, they will investivate why.........

THIS WILL HAPPEN FOLKS

All you paranoids should go dig a bunker and crawl inside... more snow for me!! :D

I love all of the statements of fact about things that may or may not happen. If you can predict the future, you should go to Vegas.

Personally, I could care less if the FBI is listening in on cell calls looking for keywords. Its actually pretty funny that a lot of you saying how bad this is are the same ones putting down the Dems for not wanting to fight terrorism.

How do you think we are going to defeat them if we dont use all of the technology available to us?

Plus, what do you have to hide, hmmmm??

Within 1 to 2 years of Pawlenty leaving office in MN it will happen.

On the plus side, we can have a snowest MN 4m meet and greet when we all get arrested.

Well when are you gonna call the FBI, CIA etc and tell them to go ahead and tap your phones and implant the chip into you....since you have nothing to worry about.

Are you pointing out hypocrisy? What a liberal... :p

I would *love* to meet the poor bastard who gets to go through all my IRC logs, clicking through the pictures I find... :)

I work for GM and have sold countless light trucks and cars with Onstar. It is not the boogie man calling in the black helicopters. It's one of the remainiing companies that hasn't shipped it's call centres off shore to India. Calling Onstar gets you a good old fashioned American worker trying to do a job.
Onstar won't keep track of your movements unless you ask them too and give them your PIN. If your car is stolen, Onstar has the ability to shut down your car. There are strict protocols when doing this. The tracked car has to be in plain sight of a patrol car and won't de-activate until told to do so by the attending law enforcement. You can't call Onstar to ask where your roving husband is. It won't babysit your kids. The technology is cell phone based. If you are in a remote area withour cell coverage, Onstar may not even work.

"Good Evening Mrs. Nusbaum, this is Onstar. Just wanted to let you know that your husband is over at Mike's shop fixing his sled and drinking beer. Should we go get him or just disable his car?"

There are reasons why car thiefs target Fords and Dodges. GM's are harder to steal, have pass key and Onstar. Ford has nothing.

There are thousands of people who have benefitted from this technology. If you don't have Onstar, let's hope you never hit a tree in the middle of nowhere or roll into the ditch.

The diagnostics and ability to recieve notifications can be turned off. YOur wife is driving her GM car down the road and the "Check Engine" light goes on. She pushes the button, an Onstar operator comes on and they check the code given. If it's something minor (loose gas cap etc) they will advise how to correct the issue. If it's more serious, they will tell you what to do. If it's catastrophic, they call Road Side Assistance and come and get you.

Onstar is not the government tracking your car. You are leaving a much larger trackable footprint surfing the net from your home computer. If they wanted you, they'd have gotten you by now just from your noticable snowest addictions.

Look, pal, you must be new here. You can't just log on and make intelligent arguements and start spouting off things that make total sense. Its not the way things are done around here.;)

The only people that should be concerned are those that have something to hide.... for the most part anyway

"Those who will sacrifice liberties for security deserve neither liberty nor security."
- Benjamin Franklin

The founding fathers would roll over in their graves over the statement you just made.

Typical paranoid thinking.

Yeah, the gov't is listening to your conversations in your car...right...why would they do that? You have NOTHING to talk about that they would want to hear. You and I are not important in the big scheme of things. Get a dose of REALITY!!

It's no different than the "big brother" paranoid hippies of the 60's.

The gov't wasn't listening then, and they are not listening now.

Spend your energy on something productive. Life is too short...this isn't practice!! One day you will be old and wish you hadn't wasted your energy on this cr@p.

It is a known fact that the NSA has supercomputers which search the internet(especially forums) for keywords, whenever those keywords are found it is saved to the computer.

Considering some of the things people have said on this forum(about Obama mostly) I can guarantee some of you guys usernames are saved on that computer and they are watching your posts.

Call it paranoid or whatever you want but it's a known fact in the techy world.

Not the same as the OnStar deal but just thought some would like to know.

Then there's Bush who authorized the monitoring of anyone and everyone's phone calls, domestic and foreign. Again, against our constitutional rights. Obama's not much different, just a different party.

"Cue the hardcore right/left wingers".

Fighting terrorism and listening in on people is not even close to the same thing. We are afforded a constitutional right to protect ourselves from unlawful search and seizures and that's exactly what this is. What is the point of protecting our country if we allow our country to take away our rights and protections afforded to us by the Constitution. If we allow the government to change the rules we are not protecting our country and it's ideals.

It has nothing to do with "what we have to hide". It's the simple fact that it is an invasion of privacy and against the constitution.

Anybody that supports this stuff is crazy.

Don't worry though, Bush and Obama like it that you're sheep and you follow their rhetoric by believing that this crap "protects you".

that's funny stuff!!!

Course one flaw in that rational arguement is that GM is now owned by the govt....

Wiki.. echelon... don't click it if you don't want them knocking...

They do it a lot, but it is automated to a very high level. I doubt there is someone looking at something for only posting bs on the internet. I am sure they were the first ones to notice a lot of people on the net are big talkers... ha ha.

So are you guys for or against the patriot act? Ben Franklin would role over his grave from that little gem too....

You guys think there are people out there doing all this. It is computers. There aren't enough people to do all the watching you guys are assuming...

IMO.. all the info goes into a database and called upon when looking for other collaborating evidence / directions of investigations.

From,

James Bond.. ha ha
