My brother is currently trying to buy a sled from a guy in Colorado. The guy is saying he has no title for the machine because Colorado doesn't due titles. Is this true?

Thanks guys,

CS

It is true, but he needs to get a bill of sale and the current registration card, Colorado registration cards/stickers stay with the vin for the life of the sled as long as it is in Colorado, if it as fairly new sled it should also have an MSO sheet from the factory. No card then he better check the vin with the POPO to see if it is stolen.

papers

agreed, no titles for sleds...I've always just sent in the vin and got a sticker here with no other paperwork......be a good idea to run the vin as there have been some thefts reported

I was sales manager at a ski doo and polaris dealer for the last two years. It is tru that colorado is a non title state. As stated above, a bill of sale and colorado ohv reg card are all you should need. Same goes for four wheelers and dirt bikes. I cant tell you how many times we ran into that at our dealership. Since we were close to New mexico we would get alot of out of state sales. A notorized bill of sale and reg is what they would require because they are a title state. They then issue you a title. But dont be freightened by no title just be smart. Alot of colorado folk just put thier MSO in a cabinet and never see it again.
I myself own a 2008 Dragon with no MSO (was a trade in) and a 2009 IQR racer with no title, it was lost by previous owner. What I did to protect myself is ran the vin's through the polaris dealer site. Any dealer will have access to it.

If you don't know the guy, or have a 100% way to find him, check the vin #!!

A guy on TGR just had his sled taken from him by the forest service, he went to register it & it was stolen. The guy is now out a sled & the money he paid for it.

get your wallet out

get your wallet out, because they will charge you tax on the sled when you register it (which isnt a huge shocker I suppose, BUT, whats really crappy.... I bought a sled when I lived in colorado, moved to washington, and they made me pay THE DIFFERENCE in sales tax. 6.6% in Hayden to the 9.6% in King County. I couldnt believe it. I had to show them my bill of sale from colorado, otherwise they would have charged me full tilt on it. B.S.!

I bought my 07 M8 in Castle Rock, CO and I have a title. It's actually a certificate of origin but I have it.

Colorado charges a flat fee to register a sled. About $25. Doesn't matter how much you bought it for or how old it is. Don't know about other states.

The guy gave us an original bill of sale from the dealer ship but utah wanted an official bill of sale on a napkin. Said it had to state names of buyer and seller make and model price of sale and dated and signed. So now I have to chase the guy down and get him to write me out a bill of sale.
