why don't some people get the message to stay out of the mountains?, i dont mean to be critical but why don't snowmobile clubs just close down areas when risks are so high? like last weekend.

Yeah, there were 23 people killed in their cars this week, why don't people just park their cars when it is so unsafe. And why don't the police just shut down the streets when the danger is so high?

Seriously......We all know the risks associated with the actions we take. The beauty of freedom is being able to decide which risks we want to take and which we don't. I agree that avvy deaths suck, but losing our rights to ride where we want would be the ultimate tragedy.

too many

This thread is about numbers only. read post 1. Not a place for lectures or debates. Just facts so the riding public is aware. That fact may prevent some deaths.

Here in Utah they are saying we are still far from out of danger this season. Please be aware.

51 total US and Canada! 1 More and we will have the same body count as last year! Lets hope we can keep it at 51.

Ride Safe!!!! Ride Smart!!!!

My brother and I have been friends with the Ellingford family for years. Just this year my brother scott was in a search and rescue mission for 15 year old Hayden Ellingford. Hayden, Colton, and their dad were all playing around Yamaha Hill in the high uintas on december 29th, 2008. Colton and his dad were climbin and playing on the hill. Hayden was at the bottom in front of a group of trees and got the surprise of his life. The hill slid and careened directly into hayden moving him and his sled over 50 yards into the trees. It took hours for my brother and the ellingford family to locate hayden. Unfortunately search and rescue was ill equipped and did not even have reliable machines to reach the accident site. This is what compells my brother and I to be involved with ever search and rescue mission ever set forth in the uintas in the last 15 years. We know the landscape and we can locate people better than the search and rescue team that has been "trained" to patrol this area. Anyways, hayden was killed instantly and wasn't located or dug out for 2 hours after the slide. My brother was the one who located and found his body and this really struck home for all of us here in the Uinta Mountain/ Evanston area. Hayden was loved by so many and we will all miss him so. Visit his memorial at http://www.myspace.com/rip_hayden271
We will miss you Hayden!

I would like to see the law mandate a license to sled! you need one to drive a car?
A training class would be nice but I fear it will be like a users manuel on a new sled, stuffed in the glove box and lost for ever without ever coming out of the wrapper.

I would like to see avalanches better investigated and those at fault held criminally and financially responsible. i.e. 2 on the hill, one stuck and the other just keeps riding and highmarks. The highmarker a lot of the time rides out, but the guy who was stuck is the one injured or killed. I have seen so many families devasted and so many don't even think twice when this happens. If we kill someone with our car, cause the accident, we are liable. Why shouldn't we be just as liable if we cause an avalanche and kill someone?

If I killed someone, I would make sure that they were taken care of. This is one reason for insurance, but I know it would not be enough. I would do whatever I could to help them.

Who ever would have figured 10,000 plus views of this thread. The count is hopefully done. There is still a lot of late snow and hot temps so ya never know. Let's hope that we will not hit numbers like this ever again. Be diligent, be smart, be vocal with your friends. May God bless all those friends we've lost doing what we all love. Remember them and their families in the years to come and please ride smart. A mistake lasts forever!!!! Peace. Rock!

Thanks guy's for keeping us informed. Thanks also to Idaho's Dept. of Fish and Wildlife for putting on FREE avy awareness classes. They were very helpfull and I'm sure saved a lot of pain for the surrounding communities! To those who lost a friend or family member this season, your in my thoughts and prayers!
