??? official Avy death tally for 08/09... SO FAR???

Thread Rating
5.00 star(s)
I was at the Priest Lake avi. It was a very large slide all the way to the dirt in areas. All I can say is wear a beacon and be safe.

Cut one loose on Friday NW Washington Mt. Baker. Perfect Bluebird day. No snow for six weeks and warmer weather made for an icy base. The new snow was sliding off everywhere. We were playin it safe staying off the real obvious bad stuff but even what I would consider a shollow slope with little wind loading wouldn't stay up. Should be setting up by now but every slope should be considered carefully right now with the icy base.

last sat at priest lake

after leading search and rescue back into trapper sat to the scene of the avy my friends and i went for a mellow ride . we stopped and talked to a couple guys about where we should go and we left them sitting there when we came back another avy had come down right where we were previously sitting . it was a very small slope and i wouldnt of thought twice about sidehillin across it . we later found out that the two guys set it off and didnt get buried thank god. even small unsuspecting slopes are extremely dangerous right now im seriously thinkin of parking my new sled for the rest of this season . Sleddin is almost the most fun a guy can have but so is makin it home to be with family and friends . ride safe ride in groups and always have the proper gear if not for you do it for your friends and fellow riders and their families . live to ride another day sorry for the bad grammer spelling and punctuation im a dirt guy not a computer whiz

the universal message this year is that this is not a normal year. and it will not be until it is over and summer arrives. Shallow snow is more suspect to the sun cooking through and releasing. in a normal year the snow would be deeper and less suspect to this at THIS point.

we are at 37 lost this snow season. To have it not go a single person higher would be the answer to a prayer. In the honor of those lost, learn from them and go home every day. spring snow is NOT hero snow THIS year.

Are you the big guy that we had some drinks with? Equipment operator? It was me (Jason) and Marc that sat with you. Sorry but I forget your name.

Up to 38. Latest was a Squaw Valley USA's ski patrol doing avalanche control.

Not sure though if we count the 85 year old lady that died when the snow from her roof buried her. It just goes to show how truely unstable the snow is, even on your roof.

I was up at the Copper Creek bowls last Saturday and saw the unconcievable evidence from a slide on the main bowl. This sluffs and occasionally has little slides. This was massive though. Took out major trees and the runout was more than 1000 ft past where it leveled off. If any one had been in what is considered the safe zone, they would have been swept into the trees and buried under 20 ft of snow.

Even though the worse seems to be behind us, there is still plenty left to kill. Be safe. Add 2000 ft to all safe zones.

Well, you my friend are an Allstar in my book. Too bad we didn't get to slap backs in a different situation. Next Crown and Coke is on me.

Lost a sledder over here yesterday. 45 minutes in the snow was to long to save him.

You know the scary thing is, I know a few different guys in the last two to three years that have been in them and lived but not a lot off people except friends know about it. More get hit by them then are being brought out in the public. Be Safe

I posted this in another avalanche thread. It put what is going on this year into perspective to me.... and makes me scared as crap to even look at a hill funny....

This came from todays avalanche report about this weekends death in Cooke City...

I have only seen this hill slide maybe once before this bad. It does break loose quit often though.... the gentleman that died forgot to turn on his beacon...

Speaking of staying out of the run out.... when people climb on this, most people sit and watch where the bottom group or searchers are.

sorry for your loss. I have loss two sledders in 2003 and 2004. One was family, the other a good friend. Each and every loss counts. We just cant get enought education to stop the cycle.

Interesting....I fractured my sternum just about 200 yards away from that hill on my way to climb it not too long ago.

That hill looks like a slick rock....no vegetation on it...those are the worst kind.
