Nytro Info Please! Come to my senses? Mb?

So, I'm wanting to look into a Nytro and wondering where its weaknesses are, what they need done, what to look for on used ones.

I'm a Doo guy, so I know I'd be looking closely at nuns on a Rev, compression, etc etc... Direct me to the weak links to keep an eye out for on these used Nytros?

I've accumulated that the 153 x 2.25 x 15 maverick is a POS??
Will a 16 wide fit on a stock tunneled Nytro??

Heard some guys complain about the rear suspension being weak in the rough trails? Mtn Tamer seems to be a popular choice? I like to rip through the moguls like the Rev happilly does with ease...IF i need to. ;)

Will the 7.4g? tank really get you through a "full" day of MOUNTAIN riding, 60-75 miles?

Do they "break in" at a certain mileage, as in, feel stronger??

I think I'll prob end up going MCX..so not too curious on after market exhaust atm..

On the MCX note, does the Nytro kit have less lag than the Apex kit? I have not 'test rode' a MCX Nytro yet, but had some time on a MCX Apex and I noticed the lag enough to make it feel slightly ackward to boondock with..

Honestly, I love the Rev chassis feel and balance.. and the one test ride I had on a Nytro felt much more similar to the Rev than the Apex ever did/will, to me. I just had an disliking to the lack of raw torque on the bottom end with the Nytro..

I know this won't be a 160HP 2 stroke (w/o the boost), but I'm aiming for reliability, I want to not worry about belts, not worry about pistons, cylinders, not worry about being towed in, not worry about running out of fuel 1/2 way through the day.. Not worry about long duration WOT or mid range runs.. I want to put the throttle to the bar all day long if its DEEP enough to permit and have it run ALL day long. :P

I'm another frustrated 2 stroke guy looking for salvation? I've already been trying to find ways to make excuses for the wt...like, get in shape, put on some muscle...buy a jack? lol Find new Yamaha buddies who will be willing to dig out another heavy Yamaha? ;)

Don't really know about comparing a Nytro to a Rev cause I was only on one for two minutes and I hated every second. Nytro is a blast to ride, funnest sled I've been on. Rear suspension sucks unless your in powder.

Nytro was awesome to carve, awesome to jump but don't expect to get the highmark. And you won't win any races, but if your looking for a reliable sled thats a blast to ride, this is your ticket.

I would've kept the Nytro but couldn't pass up the T-Apex I'm on now.

If you don't mind dealing with warranty claims and want a good performing stock sled, go with the XP. If you don't mind adding some extra's to the Nytro to get your addrenaline going, pick the Nytro. MCX kit has virtually zero lag for a rear mount. Add a better skid and track, motion bar riser and drive the snot off it all year, once turboed there is no sled like it. I have 23 years mountain riding Experience and have drove absolutely all sleds over the years, even John Deeres, Blizzards, poo's, doo's, cats yammi's, and am having the most fun on the TNytro. Yes it is a chore to throw around and it doesn't handle as easily compared to the 2 strokes, and stock won't compare to the others as far as performance, but the reliabilty is awsome so far on mine. I plan on running my Nytro 5+ years and only get 1 to 2 seasons out of the 2 strokes before engine overhauls.
Nytro issues are small fuel capacity
Rear exhaust poses fuel can issues
Maverick track not very good
Rear skid to soft on the beat up trails and cornice drops
Low stock HP
Weight
Summit issues are
Drive shafts
Clutching
belts
injection oil costs
cranks breaking off
3000km max engine life with reliability IF YOU GET A GOOD ONE
Difficult to get big HP and reliabilty is still an issue
More to purchase
Just like the other couple hundred on the hill each weekend
Stinks up your shop and trailer
This is just my thoughts, I had two summits in the shop last season, and now have two yammis instead and no turning back.
To each there own

Buy A Jack

buy a jack?

Definitely buy the jack. I just saved an M1 the other day with it so it's not just for the "heavy" yamahas...

I love my Nytro. I had a great season riding it stock and expect to throw on a SC in 2 winters to make it seem "new" again.

I think the track sucks though. Will be upgrading to a power claw next season. Same size and all.

Good luck with your decision.

All sleds have their advantages as well as disadvantages. The Nytro is the best of the best as far as mountain 4 stroke offerings right now from the manufacturers. If you are going to install an MCXpress kit then HP will not be an issue. The biggest issue I have with this sled is the handling, or lack thereof. I turned around the rubber bumpers under the skis, adjust the ski alignment, and tighten the stock shocks almost all the way up. The skid is sub-par at best. I have installed quite a few Timbersled setups and they work really well. We have also been putting in M7/M8 Arctic Cat skids and they work well with a shock revalve. If you get the reverse model check the bolt that holds bottom sprocket on.

You can lighten it up via exhaust, suspension, suspension drop brackets etc.

The biggest pluses on the Yamaha are reliability. I was kidding the guys at the shop the other day because we are always working/modding the M8/M1000s and told them the only reason my Nytro has to come in the shop is to thaw out!!!

Do they "break in" at a certain mileage, as in, feel stronger??
Everyride during the first 500 miles, it gets stronger and stronger

Do it

There is very little lag, and with it geared down. It is like a bullit
Honestly, I love the Rev chassis feel and balance.. and the one test ride I had on a Nytro felt much more similar to the Rev than the Apex ever did/will, to me. I just had an disliking to the lack of raw torque on the bottom end with the Nytro..
The stock Nytro will lug up a hill at 1/4 throttle while the rev is pinned. Not in the powder. The weight of the Nytro is amplified by the powder covered hills. If you like the Rev, you should love the Nytro

With a turbo you wont need the thing wide open all day. Setup and proper fuel is everything. Reliability is a 100% better than any other sled I have ridding. ultimately reliability is rider and maintenance driven

had a dragon 8 snowchecked ended up with a sc nitro, holy crapola what a sled. your right about alot of things though. i have 280hp stage 2 sc, its awesome now, but needed the fuel upgrade (not in the kit) check the pully bolts every ride, and change the track. this is what i have gathered from many months of reading and riding. the mcx is the boost of choice, mid mount, very little lag but they do reccomend upping your engagement to minimize this. my sc engages very low and pulls "wow". raced a rev and 1000m in on the trails from the mountain and slaughtered them, but you have to suck up the limiter strap so it handles good and doesn't come over backwards all the time on the hill. put on heavy apex springs on the back suspension. its great, but from what i hear, the mountain tamer is awesome. i put 162 2.5" mtn extreme with apex rails on mine. 16 wide can be made to fit with modifying aftermarket drop brackets but is cracking the tunnel in some cases. as far as start and go all day everyday and blow everything away, wow, what a sled. and who really enjoys pulling the rope to start, really? luv the sled

Couldn't agree more with this statement!!!

Holy crap DJ!! You are really going to do it?? :) Should have said something DJ I just spent the last two days at the Ears and had a ball, could've tooK her for a spin, although I'm sure you have already well test drove them.. I did not read all the posts in this thread but my concerns are the the following:
Tipping the 4 stroke on it's side and having oil run out of the tank. I have had mine on it's side(upside down once) a bunch of times, luckily no real issues yet, but I have not opened up my air box yet to look... ;)
The first year models have a problem with their subframe (where the A frames bolt to) bending easily, again luckily mine is still straight, I even rear-ended Mark this weekend, pretty dam hard, and she's still straight. Shoved that right ski right up his tunnel . Dented my shock body and everything... So I don't know maybe my serial # is a good one???? 550 plus miles on mine.
We did close to 60 miles today at the Ears, cut up lots of meadows and I still had about 1 1/2 gallons left in the tank, I was on the throttle most of the day. There is a 10 gallon tank for them.
I love the sled, I don't think you'll be dissapointed. You'll have so much free time on your hands you won't know what to do with yourself, no more wrenching!!! Good Luck!
Oh by the way, BUY a JACK regardless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Made the switch

Rotax,
After two seasons riding my XRS, I was wishing for more power. I literally squeezed everything I could out of my 07 Doo and had it set up perfect for me. At 1700 miles, the engine blew. It was under warranty, but still pissed me off.
I have been on Doo for the past 8 years and would have liked to stay on them but I have not been impressed with the XP's. I rode my buddies 154 and a 163 a few times and wasn't that psyched on how they carve compared to my rev(s). Besides the reliability and belt issues, I haven't seen one XP that could outclimb my set up 07. I can hear the XP owners *****in now. ;)
I was really hoping for a new 1000 in the XR chassis, but it didn't happen.

A trip out to Logan UT sparked my interest in the turbos. I decided to check out Yamaha's just cause of the 4stroke reliability and the boosting ease.

After reading as much as I could in the forums and checking out the 09's, I was debating what to do. I went out and demo'd a Nytro one day, I took it into the trees, threw it around, carved it up and after 20 minutes of riding, I was sold.
I put it a new Nytro in the truck and took it home.

Yea, they say it's heavier, but it doesn't feel like it when I ride it.
Strange thing is that I have been more tired after a day of riding the doo than I have been after a 60 mile day on this Nytro. Honestly, the only time you notice the weight is if you get stuck.
Good news, weight is fairly easy to dump on this thing. Timbersled front and back, light weight battery and you are -57 lbs. You can get to -100lbs before the serious coin adds up.

The track will do until you turbo it, then it won't have enough grip. I'm getting my MCX kit installed in a few weeks. There's already a new 156x2.5x16 in the garage ready to go. Coincidentally it's the same track I installed on my XRS when I dumped the challenger lite track. It's tight but it fits.
My plan is to dial this Nytro in right off the bat, then gas and go for the next 4 years.
That's gas and 220hp of go, on pump gas.

After riding Sledskiing's MCX T-Nytro today, I found out that 220hp can put a really big smile on your face, with absolutely no lag. :beer;

Thanks for all the replies.

I am and have been Doo through n through..I'm not even old enough to bit(h n moan about it yet, but have had my share of time n $ put into my own sleds.. I want a quiet (as in, no ear plug), reliable, turn key, pull trigger sled.. More n more, "no oil" is becoming appealing, less/no smoke. Specially with gas prices, removing daily oil costs isn't going to hurt my feelings.

It'll take coin to get it where I think I want it, but hoping at least I can worry less about engine issues and more about...well, riding, and how far the rabbit holes really go! ;)

I'll agree, the short time I had on an XP 800 I was disapointed...and mostly with the carving aspect.. There were some setup issues w/ the one I rode I think, but, thats another thing I really don't wanna deal w/ each ride..

Thanks again for the feedback! Chris, I need to test ride your Ttro? :D

DJ, I rode with Hillclimber yesterday and I would say he has a very similiar riding style as you do. He took a spin on my T-Nytro and made it look like he's been riding it all season.

Let's see what's up for next weekend. I can ride the Phizzer while you ride the Nytro. I think i am free.

Bushy has some vid from today of a little hill climbing up north. I'm sure that will convince you.

Weak point is the subframe or something up front. You can see it in the garage (one ski in front of the other) but i did rip off my kill switch and hit a few trees today :)

The stock tank is fine for most days at RE's. Maybe not the REAL Deep days.

You missed this season. Think of all the gas, oil & plugs you saved up for the boost project ...haha

Wait a minute, I tore off my kill switch Saturday, you did yours Sunday?
That's too funny. There's the weak spot, I'm filling in that sucker with silicone tomorrow.

I got my doo back with a new engine last Friday, I should have my twin pipes back from ceramic coating this week. I'll load up both sleds in the trailer and either of you can ride my Nytro if you want. It's supposed to snow all week and be nice for Sat and Sun. Hopefully some light and fresh will help the new doo engine break in properly.

3000km max engine life with reliability IF YOU GET A GOOD ONE

are you referring to any skidoo engine or the R on its own?

i understand why people are buying nytros save money on oil and possibly belts...... but they are not for real technical tree riding you may as well open your pocket book to lighten it up.... and is it just me but why are you guys not all that ticked off about the tracks suspension and sub frames? i no people who hated xrs track there dealer phoned up skidoo and they sent them the normal non x model track, and suspension to soft why isnt yamaha dealing with this either seems like every one says the same thing bout them... and the sub frames bending hitting objects at slow speeds on threads i have read why doesnt yamaha step up and fix everything like doo is doing for 09 or at least they are addresing there issues....

I'm not starting this post for a Doo vs Yam ... lets say... argument..

Doos have weak points w/ their Nuns and bulkheads..I've dealt w/ it first hand. I know Cats can have the same issue. What has Doo done to fix that? Not sure how the XPs held up in that area this year??

Sounds like maybe the Nytro needs a different "bending/twisting" point the same the Rev need(ed)..

Tracks, I don't understand why 153 was the only option, that seems silly for a "mountain" sled n all. But all manuf have played the track game in the last few years haven't they? Attack 20 (works for some, doesnt for others), Doos 'lite' worked for some, not for others? I guess Yam played the same game this year.

Honestly, I'm a lot more concerned about engine issues...or lack there of at this point. I can deal with the other things, or hell, you can even finish the day w/ other things failing, aside from a complete dismemberment, but if an engine does, or is an issue...it ruins the day, the weekend, the trip and so on. Tracks will still "work" and can be replaced, engines are much tougher to replace.. cheaply..easily...etc

Get me some pics/vid. :D

I sold my xrs 159 in Dec. and got a nitro. It will go any were I want to go and I enjoy riding it. Stock it will not set the high mark, but what stock sled will anyway? It starts when you turn the key, it gets decent gas milage, (60-70 miles on a tank), generally it is a capable sled. Oh and the crank wont break, the piston rings don't flake, and the main bearings don't seem to spin. Also you don't have to adjust your fin clickers all the time. I feel like it is the best stock boondocker I have ridden, climbs acceptably well, and I trust it to get me back to the truck. I have tasted the turbo and the thought is hard to resist, but I don't need it so I will spend that money on another needles toy that will cost me money and may result in a hospital stay. The chase for the best toy is a never ending one, you pays your money, you takes your chances, sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. I like the Nitro.

Rev to Nytro

Lots of this switching going on...

Been riding Doo for 4 years now, and just switched to the Nytro....

I have ZERO brand loyalty, and like you, I wanted bullet proof reliablity, but did not want weight penalty...

My rev, was nowhere near stock (See below link), so my comparison is pretty like for like...

Here is a list of what I have done to the Nytro...(dry weight is 553 for my anniv. edition) Dry weight of my 04 summit was 493 (as per doo site)

Timbersled Mountain Tamer -38++ lbs. off
Timbersled Drop Brackets...
Timbersled Bark Buster Front end kits-10 lb savings
Removed Sway bar (spring is tightened all the way down)
Simmons Skis
Better Boards
Trail Tank 10.4 gallon tank...
Clutching- removed stock secondary spring went to Arctic Cat Yellow set at 60*

Normal riding is between 6-10K

Roughly 300 miles on sled...

Was at 8100 RPM's two days ago, yesterday sled was spinning at 8300 with occasional bump up to 8325 or so....

this sled set up this way, is WAY easier to ride than my rev, is WAY more predictable doing powder donuts, jumps easier (let off throttle vs. brake to pull nose down), climbs better (mainly due to suspension, track is getting swapped to 162x2.5"x15)

for me (cant speak for other rev riders) hands down, this sled is easier to ride, not as tired out, is more predictable etc. It is without a doubt an easier sled to handle...everyone whom I ride with has commented that it looks easier to ride...

couple issues with it for me:

The boards are still pretty weak but then I am not a small guy...
The steering is really odd compared to other sleds (need to find a fix for this), but it is somethign you can get used to...
Went through first set of Hyfax in 200 miles (dealer set-up had the track banjo tight!!!

where do i find info on the 10 g tank, can't find much by google searches.
whos making/selling it? cost? does fuel pump need to be swapped (unsure of fuel pump location)

yeah, i saw the fling post for may..i'll see what i can come up with.
