A Mayor of one of the towns expecting the worst from hurricane Harvey tells residents
"If you don't evacuate, take a marker and write your SS# on your arm so you can be easily identified"

That's a sobering point of view.

Here's hoping people take the advice and evacuate.

Wow, they are predicting areas could possibly get up to 50" of rain.
I can't even imagine that.

... And you will have a swimming pool full of water fall every 20 feet...

It's like naturally occurring waterboarding.

Someone not willing to evacuate must surely have a death wish.

I know I have a different perspective than many people on this and the complete opposite of Mafesto but I think its pretty noble of someone to leave a pet behind to make more room, supplies, etc etc available for human life. I would gladly sacrifice leaving my dog if it meant that someone else's child got into a rescue boat or had a little to eat for dinner. When supplies and help are limited I think its a waste to use those limited resources on a pet. I also really struggle with people taking pets into a shelter or store for that matter. If you ever have ever had or have a child with severe allergies you know what it does to have someone bring a dumb dog into a store with them because they don't want to leave them at home. On top of all the other horrible things these people are having to deal with I wouldn't want my pet to add to someone else's misery if the are allergic to them. When it comes down to it for me human life and well being is much more important than that of pets.

I don't entirely agree with you, but I appreciate the reasoned counterpoint.

I think that's pretty dramatic, and a pretty unlikely scenario for a person with a brain to encounter that scenario. That said, I likely would not need outside help for evacuating or shelter during a weather emergency....so our dog would definitely be part of our plan.

If I had to choose between my dog, or someone else's child, I would stay back with the dog, wouldn't even need to give it thought.

I have loved all of my dogs, but not equally.
When we had to put my last one down, I have never felt so empty. Literally looking forward to the other side to be with her again. That's how much some people's "dumb dogs" mean to them.

Your view is different than mine, and I understand it. You are not wrong, but neither am I.

Totally I would just stay behind and figure something else out....the scenario wouldn't come up because a) it's massively unlikely and b) leaving the dog behind is not an option for me

Different mindset

I grew up in a family that had NO PETS. I brought a snail home from a campout once & my stepdad flushed it. When I turned 17, my girlfriend gave me a fish for my birthday. My mom knew about it, but I had to keep it hidden in my room.

One of my first acts of "rebellion" when I got married & moved out was to get a cat. My wife & I are extreme animal people. Dogs. Cats. Goats. Chickens. Whatever. We joke that we have an invisible sign that only animals can read "Strays Welcome Here."

I live 25 miles away from my parents. They don't come to our house, primarily because of the pets. My mom is "allergic" to cats. Take a zyrtec. We have to put on sweaters to visit them because they keep their house frozen, summer or winter. I love my parents, but they just don't get us. I love my animals & they are part of my family. Non animal people won't get it.

Pet ownership is something that you commit to. (My pets tend to own me). And sometimes you miss out on things. I'm glad there are people like this:
Stores Full Of Furniture, 'Mattress Mack' Opens His Doors To Flood Victims

Maybe pets shouldn't be allowed in normal public shelters, but there are enough animal lovers out there that we can help take care of each other.

That would be our most likely and most severe threat locally for sure. There's a good one burning about 10 miles from town right now (not a threat)....it's definitely something that's around many summers.

I'd be very confident in my chances of evacuating safely in short order, and having somewhere to go. I wouldn't be the guy worried about the house and trying to save it till the last minute....that sh!t is insured and I have 0 sentimental value when it comes to stuff like that.
