Need shotgun suggestions

So I started reorganizing my gun safe today and found some 3" mag 12ga shotshells that a family friend gave to me. Problem is that none of my 12ga shotguns are chambered for 3" shells. So rather than give the shells to my cousin I figure I'll use this as an excuse to buy a new shotgun:D. I'm looking for a cheaper pump or auto (auto would be pretty cool IMO), maybe a defender style? I haven't really kept up on shotguns in the last while so I'm not sure who has better quality, craftsmanship etc.

Suggestions?

Thanks guys

Luke

I just bought 2 of these mossberg 500's, havnt read anything bad about them not top of the line but durable and get the job done.

Told ya Luke. Find yourself a nice mid 70's Belgium Broadway over under Dana grade. IMO probably the best shotgun ever built to date.

shotgun

Remington 870 is probably one of the best shotguns for the price. I like my 80 way better than my buddies high dollar Benelli. (sp)

I have the little 500 mossberg with the 18.5" barrel and pistol grip(bear gun). My buddy has an 870. I like the 870 better. The pump slides easier and is definitely smoother. But I also paid $290 for mine. My next shotgun will either be FN SLP or Wilson, I really like the Wilson though...http://www.wilsoncombat.com/s_standard.asp

Benelli Super Black Eagle. 3.5" semi auto. By far, the BEST shotgun(semi) ever made. Have had mine for 8 years? I think, cleaned only once, never jammed, never faltered. Had a berreta pintail semi..........POS.

Rem 870 Super Express. I bought one with the Teflon Camo finish about 12yrs ago. Been low crawling through mud, snow, rain, ice, water puddles etc. Never had a problem with it. Hands down the best pump shotgun out there with the numbers sold and track record to back it up. I love the teflon finish. no need to worry about rust and just clean the inside of the barrel. I also own an old Model 12, Browning Light Twelve Auto A-5, Benelli SBE, Win Super X3. Killed plenty of Ducks, Turkey, Geese, Grouse. I pretty much use my Autos for Ducks and geese in the boat. I like my Model 12 for pheasant cause I can hold up to 9 shells in it. And when the weather hits the fan or jumping geese & ducks the 870 is my goto workhorse. It is also nice having the shorter barrel with the turkey special as it so happens it's makes it easier to bail out of a car faster when road hunting for roosters. Auto's are nice but you would have to wrap them in a plastic bag for some of the stuff we get into. Alot of guys think they need an auto and been on many hunts with guys out of state that think they need one that shoots so fast, little recoil etc. Not to talk smack but I have yet to find a non local that in a field environment that can outshoot me with their auto when I carry my pump. Two birds get up and I'm shooting the second one while they are still pulling a bead on the first bird I already shot. Don't get me wrong though, I consiously have to slow down so they get shooting in as they are paying to hunt. Occasionally I may have someone who can come close to the draw on the first bird but they can't move to the second and shoot near as fast as what they hope to and still know where the first dropped. And when I have any my auto's I am accurate and deadly with each shot. I would hands down pick up an 870 SUPER-Express (Super shoots 2 3/4-3 1/2) and make sure it's wrapped in camo,

870,.... i spent $300 on mine last summer just the genaric 26" barrell wood stock, chanbered in 3"..... i dont treat it very nice, its the gun that all my friends who arent allowed to own guns get to shoot. we put a LOT of rounds through it, sometimes sorta clean it and it works like a champ.

My bro's gun SBE jams all the time. Sent it back twice still does it.
He hates it. It was a gift from his wife so he puts up with it.

Point??? Some times you get a good one some time not!!!;)

Well need to know what you want it for.....do you want a home defense shotgun or an all around sporting pump? You said cheap right? Cheap and reliable sporting pumps are the Remmy 870 like mentioned and the Browning BPS. If you want a home defense shotgun with a decent price buy the Mossberg as mentioned. I have a Mossberg 500A. It has a collapsable stock and pistol grip, of course the extra long magazine. I know I didn't pay over 400 for it...like 370 or something.

BTW, I own all three guns I have mentioned. I have had my Browning BPS pump since I was 12 years old....and I will be 36 this month. I bought it with my paper route money. The gun has never failed me. I won the Remmy 870 at a Pheasants Forever Banquet.....gave it to my son...he is still a bit small for it....but I have used it and it is a good gun.

Have to second this post my SBE is a sketchy piece at best 870 got more foul than the SBE ever will in my house. Benelli is not the best at machining . Just my opinion.

Go with a 870! Cheapest parts, most available accessories, and arguably the most relieable pump shotgun ever produced.

Their is some wicked stuff available to create a mean defense weapon!!

I agree about the Benelli machining, but that is easily fixed by smoothing out some turns and stuff in the action. I love my SBE. It just shoots and shoots and shoots.

870 is an amazing pump gun. Those things shoot forever and very reasonable price.

I've NEVER had a problem with my Browning BPS. The gun is indestructible. I hunt ducks, geese, grouse, woodcocks, and I shoot trap, skeet, and well, just about anything I can. I've crawled through the mud, dirt, rocks, water, sticks, and just about everything else associated with hunting and that gun still works like a champ.

Its cheap, reliable, and one of the best pump shotguns I've ever owned.

I have never shot an 870, but my friend has never had an issue with his, so that's a good option too.

The only gun my group has ever had any real problems with is my cousin's Benelli Nova. That thing has been nothing but trouble since he got it. Guess he got a lemon.

Oh well, take from my post what you can.

all depends on what you are looking for..

pump:
1. browning bps
2. benelli nova
3. remington 870 (newer one.. they have gone down hill in the last couple of years.. crappy metal and finishes.. plus their machining has gone to chit.. if you can find one 4-5 years old.. they are a great shotgun)

semi's:
1. Berreta.... simply the best shotgun in the business
2. Browning.. very well built guns.. just a little heavy.. but for the 3.5mags they are nice
3. fiochie.. made by berreta.. very nice guns.. hard to find in mag. chambers
4. benelli.. also made by berreta... one of those deals.. some good ones.. but a lot of bad ones out there..

I have tested lots and lots of shotguns in some of the nastiest, dirty places including goose pits, blinds, marshes, etc.... fact of the matter.. there is no semi that wont jam eventually.. and the semi's have much more recoil..

Now if your into SxS or OVU shotguns.. thats a much more complicated decision..

I would say that for the money the fiochie auto's are some of the best guns on the market..
