Need help with adjustable hitch issue

Hey,

I have a DiversiTech (DT Towing) adjustable hitch that I lent to my wifes grandpa. It appears someone may have tried to get the hitch off without a key and now the slot the key fits into to remove the hitch is turned so the key cannot fit anymore. Has anyone every had an issue like this, and is there a way to be able to get it either (1) back down to the slot to fit the key in (2) twisted further to at least get the hitch out of the receiver??? Here's a pic of what is should look like with an arrow to where the slot is now. Thx.

Sorry to hear that. My hitch got all coroded with salt and my key wouldn't turn. I took it to a key and lock shop and they just drilled where you insert the key and finally was able to push the pin down and slide it out. It took them a while. If you have some strong drill tools try it out but you'll need a new lock after

Thx for that info. Based off your experience would it be more cost effective to go the locksmith route, or just get another hitch? They are around $180-$200, but you could probably rack that up in a couple trips to get the old one figure out. Any other thoughts are welcome.

Go the locksmith route it cost me about $15 for them to do it. It looked like a real pain in the a$$ but they got it off. Just buy another lock after. This winter I won't be keeping my hitch on all the time and hopefully will prevent this issue and getting a lock that has little covers for the key.

Thx. I'll be trying a couple things to see if I can get it lined up, but if that doesn't work we will prob take it to get drilled out. Either way, still a good hitch that I use a lot. Just going to keep it on my truck from now on. Never had an issue til I let someone borrow it (which is usually the case).

Got it off. Just filed the bottom tab off the key so it would slide in without having to be lined up. The lock isn't flush like the other part, so I think someone definitely tried to get it off somehow, but it worked fine once I got the key in.

I take mine off after each use that way no one is tempted to take it plus it stays cleaner .

I'll be flat out honest with you. I'm way too lazy to take it on and off, as it seems I just put it back on within a couple days for something anyway. My guess is Gpa had someone eying it when he stopped at the casino out on the Rez, or it could have just been some freak deal that finally happened. Safely back on my truck now and never coming off. Stopped worrying about staying clean since my house is down a gravel road. Unfortunately nothing is ever clean unless it stays in the shop 24/7. Tribe just approved a $40 million hotel and event center and can't spend $15 grand to pave my road??? WTFO :boxing:
haha, oh well.
