My kids are exhiled from the table for eating PBJ

So my two kids are 6th and 8th grade. There are days they dont like the lunch room food so the wife makes them a cold lunch. Wife made them PBJ today and they both whined. I asked what the deal was since they like PBJ and they said "If we bring PBJ we cant sit with our friends, they make us sit by ourselves" Come to find out the kids that are alergic to peanut butter there parents dont want there kids even around it so the school exhiles all the PBJ kids and makes them sit by themselves...so we have 1% of the kids alergic and our schools make the 99% people make the adjustment. Our systems are screwed up.

We have a 5% minority in our town that complains (and usually gets their way) about the start date of the school year every fall.

Because of the Ravalli Co Fair 4-H.

It's silly.

After re-reading my post I dont want to sound un-compassionate about kids with allergies. Its not so much about the PBJ thing is it is really about how far we goto change for the minority. I am sure peanut allergies are not a new thing and look we all managed in school without this type of policy.

Yeah it sucks....but I guess some people have peanut allergies so severe that even being within proximity to peanut products, can cause a reaction. Peanuts are not dispensed on planes for the same reason.

In the case of kids I get it though. The allergy can be severe enough to cause death, and a kid might not catch it in time to adminster the epee pen like an adult.

I just consider myself lucky enougth to have three healthy daughters without those types of problems.

What doesn't make since...to me...is those who choose to eat peanut butter or have peanut products are the ones that have to move?

At my daughters they have a table set aside for the kids who have the allergery. Which makes completly more sense just for their own safety. I am sure not all kids make the move over to the PBJ table....or even aware if a peanut product is contained in what they are eating.

I would request a change to this type of system...strictly for the safety of those kids in need. ;)

Segregating ANYONE in the lunchroom can easily lead to problems.
You know how kids are...especially the ones who are NOT the ones being segregated.

Have her site at a different table, then throw a bag of peanuts to her friends. Seriously though, my freinds' son has this allergy and it's so bad he can't take a chance and sits separate from his friends.

They also no longer allow homemade snacks at school parties because of these allergies, only purchased snaks that claim to not have peanuts in them.

Crazy...

So did these allergies not exist when we were kids or what?

Remember those FAT kids in grade school??? They weren't fat, they were just swelled up all the time!

Yep, we were not allowed to bring homemade snacks when it was our turn either. Store bought only, so the kids got Oreos.

I don't have a peanut allergy, but I have a shellfish allergy just as violent. If a cook even touches the same grille that shrimp were cooked on and then prepares my steak. I get anaphalaxis. So I generally don't eat at places that also serve shellfish.

I feel for the allergic kids but I don't think that the "normal" kids should be moved and forced to sit alone. Kids can be cruel and bitterness would ensue. If I was school admin, I'd think of something different. Chit, even asking parents to not pack peanut products for lunches would be an answer. There are so many different lunch options now.

Insenstive douche canoe!!!!

In all seriousness I'd say something like Dizzles school does sounds good. Have a known peanut free table for the kids with issues.

aahhhhhhhhhh screw it.........

They should just have PB&J day and thin the herd....schools are over crowded anyway.

:peep:

Same deal at my kids school. Truth is, there isn't a great solution. Kids with severe allergies can't sit by kids who might have those foods. If you move the "normal" kids, then they sit by themselves. If you move the allergic kids, then they gotta sit by themselves. Either way, somebody has to be excluded. (Don't worry though, with the way our society is headed, there will be counseling and therapy available for anyone who was made to feel as though they didn't fit in perfectly...) Apparently they have asked parents not to pack peanuts/peanut butter but many still do it anyway.

I agree with what was already said. Where the h*ll were all these peanut allergies when we were kids? I don't rememeber this ever being an issue when I was in school.

We could set that Mr. Peanut guy loose in the lunchroom and let him start giving hugs...

Part of the school lunch program is dealing with food allergies, etc. They have a controlled kitchen that prepares food SAFELY. So the lunch room is designed for this system. Since your kids are "importing" their lunch in, it makes sense that they cannot sit there. Sorry this may sound harsh but the system is setup to be safe for everyone. By doing this the school district can safely assure parents of kids that have allergies that they won't be around it or be exposed to it while in their lunch room.
