Move to Utah?

I have an opportunity to move up to Utah for a few years and work at the University of Utah. Was wondering if I could get a few pro's and con's for living in that part of the state? We are also looking for an area to live in somewhat close to the school maybe 25 miles or so. If we do move I was thinking we might purchase a house and are looking for a newer construction home with maybe 1/2 acre minimum and 3 car garage. We have never been in Utah so just looking for some opinions of those that live there. Thanks in advance.

great place to live. It is a little expensive but im sure someone on here knows of a good spot to live. I love it here. But i havent lived anywhere else to know the difference

Utah is great! A good place to look for a house is the west farmington area, about 20 min or so the University. You may not want to go back to AK after you ride the Utah Powder!

I just moved from Anchorage to Utah about a month ago. It's a very nice place and has lots of outdoor stuff to do. PM me if you want to ask anything specific or difference from AK

something close to the 215 loop , ease of access to anyplace

my employer has some equipment at the UofU, so ive been here... access in and out is horrible, but the view of hit young tenders walking around is all worth it:face-icon-small-ton

i moved here 5 sled seasons ago, AK was fun.....but its not for me

Lots of Mormons and mormon influenced social mores! And all the women are taken cuz every guy has about 5 wives. Learn to like 3.2 beer and deal with lots of traffic jams.

Those are all the complaints I have to hear about from my co-workers when we go to Utah. Its a good place to live and raise a family, has great recreation (winter and summer), and there are some good people here and there. :D

Well if your from Colorado, I can see how the laws against bestiality might cramp your style. "Real" beer is available at the liquor stores and polygamy only exists on cable television.

I know, I lived in Utah (Utah County) for over 10 years. I was just mocking the people that say that crap.

move to west bountiful, you can get horse property out there w/ new construction. 20 minutes or 14 miles from the U of U. What would you be doing at the U? My wie is in nursing school there.

polygamy only exists on cable television.

bullsheet. They moved out but we previously had polygamous neighbors here in Sandy up until about 6 months ago. I also work with several. I can only immagine that there are even more as you head north or south.

It may not be as common as they used to be but they aren't just on tv.

I moved here from the east cost a few years ago. Some things were kind of odd at first but you get used to it pretty quickly. Overall it's pretty good here. Seems like a decent job market, I think the schools are good overall (no kids but this is what I hear), access to the mountains is amazing and it really is probably the best snow on earth or at least in the lower 48.

If you're a city person then you might be disappointed but coming from AK, you're probably not.

Utah is an endless resource for outdoor enthusiast's,
80% of the state is set aside for public use. From red rock gorges as low as 3000 feet to peaks as high as 13,000 feet,

you can discover the outdoors at all extremes. and all Within minutes of Utah's metropolitan areas

You can explore activities such as camping, hiking trails, rock hounding, fishing, fly fishing, ATV trails, Golfing, wildlife viewing, Horseback riding, Mountain Biking, skiing, cross country skiing, ice skating, snowboarding snowmobiling snowshoeing, hunting boating one min and snowmobiling the next. Caving/spelunking, paragliding, Most Utah outdoor activities are located only a few minutes’ drive from Utah Valley’s major communities, so they are easy to access--and many offer the added bonus of a breathtaking drive along the way.

Scenic Drives and Fall Colors
Utah is a very beatiful state

as far as polygamy Some groups that left the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the mid-1800s continue to perform plural marriages, but they have no affiliation with the LDS church. or mormons!
who are known as Fundamentalist Latter-day Saints who are involved in polygamy today and they are subject to excommunication in the real mormon church, I have never seen any myself but I guess that they are around??

the only bad thing I can say about Utah is the 3% Beer.. other than that I love it here!!!

Finding something with a 3 car garage on a 1/2 acre, within 25 miles of the University might be a little pricey. Like others have mentioned, I would recommend either Bountiful/Farmington (20 minutes is very optimistic for driving time from Farmington, 30 minutes is more realistic to the U) or somewhere on the south end of the I215 belt route. In Bountiful or Farmington you would be a 5 minute drive from great riding.

As far as snowmobiling, you will love the terrain and the variety of choices for riding areas within an hour of Salt Lake. If you end up making the move, pm me about hooking up for a ride.

The only thing you need to know about commuting to the University of Utah is stay away from Foothill drive....(way too many professors in Subaru's going 10 mph under the speed limit so they can feel like they are doing there part to stop global warming.) Recreationally Utah is the most diverse place on earth and has everything but the ocean to offer. Religiously....Bountiful/Centerville area might be quit a culture shock but you can count on living around great people/families. :smow:

I moved to Bountiful, UT 10 yrs ago from Wyoming. About 1/2 the time I absolutely hate this state and the people. That is mostly during the fall and the winter. It seems like 1/2 this state hunts and about 10% of that I would trust not to shoot me cuz they saw something move. There are some good recreation here but the population of Utah is too high for the recreation they offer. Boating on a wknd here is scary!!

Be prepared to possibly be treated as an outsider if your not a member of the church. Not all that bad unless you have kids then its truly heart breaking!

The education here sucks! Too many kids per class not enough teachers or class rooms and they don't pay the teachers enough to get the better teachers to come into the state. There are some great charter/private schools that are poping up here and there but it's hard to send your kids to a school where none of their neighborhood friends go.

On the plus side there are some genuiley nice people here and the state is very family oriented. When it snows here the roads are only bad the day of the storm or max the day after if its a big one. The wind doesn't blow that bad so a 30deg day feels like a 30deg day. Still seems like a good time to buy a house if you don't have one to sell. If you live here long enough you might draw a limeted entry elk tag and the LE elk areas in UT are some of the best if not THE best. And the snow is pretty awesome and the mountains are close to the city:)
