Moron allert... Phelp's probably destroys his career with this move

your kids have a choice and whether they are influenced by someone else is moot.....so just because there is someone else out there that is good at doing what they do takes out the whole concept of parenting?!

i guess your right, lets blame music, video games, movies and we can add athletes that make bad decisions to that list

I don't know if this was directed to me or not but.... The way I see it is if you have a kid that wants to idolize a pro athlete, then that is a good thing. It doesn't mean you aren't parenting tho. Parents still have to make sure the kid knows why he/she is idolizing that person... If the kid sees this awesome swimmer win 8 gold medals because he busted his a$$ to get to where he's at and the kid wants to be like him, that is awesome. If this kid sees some swimmer win 8 gold medals because all he does all day is smoke weed and party and that makes him a good swimmer, then obviously somebody went wrong in their parenting responsibilities.

And when an athlete makes a bad decision, that is an excellent opportunity for a parent/mentor to make an example of them to their children....

Teaching your kids right from wrong comes from good parenting not an "Idol or an icon"!

Good post Meatman!

Sure it does, never said it didn't. My point is that kids are going to idolize celebrities of some sort. Please, anyone on here tell me you didn't idolize or look up to someone other than your parents or other family members when you were a kid. If these celebrities are going to be making millions off of their artistic or athletic abilities, they should be held to a higher standard. They are all overpaid in my opinion, but it is what it is. For being in the public spotlight all of the time, they should at least be responsible and not be doing stupid chit. What Michael Phelps did was completely inexcusable because of who he is and what he does.

snowfox-

who would pick someone to look up to that they have never met and don't know hardly anything about?

Lots of people.. I don't think it matters if you know them or know hardly anything about them. What matters is they know he is a damn good swimmer. That is what they are idolizing about him. That's all they need to know about him.

How many kids idolized Michael Jordan when they were little?? Millions I bet. Awesome basketball player, awesome businessman... HUGE partier...

What if the guy had a huge drug problem before he even won 8 gold medals? What if we never knew about it? America is driven by gossip and backstabbing, they try to live off any dirt they have on celebrities....It's sickening, I'd look up to Phelps as a great athlete in the pool, what he does personally is his own business.

Hey snow fox,

Who decides this higher standard you are talking about, you?

I think all of us already hold him to a higher standard, we expect him to dive in the pool, swim his arse off, and win more medals with no (performance enhancing) drugs. I truely can't believe you want to "ban" him from the Olympics.

You're so full of it I cant believe it, even coming from a holy roller like you.

Did you start a thread when he got a dui calling for his medals and a ban from the Olympics?? Or is that ok because it's accepted by the millions of Americans, athletes, stars, parrents, kids, teachers and everyone else who has made that mistake before.

Have you had a conversatinon with your kids about Roger Clemens, Baseball and drugs, the baltamore ravens, Pacman Jones, Kobe the rapist, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Rush Limbaugh the druggie, and 10,000 catholic priest rapest????

The bottom line is we are all human and the only Idols your kids should worship is you, your wife and proper family members. Athletes, actors, artists, policians, priests, government, you name it, should all be treated with optimistic skepticism and your kids should be tought that by you.

i think we are splitting hairs on this one but for the wrong reason. what i was trying to get across is that anyone can appreciate an athlete for their performance on the field but that doesn't mean they should want to be like them in every aspect of their own life and that's when parenting comes into the equation. how can someone try to be just like someone else if they don't know anything else about them? michael phelps is an amazing swimmer but that is all he is to me. i don't know much else about him-nothing about his political views, his family values, if he likes to snowmachine, what his favorite color is, coke or pepsi-none of those things. and those are the things that help me make decisions regarding people. okay, maybe not their favorite color or soda stuff but the things that really make up who a person is. and even the issues that i dont agree with, doesn't necessarily make me dislike them. i don't really care that he smoked some pot because i never liked him for the fact that he didn't smoke pot. he's just a good swimmer. probably the best swimmer. but that is all he should be to anyone that doesn't know him personally.

That is exactly what I was saying... you just said it much better.

Good morals and ethics, that's what decides the higher standards that I am talking about. Something that is lacking in this society. Look who just got elected president, an admitted drug user and people IDOLIZE him and drink his kool aid. Yes we are all human and we all should be reponsible for our actions. Phelps used an illegal substance, he should suffer the consequences. It is good to see that the Sheriff is investigating the incident. So you hold him to a higher standard of wanting him to win medals. What is so important about that, does it solve world hunger and inhumane treatment throughout the world.

I may be full of it, you just seem like a waste of good oxygen.

so lets fry him for this and not his DUI? What side of the fence are you yelling from? Is that what you teach your kids?

"son don't smoke pot or drink and drive, wait till the stop signs."

where do you draw the line at, c'mon
