Moron allert... Phelp's probably destroys his career with this move

Althletes are not role models...not in my house.

WTF is an althlete anyway?

He will not lose much, because it is not a big deal,
He could have posed sloshed drunk and it woudn't even be a story.
People love to tear people down, who are more successful then them, it is human nature.

I am sure if you just look at your own lives you will find more fault then taking a bong rip.
So remember this guys still laugh's all the way to the bank.

Why do we expect everyone in the social / public eye to be a perfect pristine human being when so few are not?

Wow he tokes... big fricken deal... he is just a dude... role model... please people..... Athletes are not role models... What and how we think of them is not real, but a human version stripped down of all of our own insecurities...

Since when did we have such a high expectation of human behavior, when on average we are really just a bunch of jerks?

When are parents going to start actually teaching there kids what a real role model is? I guess that will be when they could actually show them by example...

Maybe this rant is because I dislike most sports and sports players anyways, but the American fanaticism with popularity and hero worship just goes too far.... especially when it is mis-directed...

Ahhhh, this hurts to say....but I agree.

Just because you are good at a sport doesn't make you a role model. Does the roll model status just go for athletes, or is it movie stars? Singers? Any body with a large bank account? I'm pretty sure I don't want Little John, Britney Spears, Charlie Sheen, TuPac(when he was alive), Ray Lewis, Ricky Williams or R Kelly watching my kids, or teaching them anything, for that matter. Just because you have the ability to do something great doesn't make you a roll model. Phelps is a great swimmer, but he's also a 23 year old.

i also agree with ruffy here....athletes are not super heros....they work just as hard as anyone else to get where they are.....sometimes harder, doesn't mean they are roll models just because they work towards a goal.

look at a healthy chunk of athletes out there today.... they get complacent and make horrific choices because they put themselves above everyone else.

Who are any of you to judge everyone else based on your standards.

HAHA I'd let Charlie Sheen watch my kids, that 2 and half men show is hilarious :D :beer;

Athletes are role models because some kids choose for them to be. They are all over everything for advertisements. They are the best at their respective jobs, and they get paid very well for it. Its a way for parents to teach their children that they can be anything they want to be. If a kid plays basketball when he/she is little, they are going to want to be like lebron or kobe... If they snowboard, they may want to be like Shaun White. so on and so on.

"Go ask Alice when she's ten feet tall!" Hello, my name is sldgy and I am an athlete and I smoke pot.:face-icon-small-ton:face-icon-small-win

Dont blame the athletes, blame the media. dont report on them. you didnt hear about my 3 killings did you?? :)

but we make it such a big deal!! its are fault. thats why gossip mags and tmz stay making money. who cares about a swimmer doing a bong hit or a singer who walks in a bathroom with no shoes.... I DONT

but i think swimming isnt a sport anyways, as alot of the games they play

If you remember the 60's, you weren't really there. Go ask alice, ten feet tall, flower boa's....nope, does not ring a bell......

I disagree with some of the comments that are referring that it is not a big deal. Go to a elementary or junior high and ask kids about Micheal Phelps. There will be a lot of kids that view him as a role model. In our society athletes, actors, and musicians are viewed as role models. Hell, I started smoking in highschool because I thought it was cool. All of the big acts like Guns N Roses, Poison, Motley Crue all smoked, so why shouldn't I?

People like Michael Phelps should be held to a higher standard because of them being in the spotlight. The way I see it, they chose to be in the position they are in because of there athletic or artistic abilities. If they want to act like idiots then so be it, but they then should not be allowed to make millions upon millions. Basically it comes down to reponsibility for ones actions. I personally hope that he is banned from ever participating in the Olympics again, he sh!t upon many a kids dreams by doing what he did.

ok, so you call him a roll model that has been crucified by the media....they guy won what, 8 gold medals and all the sudden that is out the door....screw that, he is obviously dedicated in doing what he wanted to do.

your kids have a choice and whether they are influenced by someone else is moot.....so just because there is someone else out there that is good at doing what they do takes out the whole concept of parenting?!

i guess your right, lets blame music, video games, movies and we can add athletes that make bad decisions to that list
