I know this probably has been through the ringer a few times, and I know how to do a search. Just curious about fuel mileage differences between the Duramax from 2001 to 2005.

Looking to go diesel and was wondering if the extra $ is worth it or needed between the older and newer ones. Thanks

the 03 we still have outshined the 04 easily by 4-5 mpg on average. Even still, teh records for the last 4 years on the 03 show I've only averaged 15 mpg IIRC

my 05 duramax dually gets 18 mpg highway, 12mpg, towing 24ft enclosed. all average 75-80mph, has edge juice, and 6" lift with 22.5 255 80r kenworth tires and rims

All the dmax's between 2001 and 2004 were the LB7 engines. This engine has the least stock power of any DMAX but, in my opinion it also gets the best mileage. I have a friend who has a LB7 with an edge chip and he consistantly sees 20+ mpg hand calculated.

It seems like every diesel engine differs in mileage; even if it is the same engine generation (LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM). I have a LBZ with a bullydog chip, afe intake, 4" exhaust, boost stick, blocked and fingered, and run royal purple in everything. I also have 32.5" inch tires on 18" wheel and 300 llb grill guard/bumper on the front. My roomate also has a LBZ with a bullydog chip and the exact same things done to his pickup. While I consistantly get 17 - 18 mpg in the summer, he gets 18 - 22. I might have a slightly heavier right foot then him at times, but not enough for a 4 mpg difference.

Bottom line, if you are really concerned about mileage on an older generation duramax, your best bet is to buy one from someone who has kept mileage records from day one. This way you will know what you are getting before you buy it.

Thanks

Thanks, that's the kind of info I was looking for.

02, CC/SB DMax w/ 80k mi on it.
18 mpg at 85mph, 21-22 mpg at 55-60mph
Get 13-14mpg towing a 20' ski boat or my 3place enclosed alum sled trlr.

Another thought

Thanks for the input!!

Was also wondering what major changes have been made through the different series of Duramaxs' that would result in the improved HP. 320HP for later ones compared to 220HP on ealier models?

The LLY (04.5-5) motor is rated to have more power than the LB7 (01-04) but the LB7 sure feels like it has more power. I think some of the emissions crap they put on the LLY hurt it's power.

.

I had an 03 DMAX and GM extended the injector related warranty to 160000km/5yrs. I sold it a while back with 140000km with no issues, it averaged around 15MPG (MT). My Dad still has his 03 and he averages 20MPG (MT). With similiar driving habits and bone stock. Probably has nothing to with it but mine was built in late 03 and his was early 03.

My 2004.5 Dmax LLY has never overheated, not sure if it only effects certain model range or what? I get about 15-16 MPG with mine going 70 MPH. I don't understand either why some get such better MPG than other's. The only complaints I have on mine is that the suspension isn't that great IMO, the broken speedo, and that fuggin' driveshaft yoke that knocks/squeaks like mad whenever I come to a stop or leave from a stop. Overall I like the truck, but before I buy my next one I'm going to take it for a long test drive and hit every pot hole I can find to test the suspension and also see if the newer trucks have the same driveshaft yoke squeak.

Here is my 05 LLY Duramax mpg when empty:

60 mph - 19-23 mpg
65 mph - 18-22 mpg
70 mph - 17-21 mpg
75 mph - 16-19 mpg
80 mph - 14-17 mpg

Once the engine gets over 2000 rpm, then it goes downhill. In town, you can see anywhere from 14 to 19 mpg depending on stop and go, speed, etc.
