McCall Trails, Need a favor

Second year out there. Awesome trails. Keep it up.

Now can you build a hut staffed by sled bunnies and supplying refreshments and gas so we don't have to head back to the truck so early?

Oh yeah, dropped much money this year and already reserved for next year. Don't want any political BS and infighting to hurt my back, knees, and kidneys in the future.

trails

doug,
I usually make several trips to McCall every year but this year I've only been there 4 times and every time the trails were in excellent condition on both sides of brundage and the warren wagon road. Keep up the great work.

thanks

still grooming?

Are you still grooming? Heading to McCall for a job interview next weekend and was wondering if we should bring the sleds. Heard there is tons of snow!

Where would we get Idaho stickers for out of state sledders?

thanks,
Rich

I know trails A-M, which are part of 43A, were only groomed at the most 3 times this season. The posted "grooming shedule" on this website never included Red Ridge, Sunflower Flat, Fish Lake, 4 Corners, etc. Any A-M trails. I don't know how may times people can ride to Sesech or Warren (unless they have cabins there) but it does tend to get boring. I suggest that you come and discover some new play areas on West Mountain (if it ever gets groomed)!

I didn't read all of the posts so I don't know if this was at all mentioned. I'm not familiar with the "map" but I clicked on a link someone had and looked at the trail areas A-M, mentioned above. Anyways all of that sunflower flat, fishlake, four corners, bell sadle, red ridge (etc.) area is now Potlatch owned. Which requires another sticker all together, I'd be interested to know if you (switchback04) are even legal riding on their ground. There is a mix of FS, State, And BLM in the surrounding area but you better know your country to know where that is. I can't wait until they shut all their ground off for no use at all just so dip$hits like you won't be able to run your mouth and use their ground.

I don't know how this land change affects the grooming, maybe they have something worked out already. It is private ground and if they don't want a trail, there won't be a trail. Be aware though, you have to have a permit to even walk on Potlatch land.

On another note The parking lot that I ride out of and the trail system that I use every weekend has been the best it ever has. So I would like to say thank you to all those that have "done work" to get this grooming fixed. In the past it hasn't been the greatest and truthfully I wouldn't buy a sticker until the trails were being groomed (I'll probably get some $hit for that but let it go, its in the past). I didn't have a problem giving them my money this year so thanks Doug but remember he's NOT the only one.

I rode about 20 days in McCall, Donnaly, and Cascade. The trails are the best in the west in my opinion. I just wish Washington State would take a lesson from Idaho. See you next year and the year after that and on and on.

Yup, we are still grooming!!!!!!

This weekend everything was groomed from Donnelley north to Warren (all of the McCall area).

Today it looks like blue bird skies out there. I hope riders today took their snorkels cuz I had to stop twice last night to clear the powder off the air intakes for the Snowcat. 18 inches plus of last night snow on top of a foot earlier this week, and its that cold fluffy crap that plugs everything and makes your sled feel like it weighs about 7 ounces.

For the future this year, we will only be grooming Francis Wallace to Warren/Burgdorf and High Elevation to Goose Lake, Duck Lake, Sater Meadows, Copet Creek. So if you ride out of High Elevation or Francis Wallace you will have at least decent trails. The goal now isn't "great", just "decent" for the weekends.

For sure the comment that it wasn't me is absolutely true. This year there were a BUNCH of folks that all pulled together. Many work for Valley or Adams County or are elected officials for those two counties. I can't go into specifics, but there are a LOT of people quietly making this all work from the counties.

Many thanks to the businesses in the entire area for supporting us with goods, services, support, and most of all MONEY MONEY MONEY.

Thanks for all the help folks. I've printed this all off and will take it to the decision makers.

i was only able to make it down to maccall twice this year, but both times the trails were perfect, it was a sunday both times i made it down too, in past years the trails were always beat up real bad by sunday but this year they were great... keep up the good work!!

Grooming abilities do weigh in on my decesions on where and when to go. Whether some say it or not most people wouldn't go to a spot that has huge amounts of traffic and no grooming. Sorry folks, it's just the facts.

Look at all the hot spots, most of if not all of those areas have groomed trails leading in and out of those locations.

I wonder why does McCall always have problems? It seems every year since I have been a member on this site that we here about grooming problems in that area? I may be out of line here but nothing could be more negative to an area then the constant talk of poor grooming, lack of grooming or just problems with the grooming program in general.

That area seems to need a reworking in the way it handles it all. Maybe a look to neighbooring states and clubs in how they handle it and you never hear a peep about it. The best grooming program is one you never hear of.

The reason we always have the problems is that there are alot of people that just can't seem to be well taken care of enough. If these people would just stop their bit@#ing we would never have these problems. Also if the people that ar bit@#ing would offer up some sort of help to work the areas that THEY like to ride it might make a difference. I have no bitc#@s about the trail grooming this year.
GOOD JOB DOUG AND CREW AND ALSO THANK YOU FOR A VERY PLEASURABLE RIDING YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!:beer;:beer;:beer;:beer;

Interesting information. Perhaps you could inform me as to where this "special sticker" may be obtained???????

The Forest Service (who signs the trails), Idaho Parks & Recreation (that assist with funding) and Valley County have no information about this.

I'm sorry to hear that you support closing off snowmobiling areas.

Iclime, whats wrong with you? Why would you want us to loose riding? I don't get you...

Dang - I was counting on the whoop sections down the trails in years past to get me in shape for dirtbiking this year! ;)

Trails have been great this year around the Brundage and Warren areas, especially in considering all the people that do ride these areas and everywhere in between. The one time I rode Red Ridge this year, it was smooth as a baby's butt (must have rode it after one of those 3 times it was groomed).

Trails

My wife and I had a chance at a free cabin in February so we went to McCall for our first time. We rode tues, wed, and thur. The trails were very good and 2 of the nights as we were going back to the parking lot we met the groomers.
So it appeared to us that they were really trying to get the job done.
The only negative was the parking lot at the end of the Warren road, it was full every day and hard to find a spot for a pickup and 2 place trailor. And yes there were lots of rental people there with big trailors and lots of sleds, but don't get me wrong I have no problem with them making a living too.
We met some people from florida that were renting and had a great time
helping them off a hill they shouldn't have been on.
WE have every intention of coming back because we liked everything about it.
Thanks to anyone who made it a great time for us.

I was in McCall in the middle of february, the trails were awesome, best they've ever been. While the primary focus of my trip wasn't to ride trails, you still have to ride trails to get to a place to jump off, and having the trail to get there be four lane freeway as smooth as glass just make things a bit nicer!

Well Doug I wouldn't say I know less than nothing about what I'm saying. As you can see in the post I mentioned that I didn't know if anything has been worked out with the grooming and keeping of trails on Potlatch land.

"potlatch is letting us ride in mccall areas. does not require a special sticker of any kind here."

I would like you to explain the exact boundaries where they are letting you ride. How is the "mccall area" defined? Why is the "McCall area" exempt.
Edit: I assume you are talking about all of the newly acquired land.

I don't think stickers are being recognized this year as the land transaction between Tim Blixesth (spelling) and Potlatch took place in Dec.-Jan. As you can imagine it would be very hard to mark areas and inform the public. What I mean is it would take quite an amount of time to inform, and I'm sure as they are in transition there is more to worry about than keeping us out of their forest. I'm only talking about this newly acquired land, up north "use stickers" are already required. But make no mistake it will come, I imagine this summer will be the earliest you may see anything. Now for those who don't know this is not a public company. It is in no way related to: FS, State, BLM, etc. It is private ground. And even when it was Boise Cascade owned it was still private land, it was just open to the public.

That said the great thing about Potlatch is it is unlikely they will close the land off completely. They are great because they still let us camp, hunt, fish, get wood, etc. That said, make no mistake that they are in the business of making money (as we all are). They charge for hiking, camping, driving, and even walking. This summer you will see some of the parcels of land that are close to McCall, New Meadows, and Cascade: Being logged completely and prepared for sale in the future.

Switchback04- Your best bet for obtaining inormation would probably be IDL, or the IDFG. Infact if you pick up the current game regulations (I believe it is found on the last page) you will find I website and phone number where more information can be obtained. May have been the fishing regs that I was looking at, I'm not sure that the 08-09 regs are out yet.

Now I'm in no way in favor of closing our public land. But Private is Private and they can do what they want with it. Too many people move hear and become know it all's about everything and everywhere (thats how Switchback04 came off to me).Sorry I don't know you, I'm just saying thats why I reacted the way I did. I'm interested to know if I'm right though. I don't like tourists and I don't want my area and home booming with people as Mr. Miller does. It seems you have pretty grandeous plans for McCall. And to me you seem as if you think you are the greatest thing to happen to the grooming/trail program, in awhile. When there are many that have worked much longer and devoted more time than you have, Doug. I was born and raised here and I absolutely hate seeing whats happening to the place. Its really gone downhill.

Edit: It was wrong for me to say that another sticker is required, I should have said another sticker will be required. The Point I was trying to make is that it is not Public land, in the general sense. (In my above post)

Doug again, you can refer to my above post for a thank you. But next time you better watch your mouth when you tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. Your Bull$hit don't fool me Doug!!!!

When I get another set of regs, I'll try and post a link for some info.

In the past it has not been very good...matter of fact, in past years it was painfull to ride. This year has been excellent with respect to timing it for the masses and staying on top of it..even grooming Sat. nights. You should ride around McCall and then make a call...yes, you are out of line and misinformed for this year...it's been excellent.
