Some one thought it would be fun to burn down the shelter this morning at 6:00 AM. No ones laughing.

Is this really true? Has it burned down? If so that is aweful and I hope the people who did it are caught and fully prosecuted.

News from the FS

It is unfortunately true.

Below is the email I received today from the FS.

Marble Mt. Sno-Park Shelter Burns to Ground

VANCOUVER, WA – The warming shelter at Marble Mountain Sno-Park burned to the ground early Saturday morning. The log structure was about 20 years old. The shelter was popular with snow-machine enthusiasts and other winter recreationists exploring that area of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.

Mount St. Helens Recreation Technician Randy Peterson said he arrived just in time to see the flame-engulfed structure collapse around 7 a.m. He said the shelter is a total loss. The cause is unknown and is now under investigation.

“Fortunately, no one was hurt,” Peterson said. “This was one of the nicest snow shelters in the state. It is a big loss to the Forest and local communities.”

The facility was constructed through a partnership with the State of Washington, snowmobile clubs, local businesses and the Forest Service.

Mount St. Helens personnel have cordoned off the remains of the shelter and it is still smoldering, reported Peterson. Mable Mt. Sno-Park is open. Visitors are asked to stay back from the fire location.

Is it possible that is started with a chimney fire? if it is arson I hope they catch prosecute and hang those responsible. Looked like a very nice cabin

Why would any sledder burn the structure down that may save his own life ?

Only thing that comes to my mind of conspiracy is the enviros trying to make it look like we did it, thus kicking us out of that area and others demonstrating we are irresponsible to police our own, so if not a chimminy fire then it was the enviros.

Just my two cents.

Or someone partying and having a blazing fire, then leaving with it still raging....

shelter burned

the floor of the shelter is concrete and the rest of the shelter was made out of raw uncut old growth logs that don't just catch on fire from a spark or the wood stove most homes would burn alot easier than the shelter, probably vandals

The is BullSH*T!!!

I have been going to St Helens for the past few years and have met some great peeps and made good friends. This is so sad and probably no an accident. I am so unbelievably pissed off right now....

Such a bummer!

Yes, I agree. The last time I was down there it was a big party inside and outside of the cabin on a Saturday night. Snowmobiliers, skiers, snowshoers and climbers camping in tents and in RV's. Alot of cool people from all over the state, having a good time. Food, fireworks, with no BS. Staying there will not be the same for me without the cabin to hangout in!

So what can we do? Start a fund! I'm in, are you? I think I may call the FS today and ask if they can hold it? Or maybe the Cougar store would do it? Any ideas? Whats the club that was involved before?

I was told that the last people seen in the hut were some guys getting drunk. Not sledders or hikers. I will bet that the fire started in the attached wood shed.
