not to be captain jerk, but what were you doing climbing that hill? Looks pretty steep and given the significant snowfall we've received a really bad error in judgement.

friends were playing on it for a bit so i went to get high mark, which i did and bam it let loose.kinda dumb on my part but thats the risk you take when you love to climb

I'm not doing any judging here, I just want to learn a few things. I have a couple questions for you.

Just wondering if you tested the snow pack in the area? What was the general avy advisory for the day? Have you had any avy awareness training?
Is this the first time you have been involved in a avy?

I'm glad you are ok! Thanks for sharing the pictures.

silly risk. more than kinda dumb

So if they went sky diving with no parachutes would you be right behind them?

It's **** like this that will make it easier for the government to begin to regulate our sport more and more. Some people I've talked to think that snowmobilers purposely trigger avalanches for the thrill of running away from them... that's not good for our cause.

Did you read the avalanche bulletin before heading out? The special one for pretty much every region in BC?

And what if my group had been below you on our way somewhere and the avalanche you triggered came down and burried us?

Again not trying to be captain jerk, but use your frickin head! Mistakes happen, but tossing it off as no big deal because you had your ABS isn't really cool.

Crap happens.

All you guys please step down from your soap box and be glad this fellow was OK.
We and I mean ALL of us have climbed hills that in hind sight was stupid so we are all glad you are ok.

abs

glad your o.k. stories like this make people think a little more when their out sledding..we have all made some dumb mistakes.as long as we learn from them..

glad you survived. by the looks of it the backpack did not save you but thats just judging the photos. I dont use an ABS so you are saying I am dumb.

So you have never climbed a steep hill in snow??? STFU! I hate it how every avalanche survior story on here everyone has to get on and tell them how stupid they are. Chiat happens, we ride in the mountains, it's a chance you take, you only way to be safe is sit at home.

How about you take the story, learn from his mistakes, learn from what he did right and better your knowledge before we have to read about your death in the paper.

So you dont like to climb? IMO you need to step off, s*** happens and every one makes mistakes, maybe you should stay in the flat lands and not give avalanche surviors s***.

your an idot.dont come on to my forums and give me ****.i have a wife and parents for that.if ya wanna put someone down go find another forum.thanks to all that are happy im alive, because i to am very happy and will def learn from this

RidinM8 why not tell us what you learnt. And what did you learn from the tragic death of your friend only a month ago.

Why was there more than one rider on the slope? Were you aware of the Special Avalanche warnings for large parts of the province this weekend?

I don't believe people mean to be attacking you, but they are trying to make you realize your mistakes so hopefully you can learn from them. And thanks for posting your story because right or wrong every avalanche has lessons that can be learned from it.

I'm happy you're alive buddy! Don't take it the wrong way,

and for those who are curious, Yeah I do like to climb hills and have fun.

But I also read the avalanche forecast and climb accordingly.

I'm grateful we didn't lose another fellow sledder but just because you're wearing a seatbelt doesn't mean you can drive drunk.

The ABS doesn't give you this roller coaster pass to go around and do whatever you think is fun.

any bulletin out there for this weekend has stressed the weaknesses and instabilities that exist in the entire bc snowpack this year.

I will give people **** if it has the possibility of endangering my life. If I were in the area I or someone I know could have been affected. Think about that when you're out there as well!

Smart move

Ridinm8,

Very glad to near that your ABS bag saved your life. I started riding with one this season and even though I have not had to use it (and hope I never have to) the $1000 was well worth it. Don't let those on this thread that are bashing you upset you. Hopefully, they will never wish one of their friends had one or a member of their family will wish the same about them.

The more of us that ride with them, the more will purchase them.

Glad to see that the bag worked out for you. I use one myself. On a side note, even "experts" that dig pits, and interpret the layers are not immune to getting caught. Case in point; the last avy class that we took, they showed a video taken by a group skiing and boarding in the trees, the hill broke and ultimately killed one guy that was an avy expert, as in PHD and specialized in Avy research. No one is immune, it's never really safe. An avy pack is a smart move. Just be as careful as possible and hopefully you'll never have to deploy it. Be safe....jmho
