maybe just a rummer but i was in mining and diving today and a guy came in and said no more riding in lost lake after the 30th, they are shutting it down for this year (dam tree huggers).you break a branch and they start crying.

Don't get too wound up about Lost Lake just yet. It closes every year on the 30th of april, or as conditions warrent. I will take my hat off to the Seward Ranger District. That group is very good about sliding open and close dates based on real world vs a calender. They have to have a plan in print, I can understand that and the 30th is usually pretty close. But there have been many years that they have extended the season because of the snow pack. They will even shut down Firemans because it is dirt,l but leave Primrose and Snug open. Then shut Primrose when it is dirt, then finally Snug. Snug is the last to lose snow at the trail head. Give them credit guys when they do it right!!!:beer;

Lost Lake was great today. Raining in the parking lot, then sunny by the time we got to the cabin(firemans). It got cloudy then sunny a few times. Overall a great time. The snow was good, about 8"-12" of fresh heavy snow. The trail going in is still in decent shape. Should be good for a week or two. Will post a few pics tomorrow.

Snug was good monday

SNUG GETS A PARKING LOT!

Went in to snug monday, and it was wide open and not a track past Vmax. The snow was a bit wet but better than dirt! There was actually about a foot of powder on the upper bowls and especially on the shady sides. Lots of slab slides on the west faces. So watch yourself. Otherwise 45+ and blue bird all day. Seen two other small groups by afternoon, but other than that had the place to ourselves to make tracks wherever we wanted. There was still a good foot to two feet of snow and lots of ice on the road to rainbow lake so I am hopin they will keep it open for at least another few weeks.

Oh yeah, and there was state peeps up on the road, flagging and surveying for a 50 unit parking lot like the one we proposed to Chucach ten years ago. They said it was gonna happen, Chugach was going to pay to put it in, and keep it plowed. :face-icon-small-hap:beer;:beer;:beer;

THANKS CHUGACH

Wow thats great we have alway left Anchorage real early so that we could get a place to park, Great work and we all thank you for the work and the info.

I cant take all the credit....

I do not recall who actually did the draft and footwork, somebody in the borough planning department it seems, and a few of the die hard sledheads that but anyways, when they had those open forum meetings around the state asking for suggestions and comment. We went to all the meetings to make sure we had a voice against the skiers.... (the only meeting where there was a turnout of sledders was in Soldotna....packed the house) what was a shame was there was (Nobody in Girdwood, ANC, or HOPE to represent the sleds) It was then that they were accepting public comment about "The Plan" and the changes that went into effect Yesterday May 1st 2008, was 10 years in the making...

IMHO "The Plan" SUCKS! It was a DEMAND of the CLINTON ROADLESS INITIATIVE that required all national forests to have a Motorized Vehicle Management Plan, and thats what we got. One benefit to US id that they exclude snowmobiles from MOST of the reg's by calling them "Over the snow vehicles" so yay to thee, and thanks to all who helped us keep a tiny bit of our freedom. The whole thing is intended to herd us outlaws into town and eventually make us all ride the bus and stand in soup lines.
But at least thanks to the Kenai Watershed Forum and a few squaeky wheels we are gonna get a long awaited drop of grease.

Where is Vmax?? I've never been to Lost Lake via Snug Harbor before, but would like to check it out.

Coming from Anc, Snug harbor road is this 1st road on the left past the kenai river crossoing as it comes out of kenai lake. Follow this road until they quit plowing it. If you do, you will see quickly why we are so excited about finally getting a parking lot. Unload there, and follow the road up to rainbow lake. From there, the trail goes across rainbow lake and up into the mountains. Just after getting above treeline You will drop into a canyon, this is know as V-max canyon. From there, you are only limited by visablity and fuel!!!

Ultrarider,

Still confused... Your directions mention Rainbow Lake, but I'm looking at my Alaska Atlas and all I can find is Cooper Lake, Russian Lake, etc. I see a small creek that heads up a gully opposite the south end of Cooper Lake. I also see a couple of creeks (Boulder and Martin) that head towards Lost Lake out of Resurrection Creek, but that seems like a long way around.

hey hampster, is pretty easy to find..as your headed south toward soldotna...you will cross the kenai river at cooper landing..as soon as you cross the kenai...take the first road on the left(snug harbor rd), follow it to the end(its pretty small turn around area) and park so others can still turn around...You will see the trail right off the end of the road....

rainbow lake is about 1 mile before cooper lake on snug harbor road its just a dot on the map. It will be on the left hand side as your heading up the road.
