Lost in hole by iron mine last year

There was a forest ranger on this rescue,we talked about going back in during the summer to fix the hole he told us if we were caught in there on our wheeler we would get fined and loose the wheelers. The ranger said they knew about this hole but did not have enough time or money to go in and fix the problem. The hole is a natural hole in the ground from what we were told by the ranger. Looks like we are going in on sled as soon as possible with a chain saw,we will cut as much dead wood as we can find and cover the hole. We hope the snow will cover it and no one will have the same mishap.

Not the best job but I think it will at least fill in with snow....Most of those trees are 6-8" in diameter so they might even stop an Arctic Cat.:)

we were up there today and threw a few more across the opening. while I think the branches will work for a while, someone ought to drag up a metal grate and just drop it over the top.

I know an iron worker/biz owner that makes awesome fence gates. I will ask him about scrap pieces that could be used.

Covering the hole is a good idea.
However, If warm air is in the hole, you will still get a hole in the winter depending on how deep the snow is... Covered is better, but I can still see someone falling 10 feet + and landing on the sticks.

My buddy fell down 40 feet then went about 10 feet under a ledge,we lowered a flash lite and a radio to him he said in about another 10 feet the ledge dropped off to who knows where. So if you dropped down and was stopped by a grate of some kind I think you should start thinking that some one above is watching out for you. The next person might not be so lucky.

The hole at Sharps Peak over by Monte has been looked at by cave experts,it drops in to one cavern and then to a second cavern and then to a third, it looks like an hour glass. I got this info from an old guy that was raised in the area he had a camp in the La Plata area. His parents had one be for he did, so I kinda think he knows,he also did search and rescue for Weber County. They say you can see China from the bottom.

Just wondering if anyone else got up there to throw some logs in the hole, would hate to see another victim of poor judgement by the Forest Service. I am going up with red danger tape as soon as I can get in. Hope that helps.
