Lost in hole by iron mine last year

I don't know if it is a cave or a mine shaft, people have talked about exploring “caving” these mine shafts/caves in the soapstone area before. I noticed that the air coming out of the shaft was about 50 degrees, thus the warm air keeps the snow from building up over the hole, I figured a pallet with a piece of carpet or something over the top would be sufficient. What do you guys think?
it's only 4-5' in diameter

I'm not even sure I'd put the carpet on the pallet; let the air flow through. Just make it so a sled or person can't slip into the shaft.

I'd take a couple of lenghts' of 2 inch PVC pipe, paint one end orange and stick them in the ground so they stick above snow level so the area is marked as a hazard.

Maybe the USFS doesn't have the time and money or maybe they want to leave it alone for the wildlife habitat aspect...

There are a bunch of those sink holes ( I was going to say "holes", but...) up there around Iron Mine and in the little bowls NE of Cold Spring area. Why they don't do something to fill them in or grate the top is beyond me!

There are some of these same open mine shafts up around Guardsman as well.

Would not be fun driving into one on any vehicle.
