Loss of areas

"Under the Mountain Caribou Recovery Implementation Plan, scientists recommended over one million hectares across the mountain caribou range be closed to motorized winter recreation to facilitate recovery of caribou populations. These closures are now in effect. "

suicide watch???

i havent heard officially but it looks like they took our clubs riding area. all the hard work that has been done to try to come to an access agreament through caribou elevations is gone to waste. fuc%in scientist and goverment.

Thats a lot of area, how much damage are snowmobilers doing to actually doing to the mountian cariboo what scientific evidence do they have. I know for one i if i actually seen them i would just probably shut my sled down and watch or do everything i could not to disturb them. This looks like its directed only at snowmobilers with no mention of logging but i guess we are not to worried about that anymore, its unreal and i wonder if they thought of the cost to actually have these areas patroled or if they even can, seems like a area that size you would probably need canadian forces to come in maybe thats their next deployment. I am sick and tired of certain individuals making all these rules we have to live by. Well as always i will do what i want to do and deal with when the time comes and unless you have a badge don't even go there.

I looked briefly at the closures, and from what I am seeing, it is areas that are not too affected or unforseen to me. I am unsure as to what is north of Mcbride for riding, but I can see it being devastating to the local economies.:(:(Curtis, what do you think??

So....

Is this the case....

Sleds are getting further and further into the backcountry, I.E. Turbos,,,lightweight..etc., that they are just setting boundaries to us sledders, is it for real that the caribou are dying off?? a lot of these areas are not even in areas where active sledding is.

Any opinions..

As for the north areas around Prince George it looks like we will all be jammed in little areas. Did I ever mention that I like crowds:( Looks like all are secret areas are gone:mad:

It definitely affects a few of our groups "secret" riding spots. Funny thing is, in the last couple seasons of riding these spots, we've never even seen a caribou track, much less a living, breathing caribou.

EDIT : Here's something I mentioned to my riding buds. It's quickly coming to a time when we as sledders will have no choice, but to engage in a very large display of civil disobedience. It's becoming painfully obvious that dealing with the loss of riding areas through proper channels is not working. When we as a group decide enough is enough, then it is time to get the word out by mouth, internet, etc. and get as many sledders as possible to descend at the same time on one of the recently closed areas. Makes me wonder how the authorities would deal with 1000+ sleds at one time.

have clubs been contacted or the local feds of this info?

im always curious how snowmobile areas are gettin little to none yet birds can hover and drop heli-skiers off... active logging (nothing against loggers).... transform a face of a mountain (RMR @ revy) with world class snowmobiling in its backyard always gettin hassled about caribou closers

Clubs and their feds or assocs. have been working with gov. on this issue for the past 3 yrs. Scary isn`t it how the skiers don`t loose anything once again and we all take the hit.
There couldn`t have been any caribou on Mt. MacKenzie or that ski hill would have never been developed, right. ;)

was a big part of this area not just granted as a tenure to a heli ski outfit, there are quite a few tenure's held in the closure areas,I am curious how it will affect them.......I am from longworth east of pg ,a little old mill town from the early 1900's and like most small mountain mill towns it has had a locall fire lookout at the top of longworth mountain, well obviously the trail was maintained for years, now with the fruity granola eating yuppies from ???? come to pg join other fruity brain deficient narrow minded do nothing clowns, and these fruitloops from ???? call the forestry and complain people were keeping the trail to the top clear, the guy that was doing it was 3rd generation still out clearing the trail his grandfather had hiked everyday to measure the snowpack during the winter 50 yrs previous, his uncle and father had kept the trail clear after the grandfather couldnt....now these goofy fruitloops come out and tell people how to live in the bush that have lived there for generations.....it is a sad state in society were we are led by the blind, because they have the loudest voice....

If you do not respect these closures, you could be putting the whole area at risk. The local clubs have a stewardship over thses areas and if people do not respect this the whole area could be shut down. The clubs have all worked very hard to keep a % of the areas open for us with countless hours in meetings and volunter work. So if you care about keeping the backcountry open for future use PLEASE RESPECT ALL CARIBOU CLOSURES no matter how unfair it is.

I can not understand where the "anti-snowmobile" parties in government made the leap from discussion papers and Draft snowmobile area maps, to closures? The column headed Approved Objectives/General Wildlife Measures with the documents, listed beside U-7-003 for Upper Fraser and Hart Ranges areas, which is claimed to be the authority, does not talk to anything other than tree farming and road building. How did the MoE people interrupt these documents as the signal to restrict snowmobiling? The other reports listed under U-7-003 are out of date and some of the referenced parties retired.

I understand SARCO has been absorbed by the MoE. Is that why the government people that were going to meet with our club directors decided to short circuit the process? It seems that under MoE authority the government people suddenly had free rein and took advantage of the situation and didn't need to pretend to talk to us anymore.

Despite what is going on with closures, nothing has changed. The caribou populations in our area are stable or increasing, there are no good reasons to make regulation, and wolves continue to kill the caribou. This summer signs of a large wolf pack were spotted at 42 Km on the Pass Lake Road, which is right in the middle of the Hart Range. As a result we expect significant reductions in caribou populations in the next caribou survey. Caribou populations in protected areas, like Wells Gray where snowmobiles have never been allowed, continue to plummet. But at least there are no snowmobiles, and that fact seems to be more important than anything else to the government people we deal with.

There is nothing to be gained in caribou augmentation by rushing into closures and making half the outdoor recreation population of the Prince George area mad as hell, so would you ask the Minister in charge of the MoE to direct the offending parties to suspend the snowmobile closures in our Hart Range area until they meet with us. As long as caribou populations continue to do well the use of "material adverse" under General Wildlife Measures, does not apply.

Our PG club has pointed out many times to many disinterested government people that the snowmobile community is the last best hope for the survival of the caribou by our presence in the mountains. Clearly it is in our best interest to drive the wolves out of our entire area, and not just in a few unrestricted areas. Wolves have always stayed away from snowmobiles, and with a little encouragement by government, the conditions for wolves in our caribou and snowmobile area could get a lot worse. The wolves might move right back in when snowmobiles leave the mountains in the summer, but until then the caribou would be safe.

Please talk to the Minister of the MoE on our behalf, we need someone to be reasonable about what is really going on.

Thank-you

The link on the top shows you alot except anything that is a park. To me it looks like they have closed most areas above a certian elevation. As for kakwa there was a map from a year or two back of all the closers in there so do a search on gov B.C.
