anyone serious about a major camera purchase should look at the Panasonic
HPX170. Yep $5000.
It is the new version of the hvx200. lighter, better image, many many frame rate options, but no tape only P2 cards.
in my opinion this is the best thing out right now for the price range(came out last week)

dam its spensive. I've had my finger on the "add to cart" button for a week now.
Funny thing is i found it $200 cheaper in canada then the USA. thats a first!

I third the recommendation for a good tripod... something with a nice head on it for smooth panning...

I wonder if you could get away with a monopole? monopod?... You could just jam it in the snow a couple of feet and be set... I guess they already make hiking sticks that kind of do that...

Great topic, and good information!

Would be nice to have a good head that could be transfered from mono to a tripoid. I looked at an expensive Fluid head, seemed pretty forgiving, but bulky, might be worth the sacrifice tho.

I had a skull cam with a 40g hard drive on it. Very nice quality and hours of recording his resoulution. They are bout a 1000 bux. or at least was when I bought one with all the options.

For anyone looking at the HPX here is a great article to wet the tongue ! This is going to be a great cam. It will be my next cam for sure unless the Red Scarlet comes down in price LOL !

sold on the "hpx170". just gotta roll my nickels, dimes, and quarters, sell and appendage and return some empties.
dam! The hpx will def bring the price of used hvx down so there may be a great opportunity there.

I want scarlet too but they just announced scarlet is being redesigned and won't be out till fall of 09.
Time enough to buy the hpx170 for this winter then sell next winter for the scarlet.
a bit camera crazy right now.

3CCD is your friend. Look for the logo on the cam. It's a must for filming action in the snow as some previous people have said.

For under $600 you can pick up a Panasonic 3CCD. Thats what me and the boys use over at Oneshot Productions to make most of our movies. Quality comes out pretty good, it's miniDV, 1394 for dumping vid, and they tend to be pretty resilient to some of the effects of filming in the PacNW (32 and snowing constantly). Plus at $600 if you bail with in your pack and it toasts, just buy another.

Chief Filmer just picked up a Canon HV20 for this year, very pocket sized, Flash card media, I'm anxious to see the results this year. Might be going the route alone just due to the battery power, HD, and flash media. Awesome combo for sledding. Plus being pockets sized means you can quickly just pull it out of your jacket to catch your buddy before he gets his sled unstuck. :face-icon-small-ton

One quality feature for making sled movies that I never thought about till after I had a bunch of cams was Time Lapse. Time Lapse makes really killer filler, and filler can make your movie when your actors suck. ;)

Here's the current Oneshot Productions Arsenal:

Canon GL-1
Canon HV20
Panasonic GL-120
Panasonic GL-250
Sony TRV-900

All our cams are relatively cheap cause we're dirtbags that don't take ourselves very serious. Anyone know some good cheap camera repair in the Seattle area? Both my GL-1 and TRV-900 need some help. PM me if you got a guy.

We just got the Sanyo Xacti E2. It is a waterproof for 60 min in up to 5' of water. It has a card drive so with a 8 HCSD card you can get up 10 hours of video. You can also take killer still shots right from your video. Got it at Best Buy and I really love it!!!:D

I bought the HPX170 and 32gb P2 card. Been using it for almost a month now, still like the Canon XH-A1 better. crisper sharper images and longer record time. The Canon is very adjustable ( micro adjustable ) and costs about half as much as the Panny. I like some other options on the Panasonic more than the Canon, but for the most part, best bang for the buck is still the Canon. They will both compliment each other in their own way, no regrets here.

Veedy,

Nice, i would love to get my hands on one ! How much for the 32 P2 ? I think it will be time to retire the DVX this year and get into the true HD world. Check out Call Box:

http://www.callboxlive.com/store/panasonic-workflow-with-final-hvx200-p-33.html

Its run by Noah Kadner and he is the man when it comes to workflow for these HD cameras. I bought one of his DVDs for 24p and the DVX workflow and it really makes your work even better, lots of great tips and info to get the most out of your cam/workflow.

You will have to post some reel from that bad boy ! Enjoy !
