Looking for better MPG-Cummins

He wants to save his tranny. The smarty is not the answere. The smarty is an auto tranny killer. You are right on par with what you should be getting mpg wise. Banks products are safe but dont do a damn thing. If I were you put a good afe intake on with an exhaust of your choice and then a edge comp box and you will be good. If you want you can add a better valve body now to your tranny and it will shift better and prolon tranny failure. I would also get guages because if you plan on towing a trailer in the mountains with any sort of chip your egts will start to get a little warm. Also when towing if you want good mpg dont drive 70 mph. Do 60-65 and you will get much better mpg with the lower revs.

no ones talked about 12valves because he wants help with the mileage on his 24 valve

humm maybe he wants to do a p-pump conversion. thats about 4g or so......can make really good power.
might want to upgrade that trans first though before you go for the 1000+ hp mark. :p

Only problem I had with the edge, and I ran the juice/attitude and the ez on my 04.5 is they ran a lot hotter egt's than any other chip I've run. The smarty at a lower level I never once came upon tranny issues and it was a stock tranny. Gauges are a must when adding any hp over 65 on these cummins engines and I agree keeping your speed under 70 helps fuel mileage drastically with the cummins.

the 48re's can handle a lot more power than a 47re can in stock form.

I just bought a 02 24vHo 6speed and my mileage is horrible. When driving at 50mph on cruise i get 14mpg i average around 13mpg on a tank. Is there anything i can do to fix this problem? I've been looking into programers but like one guy said they only help 1-2mpg. I know my truck has been on its side before but i dont beleve it was running. Anyone have any good theorys for mpg?

I would go with the Smarty it is hands down the best programmer for the cummins engine and it runs probably the coolest egt's over any other programmer I have had installed. I never had any problems with my tranny and I ran the Jr. and the Sr. in my 04.5 600 Cummins.

x2...

Yeah i really noticed the highway mileage difference getting above 18-1900 rpm lol, i did 85 for a while and by the time i got into town i used A LOT of fuel lol.

I would get a edge ez you can find them for 100 to 150 used and I have friends with them with no problems. The transmissions and fuel pumps are weak on these trucks and dont like the added power without upgraded parts.

It warmed up here and driving it easier intowns proving to me that it isnt that bad on gas, just needs more lowend snap. So should i upgrade the fuel pump and lift pump? Also, can i get away with not buying a 1200 stall convertor and still handle 500-600lb tq, with a valve body upgrade in the trans ofcourse? Found a set of injectors and im pretty set on running the edge juice or adrenaline, not on too high of settings ofcourse, just like the functionality of them both, especially the turbo timer on the quad. Thinkin it should run half decent with these parts, pick up that slow bottom end. Lemme hear your opinions

Not to get off topic,

I guess I'm lucky ,my 06 gets 18-19 mountian driving, 17ish with a trailer(small).

I have found anything over 6o seems to effect the mileage

Didnt the older 24V motors need the valves adjusted every 50ish K. Knew a guy that pulled a camper, he claimed after the valve adjustment after 50k he got 5MPG better. Maybe his engine finally broke in !

the trans will go something like this .....if your nice to it you can add some power and be fine....watch temps towing and when you feel/see the tc slip(rpm flare when in lock up) fix it, dont just think it will be ok.
but if you leave the stock tc you will eventually smoke the tc clutch and send the clutch materal into the trans and that will be time for a rebuild. the vb will increase line pressure and help the tc cluch hold better...all the cluthes will benefit from increase in line pressure. if you go with the vb and tc the next weak link will be clutches most likely the second gear band and strut will bend and the band will slide.. then the direct clutch ....it just the fix one thing and go to the next weak link.
its really how you drive the truck and what you do with it.....lock to lock shifts and boost launches and you could kill that trans in one day easy with the power you have now.
some guys do get away with adding lots of power and abuse but also get a new truck every year....so much for the next guy...right.

as far as the fuel pump goes upgrade the lift pump....or get a gauge. dont let the fp pressure go below 5 psi or it will kill the vp...also you dont need a fancy fass or air dog ect just put the stupid pump by the tank so it pushes not pulls the fuel..gl392 walbro and a regulator and you will never go dry it will support 600+ hp even the stock carter will last a long time if mounted by the tank.

as far as injectors go some will actually make worse mpg and egt's that the stock turbo wont control. stick with the stockers the edge with the pump tap will be more than the stock turbo will like.

Why would i want one with 55,000 miles when i can have one with 200000?? lol

Well sounds like the converter gets replaced. Damn, gotta build a trans for my truck and my mach 1.. Pay to play i guess. Thanks for all the helpful tips Roberyoke, new to diesel power so trying to get feel for things.

24 valve

I bought my 98 Cummins with 34K on it. Auto, no chip.

Put the Edge on it and got exactly 10% more mpg. Up to 17.5 at 65mph. Never use readout to get accurate mileage numbers. I literally "ate" 3 complete tranny's before 100K and 4 TQ's. All warranty and I sold the truck before the warranty was up.

I tow a car trailer with my EB on it. 8 1/2' camper also.

I bought my Duramax for the Allison trans. What a difference...night and day.

Id look into Edge Products, buddy. good friend of mine has the same truck and the Edge programmer and the exhaust woke the truck up! and gets better mileage too

I'm suprised no one has even talked about the old 12v, I,ve got a 97 12v 5spd. Intake/Exsaust #10 fuel plate, DDP injectors, Hex Turbo, South Bend 13" Con O, PortedHead with Arp studs. 4.10 gears with 35" tires Dyno #'s Rwhp-416 Torque-910ft
In my truck the best mpg Ive got is 19.7 at 71 mph with truck unloaded. With about
12k on the rear the best I get is about 12.8 at 68 mph. I think the manual trans trucks do seem to get better milage. Just my .02

The best truck ever made... I miss my 97.

Bang for the buck they are hard to beat! You can find them now cheap. But if you can stay away from the auto's. The rattle, make alot of noise, even leak a little. But they run forever, make good power, and the insurance is cheap!
