Looking for better MPG-Cummins

Iv got a 98 24 valve, all im interested in is getting better gas mileage, What programmer/chip can i buy for this? Iv read the advertisments, want real world numbers, thanks guys

I have a 2001 24 valve cummins and installed the Edge EZ programmer in mine. To be honest I did not gain as much as I hoped. Maybe 1 to 2 mpg better under perfect conditions. I noticed more of a mid range torque gain then anything.

milage

Lots to learn the milage tricks for the cummins engine you have.I started and owned three diff diesel performance companies.I sold them to go into research on H2 and fuel milage.I've built quite a few products for various engines and had good results. The products were the only products to date that where tested by ISO approved government facility. These products are for a publicly traded company. Not tring to sell you anything, but before you buy something let me know and i've probably tested it before.I don't sell anything anymore to the public but will help you find something that actually works.

got a superchips on my 1999 and even with big tires i can still pull 20 mpg at 60-65mph. cold air intake and exhaust with a small chip should get you over that 20 mark. depends on whatelse is done to in though...

My 04.5 never did get better mileage with a Juice with Attitude. I will be installing a PDR cam this summer along with somehow losing my cat or muffler. I would be really interested in what doc has to say. H2 enriched diesel might be fun.

Thanks guys, Its got the auto and 265s on it. Nothing major pretty much stock. I understand i wont be getting massive improvements but i figured a good mileage chip, exhaust and maybe a banks intake if i even use one. Doc, ill PM you after work!

It was drove up the Alcan from Oregon to AK with a boat and fourwheeler, dad did the math and said about 16 mpg average. Not sure how accurate it is, but i know drivin conservative with a 2 place and 4 sleds, went 170miles on a quarter tank

Thanks for the opinions so far. Billy

my 98 isb never got the mpg my 03 gets, i put the 275 hp rv motor injectors and gained a little, tst power max added some when towing because i never shifted out of overdrive. some guys like the smarty but never tried it on the isb i do really like it on the isbe (03 motor) but i doubt you will ever re-coop the cost of a fueling box, set of injectors or turbo ect. in the fuel you save.....so just drive it!
unless you want the performance then just get what makes power and just lie like the others on here about how good the mileage is they get.

I got worse mileage with my edge comp in my 98.5, but I also left a puff of smoke at every corner and rodded it more because it actually had some power. I had 285 tires on mine, and I got 14 city, 17 hwy driving under 2000 rpms. If nothing else, the chip makes it so much more fun to drive because it dont feel like the parking brake is on all the time. lol

14 city is more what im lookin for. The reason i say im lookin for efficiency over power is purely because im not ready to drop the coin for transmission parts, yet.. How much additional power can i throw at it? 80? It has 200000 miles also lol, but NO OIL LEAKS! Thats why i keep driving it..

I own a 98 24v and an 06 common rail. The 24v has an exhaust, air intake and the 65hp chip edge makes. city mpg's on it is probably around 15. The common rail is all stock and according to the display, city mpg's on it is around 17 to 18. At 65 mph, driving like a mature adult, i probably get 21 out of both

dont get a smarty then...that will be death to your 47re......and 80 rwhp ...yea that will kill it too. 40~50 max it not the hp that kills its the torque and 50 hp is usually 100 ft lbs
stock 98.5 isb's were 235/460 with the hand shaker and 180/420 for the auto's so dodge knew it would not handle just 40 more ft lbs.
if the power has been stock and the trans has not been abused then adding a good valve body may prolong the life of the trans......but if its been overheated and the seals are hard the increase in line pressure might just blow seals.

On my 1998.5, bought it with 90,000 miles, first 15000 after that ran edge ez (65 horse) and next 55,000 I ran an edge comp with the pump wire tapped (120 extra horse at the wheels/350 ft/lb) without problems. I have 160,000 miles on it now with no problems, so I guess some people have better luck than others

This summer i planned to rebuild the trans with a better converter and valve body so when i did start tweaking, it wouldnt give me hell. Figured might as well dump cash into the trans while im already dumping cash in the trans lol.. typical male thinking.

Has anybody tried the Banks Econ module? When i get a day off ima try and chat with some diesel shops around town, if there are any, see what they think also.

I would go with the Smarty it is hands down the best programmer for the cummins engine and it runs probably the coolest egt's over any other programmer I have had installed. I never had any problems with my tranny and I ran the Jr. and the Sr. in my 04.5 600 Cummins.

smarty for sure, edge ez was my best chip i had on mine, intake, exhust, and most inportant thing is to keep ur foot out of it. stacking 2 chips helps very well, but watch out for too much timing! injectors are another great fuel milage increase

banks stuff is good but you pay more ($$) and get less (rwhp)

I'm suprised no one has even talked about the old 12v, I,ve got a 97 12v 5spd. Intake/Exsaust #10 fuel plate, DDP injectors, Hex Turbo, South Bend 13" Con O, PortedHead with Arp studs. 4.10 gears with 35" tires Dyno #'s Rwhp-416 Torque-910ft
In my truck the best mpg Ive got is 19.7 at 71 mph with truck unloaded. With about
12k on the rear the best I get is about 12.8 at 68 mph. I think the manual trans trucks do seem to get better milage. Just my .02
