Looking at buying a Pro

Been out of sledding for about 4 years and looking at buying a sled. I'm looking at a 12 and 13 pro maybe a 14. I would like to buy new but I can't justify paying that kind of price for a sled. SoTwo questions for you guys. What is the most miles you would buy a used pro with? And the other question is. I'm a big guy. 6'3" and 300 with gear on so with that. How are these holding up to big guy abuse. Most of the riding with be around North Dakota with a couple trips to the mountains a year. Thanks for your input.

I know you said you didn't want to buy new. Just hear me out. I see your in ND.

Heried SD has a new 15 163. I think it's listed for 8500$. That's not a lot more than a 13-14. 15's run the best out of them too. I would seriously consider that.

If that doesn't work I would go 13-14. They have a lot of nice upgrades.
 
Every year they got better for engine reliability and performance. Buy the newest one you can afford.
Your going to want to upgrade to heavy rear springs at the very least. I would also suggest adding an extra cross shaft in the rear skid to help prevent bending rails. Eric
 
I'm 6'4" and prob 260 geared up. my '12 Pro has been good for me, but needs suspension work for my weight I feel. I'm actually just getting around to that now, as they were good enough.

Overall, the mileage and condition will be dependent on how the sled was ridden and taken care of. Some guys can beat a sled to death in a year...

I have been fairly picky with my sled but haven't gotten much riding in. At 1350 miles, I figured I'd go thru the top end as my warranty expired. No major damage that I can see, but the rings are flaked pretty bad.

Just find a good clean one that hasn't been neglected, and maybe plan on doing a top end, if you have any engine concerns.
 
If you want to keep it a while, find a less expensive, higher mile 2012 and have an Indy Dan motor built for it. You would end up with similar money into it as that new '15 but I bet the ID motor lasts longer than the new stocker.


Otherwise, I never kept a Pro past 1300 miles. Plan on a top end by 1500 if it has been ridden hard in the mountains.


New ones at $8500 sound good but by the time you get it away from the dealer I bet you will spend nearly $10k. There are tons of low mile used ones with warranties out there for a REAL $7500-8000 OTD price. I had great luck with my '13, dealer issues with my '14 but it never let me down. '13-15 motors are better than 11-12.

Good info from the guys so far.

I'm 6' 1" and am about 250 geared up. I've had a 12 and now a 14 for one more season. Both sleds were good but my 14 is a tick better in a few different areas. My suggestion would be to buy as new as possible, just to get all the "little" refinements as possible. Not that the 12's were bad but the 14 and 15 model Pro's are basically the best Pro's that were put out.

I assume your looking for a 163"? At your weight, no offense, I would look to the longer track for riding out west. You'll just be happier in general. If you looking to ride in marginal snow (ND), I would look to upgrade the thermostat to the bypass kit, to assist with keeping it cool. Also at your weight, I would look at possibly getting the heavier rear track shock spring, just to assist with getting the rear suspension dialed in.
 
I'm biased, but my '15 snow check standard RMK 163 has the best of both worlds, a long track with the front cooler. Might look for one if that interests you. Ought to be some for sale out there.

I'm probably 255-260 with gear on. I got the upgraded WE clicker shocks and swapped the springs for the Zbroz dual rate ones and they tailored the spring rates for my weight. Spring kit for all 4 shocks was only ~$300 and they helped out huge.

A lot of great info guys. I really appreciate it. It will be my first Polaris so new to them. I will be calling around tomorrow to see what's out there.

Look into Polaris wheel kits I think they are around $50/set. I had two 2011's, now have a 2013 and a 2014. All 800's. Had one bad exhaust temp sensor. That's it. The 2013 is closing in on 3000 miles. They are not good for trail riding. If you are more into trail riding I would research an assault.
 
Buying used or carryover, unless budget is an issue, I'd target a 14 or 15. Best maps, most hardened motors (cylinder skirts, pistons), with less 13 pro driveshaft, glued a-arm, map, carbon overstructure issues. FWIW. My 14 was just a better running sled than my 11 was stock, and the 11 was good stock.
