Live on Rabbit Ears

wss

Hoopers,
I believe that my brother and I rode up on you guys while you were parked in some trees taking a break. We were both on black RMKs, one older one newer. Was that you? I thought I recognized you but it was after we were further back in there. That was the LAST place we expected to see someone!

Yea WSS, that was us! We were thinking the same thing...could not believe we saw somebody back there. After we saw you, we ended up going back to fishcreek from there, and then found another route south. Kept going south over 4-5 ridge lines....We got into the crosscountry ski area by mistake too:(....by the time we realized it, we ran into some park rangers...they were actually pretty nice guys, and we felt reaaly bad about it....Moral of the story is, you need to know where you are at! Sometimes its tough when you are in the trees. back in the trees, there are no signs....They were very understanding....park rangers ride some pretty old heavy sleds, and we were all joking about how they need Obama stimulus to buy new sleds!:beer; They said they can only buy small cc sleds, because the newbie park rangers dont know how to ride.:D

WSS, weren't you the fellow from Gunnison? Are you up north now? Or maybe we just rode with you in CB.
I lose track of all the folks I've ridden with over the years....too much:beer;, I suppose. I've hooked up with a fivesome, and we pretty much ride every weekend somewhere. We used to do a lot of weekend trips, but some of the group have young babies, so not so much anymore.

ski area boundary

here is a rough draft of where the ski boundary is, I drew it on my topo program by hand so it's not perfect but close enough to keep you out of trouble, it's the thick black line running from the highway NW along the east side of Mt Werner...copy it to your desktop and then you can magnify

Thanks snowmark. Good to know where that Xcountry boundry is....looks like you can get real close to Mt Warner (which we did), but anywhere south of there, its a nogo.

I've flirted with that boundary a time or two. lol I think it was you Dave, who had to reel me in down on the south side when I blasted by one of those tiny signs. We got into it a few drainages north of the tower once as well. Riding some remote ridge and dropped into a drainage behind the lines. Saw ski tracks all over as we headed back east which gave us an un-easy feeling...and then the sign about a quarter mile up. They only sign the creek bottoms and some ridge tops worth a chit, so it's not hard to get behind the signs. They do follow a natural escarpment (big drop) of sorts up north, that keeps most out of there.

Trails illustrated map has the boundary on it, though Mark's is close enough. Kind of a rush when you pop up on that hill and the tower is 300 yards away! The actual mapped boundary (signs can be off, and often are) runs just a few hundred feet below (east) of the tower on the same hill it sits on though.

Looks like the storm shifted enough south so the SoCoCrew is staying in SoCo

Have a great weekend all and be safe out there!

Yeah, those skinny skiers keep moving the signs every year. I have literally watched entire play areas move within the skier boundary in a single season.
