Life Flight is a blessing

Hope he's doing well now! Thank goodness you had the insurance! I've had to be life flighted off the mountain too when I was teeny bopper and the bill was certainly a shock to my mother! The injury is hard enough to deal with then come the medical expenses.... make it easier on yourself with life flight insurance!

He loves all the support he is getting. His third surgery is over and they don't think they will have to do the last one. Yeah!

I got a look at the part of the tree that came out of him today, it is incredible anyone could survive a spear that size. Thanks again all. It is looking good for him.

Thats great news. Get well soon! Like I say "If you do the sport you always run the risk of injuries. Its not a matter of if, its when and how bad." Our family has the life flight membership.

Greetings Nate,

Great news for your Dad, as well as your Family!

The critical care you provided your Dad was essential to his recovery.

You maintained your poise, focusing on stabilizing your Dad and providing Lat. and Long. directions to Life Flight via your cell phone.

I'm sure your Dad is proud of the Son he has raised to become a Man.

I salute you Nate!

Craig.

Just heard about this, I think i watched you two ride right past us on the way up.(you guys were on ski-doos right) We were the group on the back side with a bunch of edges and a dragon.

I wondered where you went and saw life flight go over on the way back, never put the two together. If I would have known we could have been of some help.

We wish him a speedy recovery.

Some family friends have set up a benefit for my dad:

Here is what they pulled out of Dave: (Not for weak stomachs.):

JET FUEL - I did want to chase your group down, but I couldn't leave him there bleeding. It is nice to know we had more support available. :)

IDAHDOO - We do use Cabarton. Tripod and Snowbank are excellent. Just watch for avys and spear shaped trees.

Thank you all. I believe everyones prayers have helped make his recovery go as well as it has.

Thats scary stuff, but I'm glad to hear everything is going good. I guess that membership is one of the best things you never hope to use. Definitely makes me rethink not having it. Anyways hope everything keeps going good and your dad makes a fast recovery.

what a picture

That picture is amazing, there is no way a man could ride out of backcountry with that embedded in their body. Personally I have never given a service like Lifeflight a thought but after reading this thread and the info on the website-thanks for the link who pasted it-I think I will spend the money for it. I am pretty new to snowmobiling but have been a long time backcountry snowboarder and mountain biker. It seems like their service applies to summertime sports as well.

I am glad to hear your dad is doing well and I hope he continues to snowmobile after recovering.

Best of luck to your Dad. Thanks for posting the info on Lifeflight, does anyone suppose that they carry the application on the helicopter, maybe you could just fill it out and hand them a check for $50 before they load you up? ...no didn't think so..;)

Nate,

I am sorry to hear about your father's accident. I hope that he enjoys a full and quick recovery.

I encourage everyone to also consider buying a SPOT. It combines satellite technology with instant location identification. The unit is $150 ($50 rebate may be available) and it costs $100 a year for the service. For an extra $7 a year you can get $100,000 insurance for search & rescue, extraction costs, air ambulance, etc. costs. It works anywhere that you have an open view of the sky. In this regard, it is much better than a cell phone. It also allows you to send OK messages to whoever you designate (cell phone and computer) with your exact coordinates and google map location (on the computer). Another function allows you to request non emergency help from whoever you have entered in to the system to receive your OK and Help messages. Finally, it has a 911 button that will immedately alert emergency services that you need emergency help. It povides them an exact location as to where you are. A pretty damn cheap lifesaver and equipment saver IMO.

I do hope that this story helps people prepare better for a ride. And its like like Bob said, buy a SPOT. Especially if you ride areas without cell coverage. We made the investment for areas like the White Clouds.

Pass that photo on to those who think they don't need technology to save their life in the backcountry.
