Lance Armstong - best athlete ever?

If you ever rode a bike for 50-100 miles you would understand a little more why Lance and all the tour athletes are so amazing. They are more like machines than people. Definitely he (Lance) is the greatest athlete of all time. There are many sports that take an incredible amount of technical skill and I agree with one of the posts above recognizing that those skills are in themselves worth mentioning among top athletes. But to be able to do what Lance does every day and recover and do it again is simply amazing. Some of the grades of those hills in the tour are 13% grades and they are holding speeds of 12-20 mph on those slopes and they do it for hundreds of miles a day! Then do it again the next day! Simply amazing.

again it's not just Lance riding and putting up the times....he has guys that specialize in hills, etc. Not taking away from what he does...but again it's not just him earning those titles and times.

For the most part this is true, BUT there is not a tour that goes by the Lance does not dominate in both the time trials AND in the mountain stages. He does rely on his team but no more than MJ did with Scottie Pippen.

Most over-rated Bosworth, Tony Mandarich, Lawrence Phillips, Ryan Leaf, and Ty Tryon.

You really dont understand cycling do you? Look at this year you have no one really pulling for Lance because 3 of the riders on the Astana team are in the hunt for the GC title. Do you think they are pulling and doing the work for one another? IT does help them at times to have good riders on the team but when it comes to overall GC score only one or two team times count for the GC all others are based on individual times. What teams do help with is controlling break aways and what is going on in the pelaton. BUT, If you think the winner is based on other riders times you are wrong. The simple fact of the tour is these guys tax their bodies to the max for day's on it. They know their body better then any athelete that compete's in a competition that only lasts a few hours. Why do they? because they have to be able to fuel up and keep their body working at that capacity for days and days. Not just for a few hours.

+1

Teams help, but none of the guys on the team can do what lance can.

Word.

I don't get into these best athlete ever conversations....they get annoying. All I can say Armstrong is definitely a stud! Go Lance! ....and Chubby, hell ya about Stockton! What a stud! I miss him! Sunridge and I were at the game when they retired his jersey.

.

How could ever possibly pick a "greatest athlete of all time?" Maybe in each sport, but all together, NFW!
I don't think anyone has ever busted their a** changing and revolutionizing a sport as much as Matt Hoffman. Broken everybone is his body.... 30+ concussions, risking his life everytime he steps on his bike. Did a 900 in a halfpipe 11 years before tonyhawk did it. Double backflips in the late 80's.... The guy is an absoulte maniac, that will never be topped.
Also, what about Ricky Carmicheal...?? how can people mention Bubba, when Ricky was kickin his a** for years. 2 undefeated seasons in a row?? UNDEFEATED.... 11 world titles...
Picking one person out of ALL sports is absurd. Then how can you compare someone who risks their life everytime they do their "sport" to Tiger? Ya, hes one helluva golfer, but he'll never break his neck golfing

I agree with some of what you are saying, but I don't think that being willing to break bones or risk your life makes you an outstanding athlete. There is much more to it than that. In fact, I would consider the guys that can do that kind of stuff without breaking bones regularly much superior athletes.

if they're going to do it fair and properly, there should be a few different categories.... Like best endurance athlete, best extreme sports athlete, etc, etc.

Its too bad Stockton Is a d!ldo. His cabin is close to mine. Most unfriendly guy I have met.

"Athlete" means something different to everyone, so no way is everyone going to agree on who would be greatest of all time.

Lance is amazing though:
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/07/0722_050722_armstrong.html

His oversized heart can beat over 200 times a minute and thus pump an extraordinarily large volume of blood and oxygen to his legs. His VO2 max—the maximum amount of oxygen his lungs can take in, an important measurement for an endurance athlete—is extremely high.

It has been suggested that Armstrong lost weight from the cancer, making him a leaner (and better) cyclist. But Armstrong's weight eight months after his chemotherapy was the same as before his cancer treatment, according to Coyle. However, surviving cancer almost certainly made Armstrong a stronger athlete mentally. Sports scientists agree that Armstrong is one of the most disciplined and focused athletes in the world.

I read Lance Armstrongs' first book, "It's Not About the Bike", and I'm not a huge cycling fanatic. I've a triathlon and that's work..let alone elevation changes etc that those cyclists have to endure. He's definitely amazing, I'm more amazed though at his ability to come back from an illness..to say as an "underdog" and do as well as he has. That to me, is more amazing than winning another title, etc. I think its impossible to pick a "greatest athlete of all time", be it in the motorsport world or otherwise. I praise any athlete, famous or not, to come back from an injury/illness and succeed.:cool::beer;
