Hey guys. I need a new coat and seems like Klim is the most popular. My question is is the valdez worth the $420 priced tag for what seems like just a shell, and why? Any info would be great. I want the best, but that seems like a lot of money for such a thin coat.

Yes.

I didn't like the idea of spending that much $$$ on my jacket, but yeah, it's totally worth it.

Warm & dry. Two good things on the mountain. Hard to beat their warranty too.

I have a klim pullover and love it but i also have an hmk stealth jacket very nice and not as much i think the hmk is every bit of the jacket the klim is. The Stealth that is the lower end hmk stuff i dont feel is as good but the stealth jacket is very very nice. might check it out anyway. my .02

Thanks LRB, I'll check out the hmk stuff, I have their boots, but haven't seen their coats. I tried on a valdez today, and it was so light I couldn't see it keeping you warm, are they really that good? If a coat that light could keep you warm then I could probably justify the cost! thanks for the 2 cents

Quality speaks for itself.

I own a pair of Klim tog bibs, I paid over 400$ for them, they are like new after 4 seasons. Dry and warm.

A friend of mine who went for the 199$(unnamed) set, is on his second pair of pants. He had wet gear every time we rode in the deep chit.

Guess I will see if it is gonna pay off. I think it will because...

Look at my first line.;)

Valdez is basically a shell. you have to wear thin layers.. I use a microfleece , then a vented jersey, and I am good to go. If it is colder than that, I wear a thicker fleece, and I can go to minus 30...
It works. I was in -30C weather, deep snow, working hard, sweating a lot. I was warm and dry.

The Valdez is designed with layering in mind so it is just a shell only, I don't like that as much so I got the Tomohawk or whatever it's called, don't hafta layer and that keeps me flat toasty with just a regular t shirt on underneath:D:D

And it's a lot cheaper by comparison too... strange

klim

Sent my coat in for warranty and bibs in for repair, they sent me back both warrantied. 5yr garantied to keep you dry. not vary many companies that will stand behind what they say these days. KLIM well worth it ;):beer;:beer;

YES no question the best gear available

The Valdez has been completely redesigned this year. They have gone to a comfort mapping system. They have done this with extensive studies involving where heat loss occurs around your core. And how you will most likely get cold or hot. What they came up with is a 3 layer system. All laminated together for maximum benefit. Some thin insulated materials are used in key areas for warmth, where others will have Gore-Tex closer to the body for maximum moisture dispersion. The jacket is a close to "climate control" as you will get.
Another feature of the Valdez is that it utilizes Gore-Tex Pro Shell. In a nutshell (hey it's the holidays) This is 25% more durable and 25% more breathable in that it will disperse moisture more quickly.
These jackets are intended to be layered, but with this technology you will be amazed at how well they function with just a light layer. I've ridden in -20F with last years version with only the thin Aggressor moisture wicking layer. People just won't believe how comfortable you stay until they experience it. In extreme cold you may add the inferno or Everest layer.
I was comparing product at the store yesterday. I was absolutely shocked at what I was finding. We also sell FXR gear and discount it. I couldn't believe that when comparing the 2 that the Klim in many cases was less expensive or within a few $ of each other. I can't understand why this would be. Who wouldn't spend $5 more for the top of the line Gore-Tex Glove? Sorry, just couldn't see how they can have a jacket more expensive than the Tomahawk with less quality and no Gore-Tex. I wanted to add also that if the price is getting you, this years Tomahawk is almost a spitting image of last years Valdez with standard Gore-Tex.
Hope that helped.
Happy Holidays

Kilm is the only way to go. The jackets are nice and thin to let you move around and that way you dont feel all bunched up. You definatley get what you pay for. I will never wear any brand again. A dry butt goes a long way
good luck

what size do you wear? I have a used one from last year i am selling! Will save you a bunch of money (not on car insurance!!! :o)

I love my Klim. As a female rider that rides both on and off trail, it is the only thing that has kept me warm and not sweating during a full day of riding. I have the base, mid and outer layers top and bottom, and I would not wear anything else.

What everybody else said is true. Well worth the money IMO!

even the dry butt part? you sick bastage!!!!

Man I think when it's time for any new gear I'm driving up to pay Monte a visit....that guy really knows his stuff.

Thanks, I just know I need a vacation. I hope people find the info useful. I'm happy to help when I can.
Happy Holidays to you and yours.

wow.. I know it good stuff but, ski doo makes some pretty kick *** shells and pants that are only a fraction of the price. Very water proof and mine has held up just as good as Klim wear that everyone seems to have. I have a pair of Klim gloves and they stay pretty dry.. I love them..
