Kent teachers suck!

I'm no teacher....know a few. IMO Teachers are some of the most underpayed people there are....although this strike has nothing to do with pay.
The future of our society revolves around how our kids are raised and unfortunatly most parents don't spend enought time with or instill the qualities like most older people were raised with. That leaves more burdon on the teachers and to keep the best teachers you have to pay them more then the garbage man (no offense to garbage men). Their job is not easy and they can have a HUGE impact on YOUR kids future. Can kids be expected to look up to a teacher driving a POS car and making 30-40K? They should all make 6 digits IMHO....to keep them teaching and to attract more talent into that occupation. Not just people looking for a summer break. JMO- :beer;

Well put Winterbrew, Do you think that the superintendent of the Kent school district should make more than the Governor ( I know I didn't vote for her either) or the Vice President of the USA. He can give his wages back to the teachers who earn it. Back to the voting booth

Im surprised that no one has brought up the Boeing machinist strike..That certainly was not the time for such action..
That worked out great for them.. I think they sold there jobs to S Carolina.. or whatever god forsaken state Boeing is ramping up to move too..right along with all the local shops that will be hurt..

I think when you say the teachers suck for trying to get smaller class sizes is stupid, they are not asking for more pay from what I understand. maybe send your kids to a private school see how that works out for ya

Ya right, Obviously you don't know a damn thing about the strike but way to chime in!

They are asking for a 10% raise in a down economy when we have a $10 billion deficit and education is 60% of the budget, unemployment is around 18%. You must have flunked math. And before you try and tell me unemployment is 9.2% you have to remember that that is the number DRAWING UNEMPLOYMENT CHECKS ONLY.

It costs 3 million to reduce class size by 1 kid state wide.

The state has offered Kent an $8 million dollar raise.

If it's about class size then they should take the 8 billion and reduce class size by 3 kids state wide or way more in the Kent school district. Basic math!

I would love to send my kids to private school and not pay for public but I have no choice as a home owner.

ya I don't know anymore then the 5 minutes I watch on the news. I will go back to playing my Banjo with winter brew:D

So all of your teachers at Issaquah deserve 6 figures because ALL of them were so great?? Do you really want Mr Swanson raising your kids? Seriously? I went to school with you and I already know the answer to that.

Do you have kids in the public school system above 6th grade? Anyone can teach grade school WB.

I think we should pay the good ones big time!! The problem is that more and more of them are there just to draw a paycheck.

BTW - I can tell from your spelling that you got about as much as I did out of the public school system but I have spell check. LOL:beer;:beer;:beer;

EXACTLY!! If teacher pay was much higher and the job more prestigious, it would attract more/different people into that field....people with more education that are currently attracted to M-soft, Boeing etc....people that would never consider teaching because of the lower pay. This gives the districts a better choice of who they hire and allows them to keep ONLY those that can show results and connect with students.
Ahhhh....good old SWANNY!! LOL
I ALWAYS make sure I vote for schools levy's.....we can pay now for better education or pay later in the form of more jails, more jobs offloaded due to more educated workforce in other countries, more homelessness and social programs. :beer;:)

Oh, and I don't believe I had any spelling errors in my post.

If we make all of them smart and high tech, how are we going to generate a workforce(cheap/uneducated) that can make cheap clothes and other goods to compete with China for sale at WalMart?

Seriously any one can teach grade school????????

A kid grows up in a house with only his mom and brothers and sisters. Mom is on drugs and doesn't give a chit. Kid needs special ed but mom says no. So this kid is in with every other kid, half of whose parents do not speak English. Obviously a troubled kid. The teacher has to deal with this kid constantly as well as trying to educate the rest of the class and dealing with each kid on a personal basis with all of thier personal problems. Why? because school is the only attention some of these kids get. Right or wrong that is the way it is.

Kids who the only meal they get is school breakfast and lunch. Kids who show up to participate in an afterschool program and the teacher has to wait around for an hour after the program is over because the kids parents "forgot" about him.

all that along with dealing with the state assesment tests and other BS

I do not think "anyone" can teach grade school.

ANYONE WHO THINKS A PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER DOES NOT DESERVE A RAISE IS BLIND!!

And the fact that the Kent teachers are asking for a raise AND smaller class sizes is okay in my book.

My children were in Marysville SD during their very long strike... my son graduated HS in July. Did it suck? yep. Was I pizzed at the teachers? no. Our school board at the time was to blame.

I've been in the classroom as a volunteer - there is NO WAY IN HE!! those teachers are being properly compensated. And to those of you b!tchen about the strike - have you spent time in a classroom lately? And do you have ANY idea how much time these teachers spend outside of the classroom??? Maybe your children are perfect and well-behaved, and you can't possibly understand why a teacher should make more $$ to teach them - if so, you are lucky.... cuz you are a minority!

So,

Anyone can teach?? And "more and more are there to collect a paycheck"???

And thats why these people went to college and got degrees so they could collect a paycheck??? What did you go to school for Eric?? And lets pay you the salary that teachers get and reduce your benefits every year and see if you dont ***** about it!!

Teachers are the most underpaid "professionals" the world has!!

Im just sayin......:)

Ericbigbore that was a pretty bold statement saying "anyone can teach grade school." I strongly disagree with you there. IMHO it takes a special kind of person to teach the little guys the basic knowledge it takes for them to succeed at a higher level of education. Elementary is the foundation for all of us, and just throwing "anyone" in there could end up hurting our youth in the long run...

To wb and big truck and the others who defend teachers. Here Here!!!!!!! To Eric, you obviousley have a few issues with teachers. If you think teachers have it so easy go back to school get a degree and become a teacher. I know for sure your view will change Till then shut up. I am married to a teacher who has 8 years of college, paid for by me and her. She has a Bachelors in Elementary ed and a masters in Special Ed, and every year has to do continuing ed to maintain her license for teaching of which 90% of the cost comes out of her pocket. Most private sector training to their workforce is paid by employers. Eric you say teachers have summers off paid B U L L S H I T. Teachers get paid for their contracted work days. There is no pay for Christmas or thanksgiving or 3 months in the summer. They only get paid for the days in the classroom. When school is over in the spring most teachers spend the next week picking up their rooms and putting stuff away getting the room ready for the janitors to do what they do during the summer. Then continuing ed starts. My wife if she is lucky gets 3 to 4 weeks off in the summer that is not school related but 1 of those weeks is spent doing VBS. Yes she is still teaching. And now summer is over and about a week and a half before school is to start she is back at school without pay preparing her classroom for the first day of school. Come on Eric do you really think that those classrooms look like that out of magic? Now school starts. Mind you Eric and all the bad mouthers out there. Teachers have a contract that says they are to work a certain number of hours per day and a certain number of days per school year. I beleive my wifes contracted hours are 7 hours and 45 minuets. She usually leaves the house at 650 and never gets home before 5 and always has a bag full of **** to do in her arms after dinner. Last night she was at school till 8pm for open house. Guess what? no pay. That is over a 12 hour day and is paid for a little less than 8 by contract but is required to be there by the district. Like I said she has as many years of college ed as most Doctors but gets paid a fraction of what doctors do. She has taught for over twenty years and gets a fairly good wage only because of her years and her masters. She does this because she loves to teach but every year I see the light in her eyes and the enthusiasm she once had for teaching grow a little dimmer. This is because of people like you Eric because people like you happen to be parents that she has to deal with everyday. Thank God there are way more positive parents than there are ones like you Eric. People like you Eric are also why good teachers that have been in the system for 2 or 3 years get the hell out of teaching and go into other things because they can make way more money doing other things and don't have to put up with the crap that teachers have to. Think it is so easy? try it. You wouldn't last a day. By the way. Does the place you work have to keep all their doors locked and have Police in the halls or Security people on site? Thats another chapter and I am sure I have said way to much and have pissed off a lot of people so I am done for now. And don't even bring up all the mispelled words because I am not a teacher and I really can spell I just type like **** and miss a lot of letters. One more thing. My wife teaches second grade and every year she gets High School and College Graduation invites from former students she had. Now that is what I call making an impression!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IF YOU CAN READ THIS, THANK A TEACHER. THEY CARED ENOUGH TO TRY AND MAKE A DIFFERANCE IN YOUR LIFE>

Who's ready to go out on strike and demand money from the rest of the people that are out of work or happy to have a job...for now....

I don't think Eric is demeaning teachers in general. I think and agree that now is a BAD time.

While the rest of us have little to no security in the private sector, the public sector workers are demanding more. No one says teachers make too much money or don't deserve more, but not right now. No one is saying teaching isn't long hard work, but no one is saying that teachers are making a decent living with decent benefits. Everyone continues to identify how they are underpaid and under appreciated, not that they do have a pretty decent schedule and pay scale as compared to the rest of the middle income working world.

The teachers should get back to work and do this game when times are better. Heck, I've lost over 80% of my income in the last year and have very little security...I'm ready to take my degree and go get a teaching job. It'd be less hours and about the same pay at this point...plus some security in a GUARANTEED 180 days of work by law, which turns out to be about the same pay scale as some one that works 240+ days a year on average.

I appreciate the good teachers I had and loathe the lazy and crappy humans that tought me also that couldn't be fired because of the union. But thankfully I had more good one's than bad ones. The challenges that teachers have as far as behaviour, strike about that. Don't teach another kid until a parent or guardian shows up to meet and participate in each childs development. There's a good reason to strike!!

I also appreciate the teachers my kids have and think they deserve more for the commitment and effort and caring they give my boys, but if they where to strike right now, I'd be on the other corner telling them to get to work! I'm losing my house and I'm not in the position to give them more money right now. I feel for the parents that are getting stuck by the public employees in their neighborhood. Too bad some couldn't be fired and too bad they couldn't lose some money over not going to work. They will lose nothing in pay, just respect.

Thanks dog.... I'm just to dang tired to type it all out. Well said.

Appreciate teachers...very grateful to many. But the timing is wrong. Again, well said.

see the fustration from kids parents in this one as well, really f*cks with your schedule...work, school, baby sitters and ect....

time and place for everything...bad timing both on the economy side and they have had all summer to raise their voices on this one....but they wait till the last minute...and really end up taling it out on the kids they teach.....setting great examples for their kids..."throw a fit till you get what you want and if done at the worst timing you will get results faster...yeah great example from the teachers...they could have learned that one from my 3 year old..:)

Dont take me wrong....I think teachers should be viewed as doctors. After all they are the ones who lead the way and even teach the doctor that may be cutting you open. With behavior like this they are not setting a good example....or getting my respect.

Bottomline they are keeping the kids out of school, when this could have been work out slowly over the course of the summer....
