Just out of curiosity

Been reading a bit of stuff about turbos and superchargers, trying to talk the wife into one or the other for my Apex MTX. But cost is obviously an issue (I am in canada) we mostly boondock at about 2-3000 ft. Mainly I am wondering why turbos are the preferred method of boosting, when a supercharger is the less expensive system, and can be installed by yourself instead of a shop? I also dont know for sure what a turbo system costs installed. Basically just comparing the 2 systems cost wise. Thanks for any input.

a turbo can be installed by yourself as well, just need to have some mechanical ability. I prefer turbo because of more top end power (superchargers will just fall flat) i also perfer the turbo due to driveability, a super charged sled will wanna rocket off when you touch the throttle, where as the turbo will drive like a stock sled at slow speeds and in the trees i can feather the throttle and i got the power on tap when i need it, Where as when i try boondocking with the supercharger the power is there right away and i usually find myself just spinning down the track too much and trenching instead of carving through the trees more smoothly. Also turbos have a better history of having better fueling systems, not saying the supercharge setups are bad or as a reason to say away from them, both setups have their places.

I have been riding an 06 SC apex for 3 years...80%+ of our riding is boondocking and trees where the supercharger excells in my opinion. The power is instant, predictable and extremely manageble. They climb well too but as the turbo guys have said...they go a little flat on top relative to a turbo.

I ride with 2 SC guys and a turbo guy....I think they would all agree with this.

i have the same opinion.iI personally thought the sc boondocks better as the turbo takes a while to spool then when it hits it trenches worse than the sc.on the big end the turbo definitly pulls longer. but on either one you better be pointed straight when its up and climbing cause stuff comes at ya pretty fast. both have the wow factor cant go wrong either way..

Exactly the type of responses I was looking for. I am not a huge hill climber, I do like to play on them though, so I dont really think I need the top end power that the turbos have. Thanks again.

Rode both turbo and sc machines set at 180hp and in my opinion the sc was way more fun. Very responsive and fun in the trees and meadows but like others said probably didn't hang with the turbo on a long straight climb but on a hill that required some turning and on and off the throttle it did better. If you want the big 250+ hp go with the turbo, otherwise the sc in my opinion is more fun. :face-icon-small-hap

I have a supercharger and love it. I think i will drop a turbo in my other nytro and have the best of both worlds.:face-icon-small-hap

I get about 6-7mpg depending on the day and how deep the snow is with my SC.

Dont think a Super Charger is an easy install. No you dont have to mess with the exhaust or modify much on the sled but its a big under taking to install one. Ive done a SC apex and Turbo Nytro and the Apex install took almost 3 times longer.

Fuel milage on the SC is bad, I have ran out of fuel with 58.6 miles on the tank and there was maybe a quart of fuel left so thats right at 6mpg. I dumpped in exactly 2 gals of gas and TRAIL rode with steady throttle and made it 22 miles before running out again. So thats 11mpg in the best conditions.

Tuned and clutched perfect with a bypass valve dialed in you might get 7-8 mpg on a average day. Good deep powder and I would think your going to be in a 5-6 mpg range. Eric

Just got my turbo nytro this year, has it out for about 3 road rides and I have averaged about 5.8 mpg.

Oh no, dont get me wrong, I know there is a lot to installing them, but like anything good instructions and dont hurry or take shortcuts. Also a lot of knowledge on this site will help.
