June 26 - Bald Mtn tragedy

Had the wife and kids up on hwy 150 today to see the snow depth, roadcuts and even ride some sleds (the plastic no motor kind).

Ambulance arrives and life flight lands shortly after. Apparently three sledders, one died after a cliff fall, body transported via ambulance. One injured and life flighted out, not sure on the 3rd. This is all the details I have and not sure exactly where they were - Watson area I'd guess, but not sure based on the direction life flight came from.

Sad deal to lose one of our own in JUNE, basically JULY! Anyone know more details?? Heart goes out to those that didn't have a loved one come home today.:brokenheart:

today

... about 3PM / 3:30PM was when the ambulance and air bus came in.

Sad for sure!

We were up there riding today. We offered to go out and help and giving the first responders a ride out to it. They were there waiting for S&R to show up and bring sleds to ride out to the scene. They said thanks but we need our own transportation.

Not sure the name of the place where it happened. We went out did our ride with one close call of our own! Thankfully it turn out good.

When we came back to the trucks the S&R was there with the guys that were there on scene and his friends. Sad! I stop on my way passed and talked to the guy that I know was with the injured/deceased. I put my hand on his shoulder and asked him if his friend had made it. He broke into tears and said NO. I gave him a hug and teared up myself telling him I was sorry. I said can I ask what happened? He told me in tears that he was stuck up on a slope and his friend made a climb up to get close to help. The snow conditions were a little weird and the friend side hilled and did not make it to where he was shooting for. He went down at some rocks and hit the first band of rock at speed and went over the bars as he dropped off a 20-30 foot cliff. He had broken his neck on the first impact and was likely dead before he fell the other 20-30 feet. They tried to revive him with no sign of life at any time. The Life Flight came in two hours later to extract the body as the friends and S&R worked on getting the wrecked sled out and back to the trucks. I don't remember the deceased guys name sorry, he was 53 years old and his friend said he died doing what he loved and wouldn't have want to go any other way.

I told the friend that I was sorry again and offered a few words of encouragement. Walking away teared up and bummed out. SAD DEAL.

So sad!! I absolutely hate hearing about these things. Thoughts and prayers are with the family..

ughhhh... what a sad deal. I posted some pics up top of life flight coming in and landing. This was right at the bald mtn pass overlook.

So very sad to hear and breaks my heart. There was an older guy up there in a red cadillac, by his actions I'm thinking he might be the father of the deceased rider. VERY SAD.

Hug em tight whenever you can boys(and girls). I know I will, you never know when the man upstairs might call you home.

Prayers go out to those hurting tonight. I can't imagine....

Sad day for sure. If you guys / gals go out for a ride this week, be careful! We don't need to hear any more stories like this one. Prayers going out to those involved.

Climbing on Baldy Saturday I was shocked at how fast the snow was and how hard it was to maintain control on descents.....Sad for sure that this tragedy happened over the weekend.

Damn.......That's horrible.:face-icon-small-sad

I feel so bad for the friends and family. I went to my mothers 80th b-day yesterday and feel so blessed that she is still alive.

Snowmobiler dies in Unitas
Riverton man's snowmobile went off a cliff

Mark Horsley, 51, of Riverton, Utah, died Sunday in a snowmobile accident on Bald Mountain in the Uinta Mountains near Kamas.

According to Rockport State Park Manager Joe Donnell, a group of six individuals were snowmobiling in the area when a member of the group's snowmobile became stuck around 2:30 p.m. Horsley went to help and was unable to stop his snowmobile while traveling downhill, driving off a 30-foot cliff. Members of the group were able to call 911 and give an approximate location despite spotty cell phone service. Horsley was pronounced dead on the scene when the search and rescue helicopter arrived.

Horsley was taken to the trailhead along State Road 150 in Kamas where he was then transported to the Summit County Search and Rescue building.

"Had the hillside been powder, Horsley probably would have been able to stop his snowmobile," said Donnell. "There is still about five feet of snow up there I think this is the latest snowmobile fatality we've ever had."

Not what I really wanted to be reading about on a June 27th afternoon. So sad. Condolences to his family and friends. RIP
