Its a done deal....time to chime in

I don't have enough facts to chime in on the whole Boeing vs union debate but I do have some questions that have come to mind with the last few comments. For those of you who are Union members, do you vote the party line? To the point do you vote for Dem's because thats what your leadership tells you? I know many faithful union workers and just don't understand the forces at work here. They are for the most part as conservative as I, hunt, fish, own guns, take part in camping and motorsports and yet when the time comes to vote I believe the union card trumps their conservative blood. I know alot of union money goes in that direction and that would piss me off if my dues were spent in a way that would be against my beliefs.

The next generation in what state/country exactly? Not trying to be a smart ***, it just seems to me that the Unions constant demand / expectation of higher wages / better benefits has played a large part of Boeings decision to go elsewhere....

Exactly. No matter how "skilled" and "valuable" we think we are, we are only worth what we can be replaced for....and IMO we are real close to finding that price.
They (IAM) like to quote the huge executive bunuses and record profits at contract time.....that's irrelevant. That's why they are in biz.....to make a profit and we should be happy when they make huge profits because that means security for the worker. Does the union ever tell us we need to take a pay cut when business is bad, we are losing orders and laying people off??? It can't work both ways.:beer;

The Boeing Company is not in business to build airplanes. They are in business to make money for their share holders. I have worked there for 23 years and all the company owes me are the benefits and pay that I agree to work for. They owe me no more than that and no less than that. If at any point I don't like what they are doing I have the option to quit.

Seems pretty straight forward to me.

sheesh - I go away for a week......

....No increase in medical, dental, optical, or any other benefit was given even on the offer that was accepted, in fact I pay 200% more out of pocket for medical now than I did prior to the new contract
So.... 200% of very small is still very small - consider this - my daughter's husband pays so much for medical insurance for him, my daughter and their two children, that when he took a week off when their last son was born, his paycheck was not enough to pay the insurance premium! And their out-of-pocket portion of their medical is ridiculous! (BTW - he is the sus chef at a high fallutin' restaraunt in Seattle....)

......Down and dirty, straight to the point...The company HAD TO HAVE US OUT OF THE FACILITY FOR AT LEAST 6 WEEKS..... rather than pay us to wait weeks for parts and then get penalized out the kazoo by the airlines for late deliveries...
agreed.... not sure they needed 6 weeks, but yes, a strike was to some degree advantageous to the Boeing Company

....Do some research into the real negotiations that occurred then, and over the past few months and you'll see the Union is not the first place you should be pointing the finger at...
again, agreed. There are MANY reasons why the Boeing Company has not been able to deliver as promised on their current new and derivative airplane programs

....Another plain simple and irrefutable fact...
There is ZERO room for additional parking of employee vehicles at the Everett facility for the additional employees that would staff the second line and the county will not allow Boeing to create even one more parking stall...period.
We are at maximum capacity now.
The factory is NOT at maximum capacity now - 2nd and 3rd shifts are only skeleton shifts - there is plenty more capacity. Now, the question I don't know the answer to, would increasing 2nd and 3rd shift increase capacity enough to cover a second 787 line?

Get informed people, that's all anyone can ask....

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 28, 2009

Statement of District President Tom Wroblewski in Response to Second 787 Line Announcement

if this is how you stay informed, I think you've reinforced many folk's point on blind union support.....

Aw whats the use...
Flame away, I can take it.
just trying to present another opinion, from a fellow Boeing, non-IAM but SPEEA, employee.

It's funny - I had lunch with an engineering consultant from Charleston, who made the statement that Boeing is late on the 787 because of the union strikes - so yes, the media does NOT accurately reflect the facts... and yes, I did set him straight.... we then progressed to discussing our respective fantasy football teams - LOL!

The problem is not just with B its the American way of thinking----they dont look at what is good for the company in 2 years or 5 or 10 they look what is going on in the next quarter and no further.

As a buisness owner in Washington its hard as hell and the taxes omg:eek:

Karen, I'll respond to a couple of your points...

What can I say? Your son in law needs to get a better job! :D
Don't begrudge me because I saw fit to get on at Boeing 23 plus years ago for the benefits.
They are more important to me than higher wages.

The parking lot where the Manufacturing people parked is at capacity on first shift...period
Second shift is at 85% capacity
Third shift IS mostly empty...Would you suggest that all the building on the second 787 line be done on third shift?

I know this because being in the factory leadership Safety Council I was involved in a parking study prior to the revamping of all the stall moving that was done recently.
SnoCo and Muckilteo will not authorize one more stall...We had to reduce what we had.
I do more than just build the A/P and act as Shop Steward.

Your very insulting crack about blind Union Support was just that.
Read my other posts and tell me I tow the Union Line...That was just dumb Karen.
Do you get all your views from Doug Kight's press release? I doubt it...You're smarter than that.
I'm trying to bring an opposing viewpoint to all the biased media reports that are flying around

Thanks for setting your buddy straight.
Our recent strike was not what drove Boeing out with their second line any more than it was caused by your most recent, record breaking strike (speea) a few years back.

Third shift.

Build Snow Hawks in the empty work areas.

Skip fourth and go into overdrive, BRP makes aeroplanes too, only the average person does not care!

The East coast will never want to take over production of what they can't understand.:)

My momma always said..."self inflicted pain deserves no pity"....both the state and the union will have to feel the pain to realize business is about the numbers...period. Another great phrase I recently came across...."is the juice worth the squeeze?"....I guess that also could apply for the business decisions of Boeing. Entitlement is earned, you can't say they owe you anything, yet you must say you owe them a hard days work as you agreed to, after that you have to make yourself competative like the rest of the free market world. You guys have been protected for so long you don't know what's happening in the world around you.

To say.."they should get a better job" is IMO very rude. So you made a decision to go and work for the "lazy B" 23 years ago, good for ya. It doesn't make you any better of a person to be able to look down on anyone. Fact is the same thing is happening to folks that have those "better" jobs. Insurance is out of control. The governments business climate in Wa is out of control and the workforce is creating their own problems in claiming entitlement to something they have no right to claim. Besides, who's going to cook for you when you take your lady out to dinner? should that person not have the ability to care for his child if it's sick and also be able to pay the rent....from the opinion I get from you...you'll be cooking for yourself.

No question the union has had it's day and was very needed, but just like the gov't programs...at some point you have to say enough is enough and give back or stop the attacks. If we see "real" abuse of a worker then bring it back, until then, the union is just another business taking money from the people it's suppose to be protecting..and now they have lost them their jobs.

do you have any idea the education, both formal and apprentice-type, required to become a chef? This is a restaraunt most people cannot even afford to eat at.... We're not talking a cook at the local Buzz Inn.... That was the most short-sighted comment I've seen in a while....

where's my "ignore" button....... ???????

Your right.

Just personal jets, subway and rail cars too!

Honda is got one in the works too, I guess since none of you guys have seen one it don't exhist?

Your thinking of Bombardier.....which became a totally seperate company when the rec.veh. division was sold off many years ago.....hence the new name.....BRP. :beer;:)
By the way.....what does this have to do with this thread??? I can't believe I am even responding.

Side note: I just heard on squawk box today that the Ford Motor Co. made a profit! Great news to me! Go Ford. In the same story it was said that the Ford UAW members are considering a strike!

So let me get this straight.......we have the owners of GM (UAW members) trying to force their competition (Ford) to pay higher costs?! What a crock of ****. Great timing to boot huh
