Is There Snow in the Snowies - CK This Out

Snow is decent, not great, YET!

Have to agree with lookin4snow. We've been up the last two weekends, and the snow is ok. Not great yet, but ok. If you get off the trails and look for it in some of meadows, it's not too bad. But it's still thin enough that you have to watch for rocks and stumps. The open trails are marked pretty well, but some are not marked yet because there isn't enough snow to hold the stakes. We went partway up the O trail last weekend and turned around because it was so thin. We talked to a guy yesterday who is on the trail committee and he said the O and NO are too thin to even mark them yet. If you go up on the east side, you can ride the highway over to the west and then find some decent places to play. If you go up on the west side, you've got decent snow to start off. Overall, it's decent for early season snow. The last week (and especially yesterday) has been really windy, so watch for thin spots and stay away from windblown areas, and you'll take your sled home in one piece! Hopefully after Christmas the wind will die down and the powder will start piling up. :D

This thread was Started for those of you that don't think there is snow in the snowy's, if that is what you think then post somewhere else because there is plenty!!
"Snow is Decent, not great", HA!!
The great snow is only hard to find if stay with in .25 miles of the trail.
Do some bondocking and you'll be waist deep all day.
I've ridin Revy and the conditions can be similar with very little effort..
We were doing vertical descents with snow coming over the handle bars..
Not Great, Give me a break!!
Don't want to start an argument here. But if you can't fine GREAT snow then you are either Lazy or afraid to go looking.
Merry Christmas!!

You obviously haven't riden the snowies much.
The snow that is there is "ok" by snowies standards.
It may be great by what you are used to.
Is there pockets of good snow, yep.
However, by this time last year we had already had over 120 inches of snow on the west side and over 100 inches on the east side. There was no concern about rocks or stumps anywhere.
I have been going to the snowies for 35 years and riding sleds there for 8 years. The snow is ok, not great by any means.

I took a quick look at SNOTEL to see what it is showing (not the best measure from year to year, but does offer up a comparison - note that this is for SNOW WATER EQUIVALENT)

Brooklyn Lake is just now catching up to last year, it has been behind for the last month or so. Still behind the 30 year average as Ollie pointed out.

Same with Sand Lake. Just now catching up to last year, and below average.

French Creek tells a little better story - nearly the same pattern as last year, and near average. Guys have been posting stories of good snow on that side of the mountain for a month now.

Cinnabar is trending above average, and it showed way above average last year. My theory on this one is that it is downstream from a cloud seeding station :)

The snowpack numbers tell a similar story, the west side of the mountain at about 90% (rough # by looking at a few of the stations) and the east side is at ~75% of average.

Dang Ollie, you about kill me every time with your reports!! Keep em flowin...:D Heck, I live here and I've only been up the mountain four times this year because I don't wanna fix nuttin...(yea, call me chicken, but i've got $$ for a new sled next year if I wait). There are plenty of places to find snow and have fun, but like Ollie said, standards are set pretty high for ppl that frequent the Snowies, and right now it's just "ok". Myself, I'm waitin for "AWESOME"!!
(and trust me, I'm waiting very impatiently...) Have fun, enjoy, be safe!!:D:D

If everything is working (and it was when we tried it in October) we should have internet this year on the hill. If I can I will post conditions and snowfall amounts a few times while we are up there (27th-3rd).

Sorry, I will make no promises for pictures :) We're up there to relax and since my job requires me to stare at a laptop for long hours, my idea of relaxing is not to crack open a computer.......

Don't get me wrong.
There is plenty of snow to play in.
Especially on the west side of the mountain.
I went tree running last saturday. There is enough to get out and play, but you still need to watch it. Found some fantastic snow in small pockets (managed to get good and stuck once).
I typically ride out of Albany, snow amounts are close to what you find out of greenrock, but not as good as say, north french creek.

Ollie, I wont disagree with you with what you have said. I've been riding there for 5 years now and I make a trip every year 1st or 2nd week of Dec.
There is great snow and in the 5 years that I have been going I have always found good snow, you just have to look for it. You gave me one of your spots 3 years ago and every time I hit it, it is fresh and deep. It is 150 yards off the trail behind a thick tree line. No one goes there because they can't see it. All the guys complaining that there isn't enough snow don't look for it and as I stated, it isn't hard to find, Yes, its not Revy, but there is plenty of over the hood snow out there, We found it!!

Well said, Ollie! Sorry if people don't like our posts, but at least we're honest. And we're local, so we would be the ones to know! The snow just isn't there yet.

I just hope it's enough to be worth the trip, I am gonna be there tomorrow and saturday :o

well, their calling for anywhere from 8 - 24" of snow (depending on what part of the mountain your on) by saturday morning. Sounds like we are finally getting the good dumping we need.

We got at least 6 inches overnight in Centennial. Finally a real snow storm!! It's supposed to keep up all day. See you all on the mountain.

The keystone cam didn't look to bad this morning. Maybe 6 or 8 new inches. It made me feel bad for not going today.

I am still trying to decide if the new snow is worth fighting the outragous crowds that are going to be up there this weekend. Parking is going to be ....................................... interesting.

I think the flat landers pretty much invade over the christmas/new years week.
