Drive careful, we have freezing drizzle up here near Fergus Falls. You can use this link to check the road conditions on I-94 at Rothsay.

from the avalanche report:

AVALANCHE WARNING

:eek:The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center has issued a Backcountry Avalanche Warning for the southern Gallatin and southern Madison Ranges, the Lionhead area near West Yellowstone, the mountains around Cooke City and the Washburn Range in northern Yellowstone National Park. Significant amounts of wind driven snow on Wednesday and Thursday was deposited on an extremely weak snowpack. A HIGH avalanche danger exists on all slopes. Natural and human triggered avalanches are likely. Avalanche terrain including avalanche runout zones should be avoided.

Since Wednesday morning, December 23, 1-2 feet of new snow accumulated in the mountains around West Yellowstone and Cooke City. The amount of snow water equivalence added to the snowpack during this period was 1 to 2 inches. Strong southwesterly ridgetop winds readily blew this snow onto the lee side of ridges and gullies. This was deposited on a snowpack that has layers of weak snow surrounding an ice crust now buried 3-4 feet deep. Earlier this week these layers produced collapsing and cracking of the snowpack and human and naturally released avalanches. Avalanches also fractured on soft snow underlying recently formed wind slabs. The combination of new, wind blown snow being added to a weak snowpack has created dangerous avalanche conditions. Today a :eek:HIGH avalanche danger :eek:exists on all slopes. Avalanche terrain and avalanche runout zones should be avoided

BE CAREFUL!!!!!!

Girlfriend is a 1st time MTN rider

So, i've wanted to bring the girlfriend riding and she would prefer the trail (hopefully that will change) so I thought west would be good as i can still do a little playing in the trees... Now the trail is over the hood deep:D:D:D We are leaving tonight to hit the slopes for a few days then ring in the new year in west. I've been checking the weather like every 5 minutes for the past month (she's ready for the trip to be over already, as she thinks i'm nuts:rolleyes:). last night I got out the backpack and make sure all items are ready, i pull the shovel out and she asks, why do you carry that? i tell her she will be in love w/ it by 2009:face-icon-small-win This trip is all about her having a good time, if i do it right..... I'll have to break in a new saddle for next year:D

Can't wait to hit the pow pow! Everyone travel safe and be AWARE of the conditions!!!!

Today was our break in day, getting stuff back in shape for the year and all I can say is WOW!!! Powder was 3 feet deep, not much for a bottom but who cares it was an awesome day. We spent our entire day within 100 yards from the trail and had a blast. Great weather, great snow, and my sled ran great, what more could I ask for?
