Inviting all sledders to West Yellowstone

How much should it be then!?!

Just out of curiosity, what is your life worth? I had a group of "hardcore sledders" (diesel pickup, enclosed 4 place, Klim gear & attitude) come into the shop yesterday asking about beacon/pack rentals. After giving them the low down on the equipment they said that $15/day was too much for a backpack w/beacon, probe and shovel and walked out.

We are not looking to make money with this gear, we are hoping to create awareness and possibly save a life. By the time we add up insurance and cost on the gear we will be lucky to pay for the stuff in a couple of years. So, IS $15/day too much for someone that needs to rent the gear and not be forced to purchase it for $500+???? If its too much, we'll drop the price... I just want to see guys using the right equipment while riding in the backcountry. Thanks for any comments.

Seems fair to me, What good is the beacon without the shovel? and what good is the shovel without a place to carry it? People like that will have to learn the hard way. I wouldnt change the price I cant imagine how much insurance is for those.

...they said that $15/day was too much for a backpack w/beacon, probe and shovel and walked out.

That's VERY cheap rental...but apparently those guys are way too smart for that. Too bad they'll be the ones people will be saying "what a tragedy" IF something happens to them. Say you got 40k into a truck, 8k into a sled and gear, and they're complaining about $15.00/day? That's BS. I'm just glad I don't have to ride with those guys.

More than fair.

That is unbelievably fair compared to purchase that gear for someone who is only going to use it for one or two trips per year. Keep up the great service you are providing.:D

I agree, sounds like those guys are the group to stay away from.
Hey hows the snow out there Kurt? Did nick pick up the hood ?

$15 a day is nothing. I would say that these "hardcore sledders" are a bunch of posers that don't know anything about riding because if they did they would know that $15 a day for a beacon, pack, shovel, probe is cheap. They will learn the hard way then they won't think twice about $15.

We were out yesterday around LionsHead and Sheep and we found good snow, just have to know where to look. And yes Nick picked the hood up a couple days ago. When are you coming back????????????

Were those (above) pics taken recently around west? A group of us from the Kalispell area will be in West on Wednesday 2/18 we're looking for deep snow. We've been riding early spring conditions since beginning of January. I'm curious to know what to expect for fresh snow.

Leaving for west on the 26th have had luck in the past with bring snow along with my arrivel!!!!!:D Still doing some snow dancing and hoping the sled will run this time out:eek:
Later D

$15/day sounds good to me. I didn't know anyone around West rented gear. What shop is that at? I have some friends that should rent someof that stuff. I can see not wearing the gear everyday of riding around West. I never used to. You just had to know where not to go. If we plan on going to the steep stuff I where mine. We've rode for years without gear and it was stupid. But most of the time we weren't anywhere that ever slides. The little belts are good for no avy conditions but still. One good avy in Cooke changed my whole perspective. I was lucky and nothing else. I won't even ride like that anymore. Just cause someone went there doesn't mean it won't slide when you do. Sometimes I wonder why I own a sled like I do.

Can anyone comment on the snow conditions? It doesn't look great from watching the weather. Not interested in spring riding, looking for POWDER!

Just got back from West!

Bars are now short supply on Crown and Captain Morgan.

The snow was not what we expected. Snow was marginal at best. Hardpack, with a couple in of fresh.

Lots of FWP around.

the reason he said that it was too expensive was because he was planning on buying a beacon in a package deal back home before leaving, but didnt go through so he planned on just renting. when he found out that it would cost 45 for three days he just said he would rather put that into owning one so he went and bought one right after we left the rental shop. nobody in our group said it wasnt worth the 45 dollars to have he just wanted to have his own for future use.

Thanks for the Clarification!
As you can tell, all of us agree that everyone that rides in the mountains should have avy training to avoid avy's and carry the equipment and the knowledge how to use it in the case of an accident.

Be Safe!
